I think it has something to do with competition. Wendy's mediums have been like that for years (I worked there when I was 15, people would be surprised at how big the mediums were, now I'm 18), and BK just recently stepped up theirs.

Makes sense, I mean, soda is dirt cheap and if you know you'll get more for you money at another location, then why go somewhere else?
