A big part of the problem is that many of the cancerous threads aren't actually breaking any rules. A sad side-effect of /b/'s lawlessness. Maybe if the mods were given more leeway to eliminate threads that are not just rule violators, but just plain annoying and cancerous, that would help. I think some mods are afraid to act on those because they don't actually break any rules. Mind you, I don't know myself what rules govern mods.

I've been having this thought since the start of the attempts to "clean up" /b/ - seriously.

There is a kind of internal split here that on one hand everything should just free wheel, but if it doesn't free wheel in the direction the mods (moot?) would like it is seen as a problem to be fixed.

You can't be a little bit pregnant and either /b/ has to be allowed, and trusted, to self-regulate (or not) and evolve in its own way, or yeah, here comes another farcebook.

Let every user have the ability to apply a 1/1000th of a ban or some of arbitrary figure. If enough users flag something the person automatically gets banned like a citizens arrest kind of thing. Let the board regulate itself.
