The basic premise is that the government and the top 1% of the US have fucked the country up so badly that the rest cannot do anything but live as a slave caste. The erosion of the middle class has left such a huge gulf between the rich and poor that it's almost like two different societies.

That's what they're supposed to be fighting but the media and idiots (on both sides) tend to muddle the message. It's the precursor to revolution, one that America needs desperately.

If things go well for everyone the revolution will be pretty easy and work itself out in the next couple of years before the next big problem Elderly versus Young comes along. We'll gain universal health care, cut the military and close a ton of bases, make politician's financing more transparent, and improve public education.

If things don't go well we'll have a violent revolution in 20 years and most of the nation's wealthy will be killed in similar fashion to the French Revolution. If the US stays in one piece after that it'll take decades before it grow back into a first world nation.

    Either way, things will change.

Older anarchocandy-ass from the Seattle WTO riot days, really inspired by the Occupy mvmnt, though I'm looking forward to some crowds saying fuck it to nonviolence as an ideology & shitty representation by leaders & non-profits.
If I may make a humble suggestion to bookmark & read later, for inspiring ideas around anonymity as a strategy, nihilism,& insurrection in modern society check out the pamphlet The Coming Insurrection. You may agree with it or you may not, but it's a fascinating & influential piece that might be of use to legioncandy-asss. Also a bit on how NOT to do it, as the alleged authors were raided & charged with terrorism in connection with the pamphlet.
"Flee visibility. Turn anonymity into an offensive position. In a demonstration, a union member tears the mask off of an anonymous person who has just broken a window. “Take responsibility for what you’re doing instead of hiding yourself.” To be visible is to be exposed, that is to say above all, vulnerable..Not making ourselves visible, but instead turning the anonymity to which we’ve been relegated to our advantage, and through conspiracy, nocturnal or faceless actions, creating an invulnerable position of attack..No leader, no demands, no organization, but words, gestures, complicities."

I work a full time job and literally cannot afford health insurance. I've got school payments, car payments (and insurance), rent, a phone, and internet to pay for. I also have a powerful need to eat once or twice a day. So how does my job manage to make any headway if I'm literally one cut string from being dead?

If I get in a car accident my car would be gone and I'd still owe money on it. I could be seriously injured and have no means to pay for it. I wouldn't be able to work to make payments on my apartment and would lose everything.

The occupy movement is built on the fact that millions of Americans are one small step from being homeless or dead and the politicians and wealthy think they're the ones in the right.

To anons sick of nonviolent ideology & it's accompanying bullshit, I can't strongly enough suggest to check out the book below, and to pass it on. It's really accessible and makes a great case for dumping pacifism as a puritan strategy.
Back in the globalization protests this was a whole drama shitstorm, there's lots of other places to find arguments about it, might be useful to sidestep some of the dumb drama we went through.

Your image is inaccurate. The 300 Spartans were backed up by a fleet of Athenians keeping the majority of the force occupied and they were a force of 7,000. It was a great example of terrain and superior arms beating numbers, not a righteous force or many versus few.

The Spartans had bronze armor and shields whereas the Persians who had to travel a great distance were in leather. It's an example of better trained, better armored people with superior positioning standing up to a larger but much more poorly equipped/trained forces.

So... basically the 99% would be the Persians crashing against the Spartans, who would be backed up by many others.

(related to picture) I don't quite get that attitude

it's not like the conspirators/opressors invented work, money, capitalism or consumption

and at least for work and consumption, they are things which are always there - we produce, and we consume; we like to consume stuff and it's what we live for, it's always like that; everytime you get something you want and you subsequently feel good, it's consumption (in extermely wide sense - in smaller sense it's always if it's just something you look at/eat/use for pleasure, but that does neither mean that their is anything bad about it)

    the problem is not consumption/'consumerism'
the problem is that people are restricted into the system

of-course they lack resistance because they are distracted with consumption, and scared to lose consumption-goods if the system breaks, but that's not inherent to consumption

Anarchists do not presume to prescribe a New World Order, we just invite people to reassign their trust and loyalty from symbolic ideals and authority figures, to themselves and their neighbors. The rest happens more of less by itself. The only global solution is to recognize the absurd folly of global solutions.

there is no reson to buy a 500 dollar pair of jeans when a 20 dollar pair is thte exact same material with maybe a different pattern of stitching to show the brands

    and thus we deny it

to say that consuming infinitely is how someone would be WITHOUT the programming of this consumption culture is nonsense

I can understand where you're coming from, though I think it can get a bit complicated. Some of the most asshole bosses I've had were small biz places. Also, back in the day measures were taken to avoid this - at the front of a Black Bloc someone would hold a paint roller and mark which buildings were corporate. Was pretty nifty.
I think my problem with nonviolence is also more that it's enforced on the rest of us, and that the self-appointed leaders of non-violent stuff will often call the cops, even ironically attack anyone fucking shit up. You might find the Nonviolence PDF interesting, I predict more controversy around this in the future.

Also a good movie, then I'll stop overloading the thread with stuff to bookmark, called "Breaking the Spell" about the WTO riots specifically by anarchists, talking about why people smashed windows.

Are you aware that not everyone has the desire to control everything, and most of us are, in fact, happy to have jobs, be able to work and provide for ourselves, and aren't so full of ourselves that it's a detriment to everyone else?

control countries? oh no, I just did well in school to survive and get somewhere in life. Not to get into debt after getting a useless shitty degree and complain about the choices I made.

buying prestige/premium stuff: it's not nonsensical, it has an abstract value which is given through mostly the fact that it is an expensive product

doing so does not mean supporting opression - you're of course what you could to alleviate it then, since you could give the money to ppl who need it more instead, but the money isn't gone because you give someone, and you're not taking anyone's freedom away by making a transaction

consuming 'infinitely': well as long as someone lives he consumes.. what i agree upon is that there clearly is commonly a far too high priority on consumption (stuff) in relation to resistance, alleviating opression, dire problems of non-availability etc.., and that is somehow inherent to the system which is most beneift to the rich

Nonviolent strategic conflict is the use of force to rip out the foundations of illegitimate power, without presenting hard targets to the enemy or allowing him to successfully cast you as a "dangerous terrorist". Pacifism does not mean that you can not use deadly force in legitimate self defense - only that you can not use deadly force to achieve political ends, or for purposes of revenge or intimidation.

I generally agree but the problem is there's academics, non-profit bureaucrats, and other self-appointed leaders who have called the shots (and the cops for that matter) on movements since the 80s. If things are gonna get beyond the pitfalls older movements that older crusty dudes like myself have been in, we gotta reject these folks as the ideological dinosaurs they are.
I would really suggest to check out the How Nonviolence Protects the State PDF here
