    ahoy, /ck/

how do i cook beans and rice together?

both in dried form. the beans are NOT canned and the rice is NOT instant, but is polished.

the beans take about 3 hours from the first boil/soak to the end of simmering. the rice, while not instant, doesnt take nearly that long... maybe 15-20 minutes.

what im asking is... could i add the rice at around t-20, bring the whole mix back up to a quick boil and then simmer until t?

how would that turn out? or do i HAVE to use two seperate pots for this shit?

well with "rice and peas" you add the fully cooked beans into the rice and then cook the rice in coconut milk/bean water instead of water. that usually works out pretty fuckin good.

okay. so i can just finish the beans and then add the rice and cook for a little longer?

my beans wont turn to mush?

Beans are pretty good at keeping their shape and texture and not getting mushy. I usually make a big pot of pinto beans at the beginning of the week and keep them in their liquid.

If you have a rice or pressure cooker, you could cook your beans in there, then you rice and have it in significantly less time. As for cooking them together in a pot? I think it'd be okay.

    Don't buy dry beans.
You can usually find canned beans for a pretty low price, and just soak them in water for a few minutes to rinse the salt off.
Usually Goya brand because it's what all the beaners buy.

    >Don't buy dry beans.

Eh? Care to expand on that reasoning beyond "OMG IT TAKES SOOOOO LONG".

Dried beans are infinitely cheaper than canned beans, and I don't have to deal with the syrup/salt they add to the canned beans for whatever godawful reason.

The gas/electricity used in simmering something for even hours is miniscule compared to the price difference between dried and canned.
    >> Anonymous 03/21/10(Sun)13:38 No.1664569
    >>1664548

Canned beans don't even begin to compare with dry in terms of cheapness.

im not talking about godawful canned "baked" beans

im talking about just BEANS. why is CORN SYRUP in my FUCKING BEANS!?

as for salt, salt should be added to personal taste.

LOL you're the one fill of "fall".
    >> Anonymous 03/21/10(Sun)13:48 No.1664647
    >>1664548

Indeed. When pricing, you can't compare them on the shelf directly. One is saturated and in a can filled with water. Think of it like this: of the dry beans I buy, they slightly more than double in size after being soaked to saturation. That can isn't even 100% fill of beans. In the end, a can at about 75% capacity, would only need about 35% of it's capacity of dry beans. A very small handful, in other words.

So, thinking of the store I go to, you can get a 1 pound bag of dry beans for less than $1.50... Something like $1.39. Which would supply enough beans for about 10-15 cans. Or you can get can's for $0.50 or more. Doing the math, even at 10 cans/bag, that's be $5.00 or about 300% markup. The cans weigh more and take up more space so what your really paying for is the extra gas and manpower of shipping water...

exactly. and if the time really bites your ass, get a pressure cooker.

    bam, beans done in 30.

    I disagree.

    >4 lb dry black beans.

    >16 oz (1lb) canned black beans.
    >Calculates to about $1.19 per can.

That means that for every 4lb bag of dry beans, you could have gotten about 5.5 cans of beans.

    >HURR DURR CANNED HAS WATER THO

Ok, you have one point. But, if a few pennies is gonna break the bank for you, then you have no business having cable or internet.

You do realize that dried beans, when cooked, TRIPLE IN VOLUME?

Holy shit you are a dumbass.

You must have been through that american school system I hear so much about.

    >fall short (of something) - to not reach an amount or standard
    >> Anonymous 03/21/10(Sun)13:54 No.1664675
    >>1664657
    Let me expand on this.

If you cooked 4 lbs of dry beans. You would need about 12 lbs of water. The resulting bean/water mix is about what you get in a can of beans.

So that 4lb bag of dried beans actually comes to about 16 lbs of final product.

4 lb bag of dry beans = about 16 cans of canned beans

First, I live in a dorm, I cannot be arsed to use one of my few clean pots just for soaking beans.
Second, Pressure cookers, crock pots, foreman grills, etc are not allowed.
    Third, you are poor.

You can soak them in the same pot you cook them. What? Use the quick soak method and you don't need to put it in the fridge overnight.

    >Second, Pressure cookers, crock pots, foreman grills, etc are not allowed.

So, you aren't allowed to cook in your dorm? Why are we even having this conversation?

    >Third, you are poor.

Of course, but it sounds like you will be too soon if you have the attitude that paying 300% of what something is actually worth is "alright for convenience's sake".

Op here, adding the rice shortly before the beans are finished simmering does work.
