Mind you that Kemonomimi refers to all animal girls (and in rare cases animal guys), But I believe the specific term for Dog girls/people wound be Inumimi.

Furries have been "fursecuted" by the thousands because of the average 4channer's mentality. It gets just as bad as when people bash anime art because of the commercialism and stereotypes that drag along with it. Same thing goes for all subculters like emos, feminists, homosexuals, and republicans. Indeed, most furries are of the perverted kind, just like how most anime fangirls are of the yaoi kind and how fanboys are of the loli/yuri kind.

Cat/dog/whathaveyou people (i.e people with ears, tails, eyes, and even claws) are borderline. So borderline, that people'll start debates about the manner. (It still doesn't stop people from fapping.) "Furry rule is: as long as it doesn't have a muzzle/beak, and isn't covered with scales, feathers, or fur, then it's not furry."

Tl;dr: Don't confuse the two, and don't stereotype furries.

"Furry" is a completely non-academic distinction, it was a term created to refer to the appeal of animal cartoon characters, i.e. Loony Toons, Tom & Jerry, Mickey Mouse. Animals with human personalities and features. In essense it is Anthropomorphism which is giving non-human objects human traits. But to simply say Anthropomorphism is Furry is incorrect as a talking rock is technically anthropomorphism, but not furry.

Nekomimi has never been Furry and only in recent times due to newfaggotry has anyone accepted it as such. Furries can like Nekomimi but that does not make it furry. Just as Bestiality isn't furry either but may similaraly have a common grounds with it on the complete opposite end of the spectrum.

Academically, Nekomimi is Theriomorphism, attributing non-human traits to humans. Slapping ears, tails, whiskers, eyes or a nose of an animal onto a human does not make them furry. It just makes them fetishized appealing to a sense of Xenomorphism (something that's different) and the idea that certain animals possess certain character traits.

This is not hard, this is not philosophy. Furry is a generic fan-made distinction without any real consideration for academic definitions or exceptions there of. It's an imperfect classification so trying to use absolutes to define it is foolish.

If you want to post about you're creepy little fetish on 4chan's boards (even a place as nice as /c/) you should expect a few responses that do not particularly favour your predilection for "furry" things.
