moot,
4chan has had a profound impact on both the culture and politics of the
Internet. Various comments you've made over the years (no ads, no
donations, no watermarks, no rules for the most part) as well as the
deliberately anonymous and stateess design of the site, suggest that
you're concerned with freedom of speech and freedom of communication.
4chan
has, to varying extents, created anonymous, wikileaks, "hacktivism" in
general. It's had a heavy influence on the tor and bitcoin projects, and
/b/ in particular represents freedom in the minds of a lot of people.
On
the other hand, there's a social aspect. We (you) have created most of
the memes floating around the Internet, we're a vast community, everyone
posting anonymously -- but weirdly, and intensely, connected. Almost
everything posted here is retarded, but it's clear that many of the
people behind it all are very smart people, enjoying the culture and
playing their parts. Nothing like this has existed in the history of the
world, and it's very exciting to be part of it. I imagine it's much
more exciting to have created it, but perhaps not.
On yet the third hand, we're all here for the lulz.
I've
summarized three perspectives on /b/.. the first (freedom) is what drew
me here. I was a torfag and cryptography nerd (with a mathematics
degree -- I'm legit) long before I was a /b/tard. But the more time I
spend here, the more I'm drifting toward the second and third attitude.
What do you think (if anything) about all this? |
