Has anyone ever watched Prometheus?

Saw it a couple nights ago and I don't know what to think of it. I don't understand the theory of evolution stated in the movie where it is implied that humanity was created by a superior species of aliens and we are simply their creations

I've been hearing more and more about the theory regarding human DNA being an offset mutation compared to other distant relatives on Earth and that there had to be some kind of intervention for humans to be created.

I think this theory isn't that far fetched compared to any religion, but in contrast to the theory of evolution I think Darwin still wins
>>
What you have to bear in mind is that Prometheus is Scott's worst film since GI Jane.

Promised lots, delivered little.
>>
no, no one has ever watched it
>>
>>453917805
yeah, i can't help but agree

and the end where they squeezed in the scene with the alien just to stress that this WAS a prequel to Aliens made it kinda cheap imo
>>
It's a sci-fi form of biogenesis
Rather than biogenesis occurring from reproduction, in the movie it occurred from some sci-fi drink thing and that also happened to trigger mutations.

It's not a theory, it's not a hypothesis even, it's a movie script.
>>
I enjoyed Prometheus as a movie. I won't touch that little theory.

Darwin's explanation for the origins of man is flawed. More and more evidence is emerging that shows that there are many flaws in his theory. I won't go into detail on a troll site like this but if you do your own research revolving around the emergence of man and the dissaperence of our supposed ancestors. DNA evidence and many othe things you will see that we went through a transformation not a slow evolution. I'm not claiming that evolution doesnt exist only that our existence is not entirely evolution.

I think its totally plausible, bottom line: we are the most advanced organism on earth, and the runners up aren't exactly close to rivaling are intellect. but it beckons the question; where did the aliens come from.
it makes sense that evolution can produce intelligence of our calibre, and it MUST be the possible in some form or else life would be insects copulating endlessly.
>>
>>453917215 (OP)
It was written by Damon Lindelof, its best not to justify the writing by analyzing it, and just write off anyone who likes it as a retard who doesn't understand what good storytelling is.

Its a terrible movie.
>>
I enjoyed it. I think the people who didn't for some reason have to over analyze every movie they watch and try to find flaws.
>>
>>453918662
>I don't understand the theory of evolution stated in the movie
>stated in the movie

its based off of sumerian mythology and they're just starting to dig up potential evidence to back up some facts

before everyone gets all pissy, i'm not saying darwins theory is flawed, im just trying to wrap my head around this one more
>>
>>453919545
people get butthurt over scifi movies since everyone seems to think that scifi movies for some reason have to be related to something in our future and aren't allowed to be completely unrelated to our actual universe.
>>
It moved me a little to ask myself those "heavenly" sort of questions

but as soon as those niggers landed they all took stupid pills and that doesn't make up for it
>>
>>453919545
its not about over analyzing, its the fact that some people watch alot of movies and realize when they see a bad one, I watched half an hour of it and couldn't stand the horrible acting and terribly written storyline, but this is the case with most sci-fi, its made for kids and 30 yr. old autistic neckbeards, and they know that, thats why they make a movie with a cool concept and no substance.

Also our genetic mutation that makes us approx. 3% different from primates involve the fusion of chromosomes 1 and 3. That fusion is unnatural. In nature, mutations happen when genes get knocked off and others get put on. Chromosomes dont fuse
>>
Never take a movies theories seriously. You will never enjoy any movie if you over speculate.

And no, humans are not off spawn of aliens. If we were we would be far more intelligent (because these aliens will have already discovered how to over light speed etc.. also we wouldn't bare any resemblance to other creatures on this planet.
>>

that's Alien from the movie "Aliens". The first of its kind. That scene was meant to imply that humans and the Xenomorphs (Alien) are directly related.

