I was watching the live coverage around 10 or so hours ago I think, before work. They're having a recess now and will start again 10am (I'm an Auscandy-ass, I don't know what time it is now for them). The bill was passed in the house (Is that what it's called? Again, Auscandy-ass) and then went to amendments. Most amendments were attempts to prevent the bill being abused by corporations and limiting their power to bully smaller entities. They were all shot down mercilessly of course. Then they went to recess, and will start again with more amendments.

Just because it passed at this stage doesnt mean it can't be stopped. It has to pass the house and senate, and from there the president can veto it if he wishes. He probably wont and it will probably pass.. it's just a bit of optimism on my part.

I didn't say it can't be stopped. I'm well aware it can be. If Obama vetoes they'll need no less than 2/3 of the vote to get it through once and for all, and while I didn't see them vote on the bill, the amendments aimed at restricting corporation power were voted down by EXACTLY 2/3 of the vote (22 - 11). This makes it seem like roughly 2/3 of the congressmen are pro-SOPA, and a single congressman changing his mind could destroy it the second time around.

what was voted on was amendments to the bill
The amendments were voted down
now the committee has to vote to send the bill AS/IS to the full house
If the committee votes to send it to the full house then the full house has to vote on it
If they change one thing in the bill the process starts all over again
If it passes in the house it then goes to the senate
and the whole fucking thing starts over again
then if it passes the senate it goes to the POTUS
the POTUS can then sign it , it becomes law
veto where it goes back to congress that needs a 2/3 vote to over turn the veto
or he can sit on it for 10 day ( pocket veto)
even if it is signed into law it will be dragged into court because it flagrantly violates the 1st,4th and 5th amendments
the reason the vote to leave the bill as/is some postulate is because it is so shitty it will never make it past the SCOTUS
