Flour, Butter, refried Beans, sugar, peanuts, unsweetened plain yoghurt, coco powder, garlic,

flour + hot water = dough
dough + rolled = in pan = tortillas
tortillas + refried beans + plain yoghurt = burritos

sugar + butter + handmixer = creamed butter
peanuts + oven = roasted peanuts
roasted peanuts + flour + coco = cookie mix
creamed butter + cookie mix = peanut brownies

flour + water = scone dough
dough + oven = scones/(scone loaf of bread)
garlic + butter = garlic butter
garlic butter + scones + oven = garlic bread

    - heaps of other crap you can make

i used to live on 20 dollars of groceries for one week, but i also used to bike 200 miles a week so i might have been hungrier than you so you might be able to stretch it to a week and a half.

    cereal
    packaged salad
    granola bars
    yogurt
    bannanas
    orange juice
    ramen
    bread
    5 pounds of ground beef

and it all fit in a carry basket and my large size messenger bag

    >> Anonymous 10/13/09(Tue)21:01 No.1278062
I would buy a sack of rice at an ethnic store where it might be cheaper. And they might have a sack of dried beans there too.

If you are going to the regular grocery store, buy a big sack of cheap rice, and maybe a big pack of inexpensive ground beef.

Eat rice and ground beef every day.

One time I tried randomly asking people for money for fun. I didn't even pretend to be homeless. You can make a couple bucks in an hour wearing normal clothes just asking for money.

it was cereal, fruits, yogurt and juice for breakfast
    bike to work
    ramen for lunch
    granola snack time
    bike back home
    salad and hamburger
oh, maybe tea i the morning too sometimes but i dunno if that'd cut the 20 dollar limit...

A loaf of bread, jar of peanut butter, a jar of jelly, and a gallon of milk.

PB&Js are good for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As a plus, they provide pretty much everything you need.

In college, lived for almost four months on nothing but that. I also ate instant coffee dry, by the spoonful.

if your just feeding yourself and you have a freezer do what I do, I always have a couple cans of rotel and diced tomatoes, a jar of pasta sauce, and dry pasta, box mac and cheese, oatmeal, canned soup, the cheep, like 25-50 cent, lunch meat, peanut butter, and a loaf of bread and I also like to keep a few cheep frozen veggies around like peas and carrots and corn. You can buy 1-2 pounds of ground beef and separate it and freeze it, same with chicken breast. Not saying you have to get all of these items but you can plan out your meals and left overs and make that 20 stretch pretty far.
    >> ZOMG !Ep8pui8Vw2 10/13/09(Tue)21:40 No.1278103
You all have wonderful ideas! since pb&j keep popping up that's definitely on the list. definitely ground beef because that can be made into just about anything. and a sack of cheap veggies/fruits because hey, hamburger and pb&j for 1.5 weeks might get tiresome. I do have most of the ingredients to MAKE good food, I.E. flour, cornstarch, bag of raw cashews, but nothing to directly eat. I'm also gonna add potatoes to the mix because again, potatoes can be made into virtually anything. THANKS everyone!!!

rice and lentils, granny smith apples, bananas

if you have sams club or costco or something i suggest getting some nature valley granola bars and a box of 100 calorie mixed things

    that's good health-wise

I also suggest grabbing cheetos, nissin shrimp chow-mein, and fuck, a shit load of ramen, dude.

    that should tide you over.

Sack of potatoes garlic eggs and ground meat with whatever is left over

Brown the ground meat with garlic salt and whatever spices you wish then add maybe 3 cubed potatoes and just fry em up till the potatoes are soft.

1 fried egg on top of pile of meaty potato mixture.

Should last a week. Portion your ground beef into 7 parts. You dont really need that much meat, its just for a beefy flavor.

some great advice in this thread

key is use rice to stretch small portions of meat into a meal. also check for cheap veggies. you can get cans of beans/veggies for dirt cheap at ghetto supermarkets. also consider frozen veggies.

white rice has no nutrients whatsoever

get brown rice or die malnurished
    >> Anonymous 10/14/09(Wed)01:01 No.1278524
buy a bag of mixed frozen veggies
    eggs
    bread
    cheese
    chicken breasts
    potatoes

and ramen isn't so bad! you can add an egg or 2 and some mixed veggies to it to make it more 'nutritious' and instead of using the flavor package, you can just use your own spices... or only use like half the flavor package.
    >> Anonymous 10/14/09(Wed)01:09 No.1278535

    2. Sack of potatoes
    3. Sack of rice
    4. Gatorade powder mix (or you can just drink water everyday)
    5. Really cheap cuts of steak (look in newspaper)
    6. 2 Dozen eggs
    7. Sack of oatmeal
    8. Discounted chicken breasts( again see newspaper)
    9. Beans

I think this should cover the basics and be around $20

This will sustain you, and the shit is good.
You will need: Rice, bullion, frozen or canned beans, tomato paste, garlic and onion, fat (oil, butter, margarine)

Sweat chopped onion and 3 cloves garlic in 3 T fat. Add in two cups rice, and toast it a little.
Add four cups water and I bullion cube, 1 small can tomato paste, 1 1/2 cups beans (I like black eyed peas or red kidney).

Add some red chili flakes or cayenne. I also add habaneros.

It makes a giant pot of food, tastes great, and it cheap as hell. Goes good with cheap veg like broccoli or frozen peas.

LENTILS - cheapest, easiest protein for the poor. Costs 1.49 for a pound

    2 cloves garlic
    5 pound sack potatoes
    1 pound sale pasta ($.99)

    Butter
Some fresh herb (basil, parsley, something versatile)

    1 pound dried beans
1 pack hot dogs (or better sausage IF you have money)
    Rice

Beans and rice are a complete food together. Use the hot dogs or sausage as a fat source to flavor the beans.

Having a well put together pantry means when you get broke you'll never starve.

Take $20 and go out and buy:

    Cheese and crackers
    Chips and dip
    Soda
    Pretzels and dip
    Some sweets
    >> Anonymous 10/14/09(Wed)17:59 No.1279734
Buy whatever meat is on sale at the cheapest price per unit. This will probably mean you'll be doing some prep work yourself (as boneless/skinless cuts tend to be more expensive than whole chickens, etc.), but you'll save money, and have some bones and tendons and stuff to make stock from.

You can make your protein stretch by having your meat be a part of the main dish instead of the focus of the meal all by itself. A single pork cutlet could be one meal, or it could be 2 or 3 meals if you chop it and stir-fry it with lots of vegetables and serve it over rice or noodles.

Do NOT do this. The more prepared a food is in general the more you're going to be paying per amount of nutrients. You want raw, unproccessed stuff to get the most for your money.

I make great money, but I spend little on food because with a couple of exceptions (puff pastry, rolls, hot sauce) I don't buy prepared foods. Saves money for booze instead.

DON'T buy Ramen. While it's cheap it will never fill you up and has no nutrients. It's a big bag of starch, and starch doesn't make you feel satiated. Fiber and protein are what do.

    Best cheap proteins are legumes.

Generic breakfast cereal. It may 3-4 dollars a box, but if you're not a gluttonous fuck who can't control his portions, you should get around a dozen meals per box. Try to get one that's lower in sugar and high in fiber to maximize the healthiness.