Someone once asked Robert Altman if Popeye was a movie for kids. He replied - It's a movie for anyone with five bucks.

we share the vast majority of our genome with bonobos and chimpanzees, and well over 80% of it with the great apes in general.

differences like this arent exactly unheard of across the web of life. humans are only special due to intelligence, but they are finding more and more that we are not nearly so special in this regard as we have formerly believed.
>>

yeah, i'de say thats pretty accurate

he looked at the robot and saw what humanity had become, a lazy, greedy species that won't even take the time to learn a language but go the extra mile to create a robot to learn it for them

the guy was also pissed off when he was asked how to become immortal by the robot, because not even the creators of humanity had that
>>
>>453921865

Holly fuck this bugged me. The story says they were on their way to destroy all the humans on earth, but something went wrong so they put themselves into those capsules. They'd been there thousands of years... yet when big blue fucker wakes up he instantly goes into MUST DESTROY PLANET EARTH mode.

I mean what the fuck. If I'd just woken up after THOUSANDS of years of sleep, my first thought would be "woah I wonder what's changed" and "Damn I need a strong cup of tea".

I really liked the movie. The only part that annoyed me was how religious the most scientific people were and how quickly they gave up based on their fleeting theory not turning out exactly as they wanted.

I think the DNA thing was pretty simple, they populated Earth with their own species. Perhaps it was a fail safe. Perhaps they were just guinea pigs.
>>453925465
Shit went wrong. Their own bioweapon turned on them. He went into cryostasis.

>>
>>453917215 (OP)
the scenario is pretty dumb and full of holes (why would the planet locatin appears in fucking cave paintings?) but the movie remains enjoyable for some reason.
If you don't think too much about the plot, IMO it's one of the best alien spinoffs, I think there was a lot of potential with the space jockey race and all this potential remains, and all the usual alien tropes were reworked in an intersting fashion, so yes still a good movie IMO but terrible scenario.
also I love the blonde actress' style, forgot her name

See that the huge problem with the movie. They are making it episodic with tons of questions like a TV show, but the thing is we can't tune in next week and get those answers. All in all we wasted 2 hours of our lives and learned nothing, in fact we just got more questions.

If you want to make a episodic set of movies you need to make them more self contained, a la the first Star Wars (original trilogy) or the first Matrix.
>>
>>453927697
the movie?

Did you not see the beginning where the Alien drank the black liquid in the tube and fell in the water? his decomposed DNA triggered a biological reaction which EVENTUALLY created humanity

Its also shown that one of them had to sacrifice themselves inorder for humanity to flourish, therefore they're the creators and we, the creations

>>

Agree.

I really, really wanted to like it and even bought the DVD in the hope a second viewing might help.

It should have been at least 30 mins longer and built some suspense in that structure rather than a quick in and out with lots of half-answered questions and allusions to philosophical references hidden away like little easter eggs for nonces to fawn over on forums.

It was a shit film and remains a shit film after spending time researching Greek mythology.

Lindelof is a dick.
>>

>>
>>453927127
>>453926718

Before prometheus, it was essentially agreed (although not directly talked about in the films) that the xenomorphs (aliens) were a biomechanical (synthetic + organic) weapon, created by the big blue fuckers to "clean up" planets.

Prometheus vaguely sticks to this, except instead of the xenomorphs being used directly as the clean up weapon, the black liquid was the weapon which the xenomorph eventually came from after it had made its way through the DNA of two humans, big tenticle monster and big blue fucker.
>>
>>453928287
So wanting a coherent story is "autistic"?
>>
Personally I hated the film for these reasons.

The majority of the team were scientists correct? and if I remember correctly the mission cost billions of dollars. So these scientists maybe wasn't the number 1 in their field of expertise but they'd definitely be in the top 10. Enter the biologist.

