Solid Sate Society and GITS2 made it clear she became a cyborg at a very young age. But it never gave any clue as to what specific aliment made her require full body cyborgization.

In second GIG the major finds an antique shop with two child cyber bodies in it. The lady who owns the
shop tells the major the history of the two, she mentions how both children were the only survivors of the crash.

Considering the Majors reaction to the story and the fact the little girl resembles a younger version of the Major, it's not that far fetched to assume that the girl was her.

Also the manga, the first two movies, and the tv series have separate stories.

the major must be about 20-30 years old. her accident happened when cyborg technology still exists so it should be around 2010-2015. SAC started in 2030.
