I've never played a dating sim before, and I'm not sure I'll need nor want one after this game. Katawa Shoujo has, most ironically (considering the background story of the protagonist), left me heart-broken.
I like all the characters so much, I'm especially sympathetic to Shizune; I listen to music continuously and compulsively, I'd feel so awful being around a person who couldn't hear, and on top of that I love that she's an all-business tsundere without any of the cartoony, unbelievable violent quirks tsunderes usually have.
I also love that the really weird girl (Rin) is also the artist, if I had a choice of the girls irl, I'd go with her.

I just remembered how one of my favorite songs is A Song For The Deaf; this game is going to rend my heart asunder.

Just to set things straight, it's not a dating sim; it's a visual novel. Dating sims have stats and lots of interactivity, while visual novels have mostly reading and have only choices as interactivity.
And to answer your second question, KS is pretty average among visual novels that can be read in English; there are definitely better ones. If you're interested, try Planetarian, Clannad, Yume Miru Kusuri, or Ever17.