When him and the Scottish Geologist are left in the cave system and they come across them leaking jars with that snake/eel creature and it took an aggressive stance. You know it did, I know it did, everyone watching it did EXCEPT...the (quite famous in his own field) biologist. He kept trying to get closer, and closer and then it attacked. Was anyone surprised? Which led to the death of one of only two characters in the film I liked (the geologist)

When they see those holograms running from something (you can tell they were running from something as they kept looking behind them) it wasn't until much later, back on the ship someone raised the question "What were they running from?" Considering no other remains had been found up to that point I'd of been worried whatever they were running from might still be around, or it's offspring but no, this entire team of scientists never thought to ask until later.

The woman, God I hated her, granted she had to be the opposite to Ripley in the Alien films I get that but when they find out the Aliens (forget there name) wanted to kill humanity and when they wake that one up it proceeds to kill the humans almost right away her big plan for the end? Visit their home planet...really. they obviously want you dead and you want to visit them?

I have to ask does any character have any thought process above a 7 year old?

This YouTube comment is fairly interesting:

The Engineers made us. We (actually Weyland) created A.I. (David). Weyland thinks he belongs with the Gods (Engineers) thus deserving eternal life. The Engineer quickly evaluates Weylands creation and decides Weyland is not worthy. It's not really about greed, it's more about becoming the creators image, namely a creator. This scene then would suggest that being a creator isn't good enough. Maybe it's because the creation has no real "free will", since he's programmed and doing Weylands bidding.
>>
>>453928737
That's a little gay. I've always thought that the aliens are much more scary the less we know about them.

Finding out they're more or less tools made to hoover up planets makes them a lot less sinister, I think.

How do you expect people to justify a flawed theory in the first place? This is the main mistake of this thread.

I really doubt we were "Created" by an alien species. There's pretty much no reason to believe this.

Why would the trillionaire not commission a pod for the captain who he said was like and or was his daughter.

For me, the fact that the aliens were a biomechanical creation (never wondered why looked like they were made of metal in areas?) was the most intriguing factor about them.

I meant the Greek titan Prometheus.

You see a mural of him with the eagle in the room with the giant head.

Regardless, you shouldn't have to have any sort of understanding of classics in order to understand little slight allusions in a film that are inconsequential to the whole. It's more a case of referencing things in an oblique fashion in the hope that it will generate discussion.

Debating whether Deckard was a replicant happened because it was a good film and ultimately had the potential to alter the way you see a film. It also requires no prior knowledge of any sort of rum historical shit that is comparatively obscure.

All that aside, I want to take Noomi for a picnic.

I don't want to be a prick, but when you're claiming a theory as far fetched as this one, the evidence is going to need to be pretty damn solid.

In that case, why was the geography so fucked up? This isn't a nitpick, precambrian earth was utterly inhospitable, and was more like Venus instead of what we got.

If it wasn't earth, WHAT THE FUCK WAS THE POINT?

This is high school level shit.

Oh hai guys

ok, the first scene is meant to show you the method that engineers use to create life from themselves

they drink the dark liquid, their DNA decomposes and it triggers a biological reaction that creates life, so everything is their creation, because they themselves created the dark liquid

they don't tell you if its earth or not because they want to show you the process of creating life and the sacrifice they make
>>
>>453924280
you mean " conscious", retard? Conscience is jiminy cricket
>>
>>453933884
another huge fuck-up in continuity
xenomorphs take on some of the characteristics of the beings they gestate from except dogs for no logical reason
>alien3
>>
>>453933654
also another reason they don't tell you if its earth or not is because they want you to contemplate the idea that they engineers go around the universe looking for potentially hospitable planets and create life
>>
>>453934782
In the directors cut of Alien 3 it came from some Cow/Bull/Yak thing.

You never see the dog.
>>
>>453934782
it *did* take on a bit of characteristics from the dog in alien3 with how it moved - most of the time spent on all fours.
>>
>>453935341

Yeah, and it could run much quicker. Was also brown rather than black.
>>
>>453935183

I hope the sequal explains why they do it.

