I come to /c/ because it's a nice friendly board with very little "rage incidents'. I'm not overly thrilled about these 'discussion' threads though. /c/ is normally more about posting some wonderful (and unique images/threads) than yakking. I thought discussions was more /a/ material.

I'm female btw and I guess there's a little irony in wanting a less 'chatty' /c/.

Use TrueCrypt to hide your stuff inside innocuous files if you're so scared of someone finding them. The way TrueCrypt works, there's no way anyone can prove there's a volume there, as outwardly, it appears as random data, and crypto is handled on-the-fly, so no decrypted data is held in memory for long.

I keep most of my stuff on an external HDD, though, so unless I let them look at that, they won't really see a lot. On the external drive, though, there's a 335 GB folder named 'Anime', so there's not really any hiding that...

There is a better, open-source alternative media player (MPC-HC) included in a codec package designed primarily for anime watching (CCCP). It's easy to install and doesn't require a powerful computer.
There is absolutely no excuse for using VLC - it can't even show most fansubbed anime subs properly.

I wouldn't know, MPlayer probably? People rarely use linux on general-purpose entertainment/home PCs due to the fact that you need windows for most games. And linux-based HTPCs usually use LinuxMCE.

    Polite sage for off-topic.

VSFilter is called DirectVobSub nowadays. It's included in CCCP. Not available for linux. (it's a DirectShow filter.)

I dunno, there are some releases which won't display anywhere else properly for me. LIME's Ichigo Mashimaro is one, and another was the zx-series Earth Maiden Arjuna. Both needed to be played in VLC to display the subtitles, even though most everything else plays fine in BSPlayer.

There's really no excuse, other than "I don't like how it looks/works", to NOT use it. I only use BSPlayer because I'm used to its control panel, even though VLC is skinnable too and has much broader capabilities than BSPlayer (or most any other player), in addition to containing the codecs built-in and not requiring them to be installed separately.

The bottom line is, to each their own. I won't hate on anyone because they use Media Player Classic, even though I personally don't like it.

No, please stop spreading misinformation. Don't turn this thread into a shitstorm. You clearly have no understanding of what you are talkinga bout. VLC actually has weaker capabilities than other proper media players. Recently VLC has gained some long-missed features, but it's still subpar media player. Its solution of using internal filters, while useful for computer-illiterates in some cases, is a really bad idea from technical viewpoint.

I just had to check this - Ichigo Mashimaro [Xvid][LIME-Anime] release uses .ass softsubs, just like almost all anime releases.
Works with CCCP. VLC still doesn't support .ass.

I'm trying not to turn this into anything, just voicing my opinion. Under broader capabilities I meant playing to file, and stream capture, for example, which I haven't seen in any other player.
The filters don't matter to me either, I've got K-Lite Mega, and whatever doesn't play with that installed is pretty much fucked.

The BSPlayer-VLC duo works for me, and that's it. If you use MPlayer or whatever, peace on you.

MPC-HC can do everything VLC does, and more. Yes, it can also play most things without any external codecs.

The difference is, MPC-HC allows you to use external filters while VLC does not. VLC has always been and will always be behind players that can use external filters. VLC does not support advanced subtitle formatting. VLC cannot play high definition video properly. VLC cannot play 6.1/7.1 sound properly.
