Here in this thread we can continue discussing anything musical without the assholery of /mu/. Don't be shy. Feel free to share what you are listening to, lyrics, anecdotes, opinions, and youtube links. If you can, please post a cute musical pic or, as an extra bonus , a pic that relates to any posted lyrics. This is /c/ after all.

If I get drunk yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who gets drunk next to you
And if I haver yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's havering to you

But I would walk 500 miles

    Nuapurista kuulu se polokan tahti
    jalakani pohjii kutkutti.
    Ievan äiti se tyttöösä vahti
    vaan kyllähän Ieva sen jutkutti,
sillä ei meitä silloin kiellot haittaa
    kun myö tanssimme laiasta laitaan.
    Salivili hipput tupput täppyt
    äppyt tipput hilijalleen.

    Ievan suu oli vehnäsellä
    ko immeiset onnee toevotti.
    Peä oli märkänä jokaisella
ja viulu se vinku ja voevotti.
    Ei tätä poikoo märkyys haittaa
    sillon ko laskoo laiasta laitaan.
    Salivili hipput.

    Ievan äiti se kammarissa
    virsiä veisata huijjuutti,
    kun tämä poika naapurissa
    ämmän tyttöä nuijjuutti.
    Eikä tätä poikoo ämmät haittaa
    sillon ko laskoo laiasta laitaan.
    Salivili.

    Siellä oli lystiä soiton jäläkeen
    sain minä kerran sytkyyttee.
Kottiin ko mäntii ni ämmä se riitelj
    ja Ieva jo alako nyyhkyytteek.
Minä sanon Ievalle mitäpä se haittaa
    laskemma vielähi laiasta laitaa.
    Salivili.

    Muorille sanon jotta tukkee suusi
    en ruppee sun terveyttäs takkoomaa.
    Terveenä peäset ku korjoot luusi
    ja määt siitä murjuus makkoomaa.
    Ei tätä poikoo hellyys haittaa
    ko akkoja huhkii laiasta laitaan.
    Salivili.
Sen minä sanon jotta purra pittää
    ei mua niin voan nielasta.
Suat männä ite vaikka lännestä ittään
    vaan minä en luovu Ievasta,
sillä ei tätä poikoo kainous haittaa
    sillon ko tanssii laiasta laitaan.

Tabs? As in the numbers that denote the frets instead of the symbols that denote the notes?
Search for the program Guitar Pro on filestube and then search songs on www.ultimate-guitar.com Whatever you do, don't join their forums. It's like the musical equivalent of Gaia, no joke.

Hey, wait a sec! I already started a new thread! Like, an hour before this one! What the fuck! This has happened before too!

Dude, no offence, but you didn't really set up the next thread very well.

    It's classic vinyl time:

There is a house in New Orleans
    They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy

"Jailbreak" - AC DC. Classic Bon Scott.

There was a friend of mine on murder
    And the judge's gavel fell
    Jury found him guilty
Gave him sixteen years in hell
He said "I ain't spending my life here
    I ain't living alone
Ain't breaking no rocks on the chain gang
I'm breakin' out and headin' home

Black Sabbath - "Warning" - Black Sabbath (1970)

You never said you love me
And I don't believe you can
'Cause I saw you in a dream
And you were with another man
You looked so cool and casual
And I tried to look the same
But now I've got to love ya
Tell me who am I to blame?
I was born without you, baby
But my feelings were a little bit too strong
Now the whole wide world is movin'
'Cause there's iron in my heart
I just can't keep from cryin'
'Cause you say we've got to part
Sorrow grips my voice as I stand here all alone
And watch you slowly take away
    A love I've never known
I was born without you, baby
But my feelings were a little bit too strong

Ok, so Dave Mustaine is no lah-dee-dah lyrics writer, but this is a pretty fun song to sing along to.

I should be calling collect from jail
For the things I commit each night in my head
Like last night in my sleep I got to snuff you
But then I woke up again, safe in my little bed
No one is safe, when I close my eyes; I come to take your life
I get to force your untimely disappearance
Each night in my dreams, when I'm fast asleep
I close my eyes and you just vanish soon as I
Lay down my head when I'm dead to the whole wide world

You light the skies, up above me
A star, so bright, you blind me, yeah
    Don’t close your eyes
Don’t fade away, don’t fade away

Yeah you and me we can ride on a star
If you stay with me girl
    We can rule the world
Yeah you and me we can light up the sky
If you stay by my side
    We can rule the world

I was never a big Dave Mustaine/Megadeth fan, but "Sweating Bullets" was still an entertaining little tune. I'd still rather listen to "Countdown to Extinction" over Metallica's "St Anger" farce.

Laugh it all off in your face

    Couldn't take all this anymore
What would you do, do, do?

    Come break me down
    Marry me, bury me
    I am finished with you

What if I wanted to fight
Beg for the rest of my life
    What would you do?

