Without diving in complex arguments about economics, can anyone explain me why the richest countries of the world are suffering from a spiraling crisis? There isn't anyone richer in the world to take resources from them or exploit them. The only thing they have to do is to hold on to their resources and wealth. The OWS movement creates a false dichotomy. It's not the "evil 1%" against everyone else. To think of things in such black and white terms is childish. People seem to be personifying big corporations as fat old rich men. Corporations are not people.

Just because someone makes significantly more than another person does not obligate them to share anything. It would be great if they did, but they in no way have to.

Additionally, these protesters are spending great amounts of time out in the streets because they have no job. Being that they have no job, they are not withholding anything that the other "side" wants. Basically, the movement has no leverage.

The hardcore supporters of OWS bear a striking similarity to many of the people that believe in Illuminati/Freemasons, etc. What I'm saying is that to me it seems that they are realizing that they are not where they want to be in life, so they rationalize it as the result of some ultra-powerful unseen force working directly against them.

I'm aware this does not hold true for all of the supporters. I just highly doubt that the movement will actually accomplish anything.

Early 1990's: Housing market is picking up, but banks refuse to loan money to the poor because of the high risk. Regardless of what people think, a bank would much rather have a paying customer then to have to seize someones assets on a default and deal with that mess.

Community organizations, such as ACORN, begin to protest the lack of loans to the poor-specifically to the poor minorities. Claims of racism are shouted, banks are targeted for protest....the whole 9 yards.

Clinton decides something needs to be done and retools the Community Reinvestment Act. This, along with other measures, forces banks to give out a certain number of "sub-prime" mortgages to the poor-- regardless of their assets or income. From that point onward, sub-prime mortgages as a percentage of all housing loans skyrockets.

The banks decide they need to cover their ass, as handing out risky loan after risky loan isn't such a hot idea. They essentially create an artificial market called the credit default swap. In a sense, they are buying insurance on those risky sub-prime mortgages from other investment banks. That way, if the loan holders default, the banks at least get something.

Things begin to spiral out of control. Sub-prime mortgages, at the behest of the government- specifically the Democrats-- continue to be pushed as part of this illusion that owning a house is something every American deserves.

Enter Bush: He initially continues this push...but around 2003 realizes that things are getting out of control. The credit default swap market is becoming MASSIVE, and a downturn in the housing market would be catastrophic, for reasons I will outline in a minute. He tries, along with congressional Republicans to get new regulatory laws passed for the housing GSE's Freddie and Fannie...he even proposes the creation of a new regulatory body. In 5 years there are 4 attempts by Republicans to bring regulation to the sub-prime market and credit default swap market. At each and every turn Democrats block it with threats of filibuster, afraid that tightening lending standards will reduce the number of low-income loans going to minorities. Dodd and Frank are KEY in this effort.

Fast forward to 2008. The housing market collapses. Too much supply, not enough demand. The rates on those sub-prime mortgages get adjusted to reflect this. People start defaulting like crazy. All of a sudden, all of those insurance policies on the credit default swap market become due at once, and the investment banks, like AIG, don't have the money to pay them. The system collapses and infects every other sector of the economy. Shitstorm ensues.
