Ok, di/c/klesswonders (I don't know what the userbase here is called),
I want to watch anime with my kids (3.5 years old and [too young to understand anything apart from pretty pictures]). So far, my opinions/parameters are:
Most of Azumanga Diaoh is pretty good.
Haibane Renmei is perfect (except the last episode is (maybe) a bit intense).
From what I've seen, the first episode of Mushishi is great, the second is a bit disturbing.
My kid *loves* the Ghost Cat arc of Mononoke, but I have to censor the graphic/implied violence/murders/incest. The art/creativity in Mononoke is *awesome*, and I want the kids to see more like it.
Kokoro would be good, if it wasn't... it is... seriously, what the fuck is up with Kokoro Library?

Recommend me others, that I could also enjoy?

    English, please.
I've questioned ... /m/, and got some good responses (along with some rampant gore/hentai). I think I'd trust /a/ the least, but also I'd expect a lot more suggestions from /a/, and I'd like to capitalize on the "cute" factor in here first.

Sorry, I should say. English Subs.
Apparently children below the age of 5 can pick up accent/syllables in foreign languages easily. So while no one will understand the language, it could promote learning in the future. And reading is something I want to encourage along with a unique sense of creativity (hence why I'm more liberal with Mononoke).

    Bible Black.

No, I kid, I kid. Card Captor Sakura is a great one. The kid will probably enjoy Pokemon, or Digimon, too. Yu-gi-oh might be a bit too scary.

Any and all Studio Ghibli movies, with the exception of Grave of the Fireflies, are absolute musts.

Sorry for monitoring this thread so acutely at the moment, and thank you for your suggestion, but Pokemon/Digimon is a bit mindless. I know, kids don't understand anything more than mindless, but if I need to use a TV, then I'd prefer something with a bit more.
However, the only Studio Ghibli movie I've seen is Grave of the Fireflies, before my eldest was born (maybe when she was very young). And it would be great to show them. It's a good movie, adult themes, but I don't want to exactly bubblewrap them in a conservative forcefield and deny that death is a sad and tragic occurrence that we all must face at some point.
My Grandmother recently died (and so did the kindy hamster in an unrelated incidence), and my daughter really coped with it well, partly due the relationship we have and open expression of emotions and life.

Thank you, I've heard great things about Howl's and Spirited Away. The series you've shown me I'm sure will give me that extra 20 minutes during the day when I need to get something done, and the movies are great for a time when the girl can have a late night and fall asleep on the couch (or if there is a flu and she has to stay home).
The former will probably involve popcorn, the latter paracetamol.

School Days is a good one. It will teach the kids about High School, and the inevitable heartbreak, betrayal, jealousy, angst, peer pressure, bullying, and many other things that are inevitable in life, such as murders with kitchen knife, and nice boats as well.

But no. Miyazaki's works are all great. All of them. Makoto Shinkai's woks are amazing, however, they are very deep. I showed 5 Centimeters per Second to some of my friends from high school, and they were too mentally young and shallow to get it. And they were 18-20ish.

All of Miyazaki's movies. Period. Castle in the sky, Moving Castle, Totoro, Spirited away, so on and so on. Grave of the Fireflies may be good when they are 7-10 years of age. It will also teach them that war is hell for everyone. You mainly hear about how bad it was for our troops in the Pacific, dealing with Kamikazes and what not. You rarely see it from the perspective of the Japanese... Wooden homes, with bombers flying over dropping fire bombs. Shits fucked up.

Awesome... When I hired Grave of the Fireflies the clerk said it was an amazing movie. I asked the clerk (who is an amazing film buff with an awesome taste in movies) if there was any way to make the viewing better. I don't know what I was hoping for, but he suggested watching The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara.

Watching a documentary about war (even if it only have 15 minutes about the fire-bombing) before watching GotF, really humanised the cartoon characters. It was crushing.
I would recommend anyone else doing the same

Animes? I recommend Cardcaptor Sakura or if you want classic old school, Sailor moon.

Also, Ghibli films are good for this. Totoro is great and Baron: The cat returns might be a good one too! Also try Kiki's Delivery Service.
Not too sure if Spirited Away would be completely suit for 3 and a half year olds or else I'd recommend that too.

Bottle Fairy is adorable, I vote for this too.

If you're looking for creative, I really recommend Princess Tutu. The name is very corny but the anime it's self is wonderful. It uses music expertly and despite it's seemingly mindless, fluffy, Just-another-shoujo-title appearance at first its plot is wonderful and executed brilliantly. I can not articulate just how wonderful this anime is, especially at tugging on the heart strings and using it's music as more than just something going on in the background.
There is some very minor blood, violence, and nudity (accompanied by well placed arms, hair, and background objects like bushes), but nothing serious and I'm sure you'd screen it yourself before you decided to show it to your children anyway, so you'd know if it was something you felt to be appropriate for your little ones.

I know you have rampant suggestions of Miyazaki and ghibli films, but they've not mentioned two of my favorites.
The Cat Returns (or was it the Return of the Cat? I just refer to it as "Neko no Ongaeshi" most of the time, so apologies in advance) is another great one. It's whimsical, colorful, and plays like a fairytale in it's own right. This is another title that uses music nicely to convey things. I also like the 'moral lesson' it gives because not only does it not slam it into your face with the force of a mac truck going 80mph, but it's handled through the development of the main character without any ranting and raving by what could be considered an author-avatar.

Whispers of the Heart, related to Return of the Cat is also pretty good, though I'll admit it does fall into the "Mushy-lovey-dovey-feelings" range more than anything else I'd recommend to people. I may just like it because it had me pulling out the tissues and crying like a small child. It does have a similar way of handling a 'message' as The cat returns, through the main character's development. In this case it's through the character's growth as a writer and, assuming I remember correctly, her maturity.

On the subject of Digimon being mindless, I think the first two (and maybe the third) seasons manage to not be totally mindless as they do contain moderate character development and if you can wait the 5-10 episodes of "look, I'm a shounen anime! I contain things fighting!" it gains an interesting (though admitedly not very deep) plot.
Then again it's been a long time since I watched digimon, so, I may be remembering it wrong and seeing through the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia.

TL;DR- Princess Tutu rocks and has one of the best storytelling methods I've been witness to. The Cat Returns is great and makes me smile. Whispers of the Heart appeals to my inner cry baby as well as my love of character development. I watched digimon growing up and at least have fond memories of it, even if I've not actually watched it in several years.
(Even my TL;DR is TL;DR. Insert facepalm here.)

Puchi Puri Yuushi (eng: Petite Princess Yucie) is one anime that I wish had gotten more attention. It's not quite a magical girl anime, but follows in a similar fashion. More of a magical adventure, it follows a 17 year old girl stuck in a 10 year old form as she attempts to find a way to grow up. It's quite cute and I'd imagine it to be appropriate for children with the light moral lessons given and hijinks employed. I don't recall any graphic images, so it should be fine in that area as well.