    You say you wanted more
    What are you waiting for?
    I'm not running from you

    Come break me down
    Marry me, bury me

    Finally found myself
    Fighting for a chance
I know now, this is who I really am

Countdown and Anger don't correspond with the same point in time/artistic direction for the bands, so I don't think that's a fair comparison (fair would be "Fuel" vs. "Train Of Consequences"). The Megadeth equivalent of St. Anger depends on how you look at it, but for the sake of argument, let's say it's 1999's Risk. Unfortunately, I don't own Risk, I have a greatest hits collection, but it features "Prince Of Darkness", which is a nice tune off of Risk.

Ok, point taken. I should have have compared 'Countdown to Extinction" to Metallica's "Black Album". The albums were released about a year apart, and they had similar qualities. Both albums were more mainstream, radio-friendly, commercially successful, and took different directions from the bands' previous offerings. Depending who you talk to, both albums also have the distinction of being labelled as 'sellout' albums. Personally, I didn't much care for what either band put out afterwards. Yes, bands do have to change in order to stay creative (and marketable), but Metallica disappointed me more. I guess that's why I took another shot at St Anger (I still haven't let that album go yet).

Strangely enough, I don't own 'Risk' either.

That there's a dead horse, no need to beat it. If you don't like their subsequent work, why not? "King Nothing" is a good song off Load. I say "Fuel" is right up there with the best Metallica songs. You said you were never a 'deth fan, what do you think they do wrong?

Whoa, apparently I stepped on a nerve. Dedate is good, so let's try to discuss this without it turning into a "Metallica sucks, does not" argument. I also don't want to beat the "sellout" argument either. I only mentioned it for comparison sake.

Here goes. After their "Black Album" Metallica went in a musical direction that I didn't care to follow. They experimented with more melodic lines, different rhythms, and a little more blues. "Fuel" is a great tune, but one tune does not an album make. "Reload" sounded empty.

I miss the overdubbed crunch and driving pulse of Metallica's guitars. I miss the magic Lars used to do behind his kit and I miss the wild guitar work of Kirk Hammett. He doesn't even solo on St Anger. The days of "And Justice.." are over and I have to accept it.

As for Megadeth and not being a fan, I don't think they did anything wrong. I just didn't like them as much, maybe it was Mustaine's voice.

Metallica started out teeth and nails thrash metal and over time gradually, at times suddenly, mellowed out with each subsequent album up to Reload. You didn't step on a nerve, I just think that statement's been made a billion times before, and I should have put it as you didn't have to remind me what I'm well aware of, my bad.

"Hangar 18" and "Holy Wars...The Punishment Due" were off of Rust In Piece, which came out in 1990, two years after ...And Justice For All.
I think you're referring to The System Has Failed (2004) and United Abominations (2007). The Metallica album from last year is Death Magnetic, and all three of these albums sort of subscribe to the "f'it'd ain't broke, don't fix it" theory. I don't mind any one of them, but I think the music video for "The Day That Never Dies" is the lamest excuse for pseudo-political commentary I've ever seen. To be fair, Dave Mustaine rants and raves all over that last Megadeth album and says at least a few (if not a whole bunch of) wildly contradictory statements.

Discussion time: How does /c/ feel about soundtracks whether they're from anime or Hollywood? Personally, I love the works of both John Williams and Yoko Kanno. Unfortunately, I have friends in the Classical/Jazz community that look down at soundtrack composers. Apparently they lack the 'sophistication' of 'real' composers. Any opinions?

Soundtracks have a different goal from standard classical and jazz music which are both meant to stand alone. They overlap in a number of areas, admittedly, but a soundtrack is generally expected to enhance a preexisting work (the film/show) while not drawing attention away from said work (i.e. stealing the show). This is not a steadfast rule and there are plenty of excellent exceptions. Also, many consider a good soundtrack to be something that accomplishes the previous criteria while also being able to stand on its own (again, debatable as there are many shades of gray here).

Another issue in the past 5+ years is that shows and movies are able to be pumped out faster than ever thanks to technological advances in digital processing and while this is awesome for most of the production and post-production crew, it is the BANE of soundtrack composers as many now find that they are expected to improve their efficiency in a similar manner. In other words, musical creativity is inadvertently being compromised by these trends so composers ultimately have less and less time to write soundtracks at their own pace.

Anyway, there's a lot more to the issue than just what I've typed. I think one of the main points you should take away is that soundtrack music is generally not meant to detract from the film/show which means that you're less likely to find complex pieces on the level of Bach or Beethoven being used as it would require the music to take a stronger presence to be noticed (again, plenty of exceptions). Generally, soundtracks that constantly overpower a film/show and spoon-feed emotions to viewers are looked down upon as being ham-fisted.

It's also a hellava lot easier for metric tons of crappy soundtracks to be aired or published which waters down the whole industry. Not so easy for modern-day classical music to get that far without making it past a few quality checks.

Maybe not so much with jazz as all you need are a few guys with instruments. Not to piss on jazz, just saying there's a lot of crap to sift through.

