Dude, I'm stationed at Pope AFB, an in-route HEAVIES squadron. I can count at least 15 guys here on one shift alone with a fighter crew chief shredout that ended up working heavies due to Air Force demand. Hell, I'm a BOMBER avionics guy working on C-17's, go figure.....

Well, you don't "operate" them. You maintain them. You look for cracks, worn out parts, bald tires, fucked up seals, various shit like that. You spend the majority of your time documenting maintenance on paper, making sure the digital copies match the paper copies, and trying to fuck off as much as possible while making everything look on the up and up. It's really not an exciting career field. You WILL work more than everyone else on the base. You WILL be treated like a criminal by quality assurance. You WILL be under appreciated. Retention rates for maintainers are quite low, and there is a reason.

But hey, you'll get your name on an aircraft some day. You'll get the pride of maintaining a war fighting machine for your country. It's not all bad, but it's probably not worth it.

Go some other type of maintainer. The crew chiefs are responsible for documentation. If the specs fuck up forms, you get shit. If the weapons guy spills coffee on the binder, you fix it. You get the shittiest jobs and have to make sure every other shop is on the up and up.

Be absolutely amazing in high school. Have your dad be someone with connections. Get accepted to the USAFA. Graduate as high in your class as possible. Have no serious (in the USAF's eyes) physical problems. Have good eye sight (70/20 uncorrected is the absolute limit, probably won't get fighter).

If your dad is a nobody or you weren't amazing, then go to college. Enroll in the AFROTC program and suck as much cock as you can. Volunteer for as much community service as you can get. Try out for any sports team you can get on. Run for SGA. Join a frat, become a leader in it. Graduate as high as you can in your class.

"Operating" an aircraft is something that VERY few people will ever get to do in the military, in comparison to the number of people who want to. There are 1000s of people sitting around with the same asperations as you, and 50-100 of them may be pilots next year. Of them, probably 20 will become fighter pilots. You have to be better than them if you want to get their spot.

Note: replace AF with N in the above acronyms if you want to be a Naval Aviator. It's the same shit with a different boss.
