Typically the larger the city, the more "gay tolerant" it will be, with exception of many of the southern states of course (Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, Georgia, Louisiana...but why would you want to live there anyway?) I can only really speak for Texas, but Austin or Dallas would be your friendliest place to be gay in Texas, but it's still looked upon as taboo to be openly, in-your-face gay.

We appreciate the more subtle gays, but there are certainly gay areas in the city where you can be the biggest queen you want to be. But from what I hear, most gays hate those super queens anyway..

I'm not gay but from my understanding the more affluent the area the less likely you are to encounter anyone hating on you for being gay. If you go to the hood in San Francisco dressed up like a girl or all over a guy they'd probably not take too kindly to you. Dallas is pretty tolerant too, it isn't like the stereotypes you hear about Texas for the most part.