    >>a soundtrack is generally expected to enhance a preexisting work (the film/show) while not drawing attention away from said work
Well said. There is nothing worse than an 'overpowering' soundtrack or a soundtrack that just doesn't fit the 'mood' of the scenes it is supposed to enhance. I've seen many a movie where the background music has been more of an annoyance spoiling a good show. Imagine trying to watch "Lord of the Rings" with cheezy synthesizers droning in behind.

Technology can be a pain in the ass. I studied Classical composition in school and I know how impending deadlines can severely compromise the creativity in you work. Now I've used 'notation' software and MIDI interfaces to help speed up my work, but I find that I get lazy using these tools. I'm guilty of handing in a few assignment where I've just filled it with 'cut and paste' work. Ugh. I don't envy soundtrack writers.

Here's some advice, enjoy your soundtracks and ignore your friends. Don't compromise your own taste because someone else has such a pretentious view of soundtrack music.

Trust me, there is still a large amount of crap out there that tries to pass itself off as Jazz. I've seen a lot of detective/cop dramas with some really bad pseudo-Jazz playing in the background.

Now this is a little off-topic, but have you noticed that on tv there always seems to be an angst-ridden, tough-as-nails cop, doctor, lawyer. etc that unwinds at home by listening to old Jazz on vinyl.
    >> Anonymous 04/10/09(Fri)19:36 No.948502
    >>948491
Yeah, it's a bit of a cliche that dates back to earlier crime movies and TV shows and probably even film noir with the hardboiled detectives.

Also, in regard to this whole classical vs. soundtrack thing, some of the snootiness is not unwarranted as classical has a TON of heavyweights but these people are not comparing the two fields in the proper manner. It's not quite apples and oranges but the differences are significant enough that comparing the two as if they were the same thing would be a mistake.

Either way, if you enjoy listening to it, listen to it. You should always spend some time trying to appreciate the more advanced works (in other words, if you like shallow pop, try listening to more respected bands to gain a better appreciation of music) but don't let the music snobs influence you too much.

Now speaking of which, anyone have any good jazz or soundtracks to recommend? ^_^

If you're looking for some smooth Jazz I recommend The Dave Brubeck Quartet "Time Out" album. If you want some free Jazz and wild improv I recommend John Coltrane. If you want some experiments in modern Jazz, Funk and Fusion try Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew" album or Herbie Hancock ("Cantaloupe Island or "Watermelon Man" are good tunes.)

Thanks for your support! I was thinking of just buying a replacement p-bass neck from a well known guitar makers site. So I'd have the head a p-bass has , I know it's a bit lazy ; but necks are so complex and I'd need some really fancy and expensive tools to do so.

    Update #1 !
I was cleaning up the shop on Friday and found some really beutiful mahogany that'd be perfect for the guitar top. Aparently the wood was my boss' and he said I could use as much as I want for free! As of right now I'm working on the body design , I'll post it soon as I'm done. I'm also welcome to any suggestions from bass players in what they think would make a nice bass

Did anyone catch the interview with Billy Bob Thornton here in Canada? Now I'm no fan of Jian Ghomeshi (personally, I think he's a little weasel), but Billy Bob was a complete idiot. See for yourself:

On April 9, Billy Bob (and his band the Boxmasters) were booed at Massey Hall in Toronto. I never thought I'd hear of anyone getting booed there. The Boxmasters, who were an opening act for Willie Nelson and Ray Price, have since dropped off from the rest of the Canadian tour. Does anyone else think that Billy Bob should stick to acting?

Mustaine probably would have been the one to die in the bus accident, somehow, someway.
I've said in this thread they're awfully similar, but I do enjoy the differences they display. They almost sort of compare like Elder Scrolls Oblivion (Metallica's obsession with the occult) with Fallout 3 (Megadeth's obsession with nuclear war).

Not exactly sure what kind of soundtracks you're into so I'll give you a few different recommendations.
If it's 'Classical' music you want dive into John Williams. I listen to the deluxe version of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" all the time. If you want something different give Danny Elfman and 'Batman" a listen. Set aside the opening theme and you get some great 'gothic' sounding music with sharp brass and rumbling cellos and basses. Also try Fantasia (Disney 1940). Leopold Stokowski does some wonderful arranging of some great classical compositions.

If you want some "Mood" music (now don't laugh) I recommend "Buffy Radio Sunnydale [UK Version]". Yes from the "Vampire Slayer" show. Some of it can sound brooding (almost emo), but tracks like "Summerbreeze" - Emiliana Torrini, "Blue" - Angie Hart, and "That Kind Of Love" - Alison Kruss, deserve a listen.

If 'Alternative' music turns your crank give the soundtrack to "The Crow" a listen. Loved the movie and I thought the music was a great match. "Big Empty" - Stone Temple Pilots, "Burn" - The Cure, "Dead Souls" - NIN, great tracks. Look into the "Tank Girl" soundtrack as well.