Im guessing:-

a) - because "they can". playing god is fun.

b) - maybe for potential future food sources? if their civilisations is huge maybe this is what they need to do. Earth was essentially a giant farm - humans were an accident so they going to whipe us out before becoming a threat.
>>
interesting theory of evolution. It's a damn shame we can't have a black pilot just pop in out of nowhere and explain the whole thing of how we got here.
>>
>>453919367
Thanks, this needed to be said.
>>
>>453936337
yeah exactly!

imo, its definitely option A
you can see that in the movie where the robot is talking to the doctor, and says
"why did you create me?"
and the human replies "because we could"

i think the humans and engineers are a lot alike, DNA wise, obviously but also characteristics

>also I love the blonde actress' style, forgot her name
Charlize Theron
>the scenario is pretty dumb and full of holes (why would the planet locatin appears in fucking cave paintings?)
That's the only plot hole you can think of? The entire movie is fucking plot hole. Nothing happens for any reason whatsoever.
>the movie remains enjoyable for some reason.
A talented director, a good budget, actors trying their best to act impossible and incoherent characters. Basically, everybody did their job except for the scenarist.

That still doesn't save the movie. It's one of the best alien spinoffs alright. Have you seen the competition? Alien vs. predator 1 and 2?

dude, I watch films for the flashing lights and inconceivably large clips, where the bad guys can't shoot for shit, it's hilarious.

you want a story find a book.
>>
>>453936337
>I hope the sequal explains why they do it.
Your guess is as good as anybody else's. The scenarist has no idea where he's going. It's the guy from Lost.
>>
This Movie blew OPs balls.
>bio weapons alien outpost
>they created humans
>they changed their minds and wanted to destroy humans.
>whoops bio-lab accident they all die.
>we go there
>we take off our helmets because, why not, its not like were scientists or anything. Its not like we have no basic immunity to even the most basic biological thing on this world.
>we all die.
>Alien is the result of mutated tentacle sex between horror slug and human.
>I complained to my flight attendant that the movie sucked.
>>
>>453938712
Different strokes for different folks my friend.

This is why you have games like Mass Effect and Call of Duty

Prometheus and Se7en.

You want flashing lights then fine, doesn't mean others don't like a good story.
>>
>>453939161

I watched the first series of Lost, assumed it was never going to end and then quit. So glad I did.
>>
>>453939441
>also, an asteroid a few miles wide wiped out the dinosaurs...
>the aliens races have ships that are ten times a big, and go ten times as fast.
>Yeah no, lets build a super bug to destroy all of mankind.
>I can't even.
>>
>>453939462
After posting I realised Halo would've made a better analogy.
>>
>>453939918

I'm assuming it was just mankind they wanted to destroy - not all living things on earth.
>>
>>453940763
I guess... that bug they invented seemed to kill everything though
>>
>>453940903

Didn't kill Jones.
>>
>>453941274
oh whatever, I hate this fucking movie and you to. I'm going home
>>
>>453941274
The cat right?
>>
>>453941452

Jones was in the Alien film, not Prometheus.

>>453941513

Yeah, the cat.
>>
>>453941739
The cat was class. Even had a face shot when it was killing that mechanic.
>>
Enjoy the movie you fucking Autists. That is, instead of masturbating in your mothers dusty basement over Sigourney Weaver's man-jaw and TRYING to find every single plot hole you can, enjoy the movie for what it is.

I forgot about the kitty :3

It hissed that alien good :3
>>
There is so much stupid in the movie:

>fossilized head reanimates with electrical current
>why would they reanimate it?
>taking off the helmets
>cave 3D-mapping guy can't find way out of said cave
>Make expensive mission, choose all the wrong people that can't work together
>have a medical pod just for one sex, when the only difference between male and female is the reproductive system
>running with a stapled-shut stomach
>suicide mission with three people when one would do
>why even hide Weyland on the ship?
>Engineers' DNA matches 100% human DNA, yet they're not human
>Why did the robot infect the guy?
>etc, etc.
