    2 pieces = 1 cut
    2 pieces = 10 min
    therefore
    1 cut = 10 min

    3 pieces = 2 cuts
    10 min (1 cut) * 2 (2 cuts) = 20

    It depends OP

    If you're cutting a board in to 3 pieces, that requires two cuts, therefor 20 min, and you was right

    If you're cutting 3 pieces OFF A BOARD, then it's assumed the first two was also cut off, using two cuts, so three would take three cuts therefor 15 mins

    However the question says cut it into, so lrn2read (for your teacher)

    It makes sense if you assume a bunch of shit.

    1. the board is square.
    2. the first cut is down the center and you are left with two symmetrical halves.
    3. the second cut is at 90* to the first.

    This way the second cut will be half the length there for half the time making it 15 minutes.

    First off, if it takes you 10 minutes to cut a board into 2 pieces you need to get a circular saw, or go to Lowes or HomeDepot to have it cut for you. Alternatively you should look at having the pre-cut and pre-drilled (if applicable) lumber shipped to you along with the necessary nuts and bolts and other hardware required for your project. Beware of 84 Lumber Co. They will ship you some sorry ass wood. My grandpa gets better wood than them.

    Why is it even how long it takes to cut the board? Her boss should fire her ass for milking that shit out so long, jesus.
    It should instead be along the lines of how many boards can be cut in ten minutes? Productivity > Slow motherfucker
    >> Anonymous 09/30/11(Fri)18:42:36 No.356064452
    It took her 10 minutes to cut the board into 2 pieces, assuming that's one straight cut, that means to get 3 pieces of another board, you would have to start over.

    Assuming she cuts the board down the center, then 10 minutes would yield two halves, the next cut, down one half takes half as long (half the width) and would therefore take 5 minutes.

    10+5 = 15

    However who cuts half a board in half? We all know anyone with even half a half a brain would cut it straight through twice, taking 20 minutes, yielding 4 pieces, so you don't have to do the fucking experiment again.

    lol yeah the student is right. This is why mathematicians always fail hard at real shit. to saw through something of the same thickness, should take the same time to saw through the piece to get another piece. Thats irl. you would have two pieces from one cut

    Mathematically it would be 10=2x, x=10/5 so for each piece-5 minutes(x=5). multiply x by new amount.so for 3 pieces 3x= 3*5=15
    5*3

    I'm very antisocial. I'm so bad at making new friends and talking to girls. Every time It comes time to talk to someone I can never think of anything to say to them because I just get clueless. I haven't always been like this, I used to be very good at making new friends back in junior high, but since I've gotten into high school the past couple of years, it's just all went down hill.

    Low self esteem fucked me up. Whenever I was in junior high, I'd hang out with these scene kids and they got me to be like them, listening to metal and doing emo-people things and what not. It all took control of my life and now I have to wear scene people clothes.... I can't wear Nikes or other athletic shoes. I'm 15 and weigh 95 pounds. That sounds crazy, but it's true. That and bad people skills is what makes me so antisocial, no one wants to talk to me. I'm just boring to be around. And I'm on the computer for about 15 hours a day on weekends and 7 hours a day on school nights.

    I need someones advice; how can I talk to people to keep them and me entertained? What're some good examples to say to a girl whenever there's not one thing to talk about? Please? I need help. I'm having trouble and I need help.

    This question has too many variables. It takes marie 10 minutes to saw a board into 2 pieces. Of course it does, marie is a weak female. It takes matt 30 seconds. If marie then has to cut a board into 3 pieces it would take 20 minutes, provided she didnt get tired, in which case it would take longer. So the correct answer is 1 minute, because marie would decide that it would be easier to have matt make the cuts for her in exchange for sucking his dick.

    The second method makes three cuts; cutting three pieces off of a board. However, the math problem in the OP describes cutting a board into three pieces. Therefore, only two cuts are required. Since each cut takes 10 minutes to complete, the answer is 20 minutes.

    I don't know if you learned this on your school, but here we do a thing called rule of three:

    10 minutes -------------- 2 pieces
    x minutes -------------- 3 pieces

    basically you have to correlate one variable to the other and cross multiply the values and end up with a simple equation:

    (10 minutes) times (3 pieces) = (x minutes) times (2 pieces)

    or

    (10)(3) = 2x

    30 = 2x

    30/2 = x

    x = 15 minutes

    We learn this in my country by 4th grade or so
    btw OP, what grade are you?

    This isn't a strictly algabreic question, it applies to real life.

    If you have one block of wood, take 10 minutes to cut it in half (creating 2 pieces).

    That means you'll make one cut in 10 minutes.

    In order to cut a board into 3rds, you need 2 cuts.

    So 2x10 = 20.

    It can be applied to almost any simple correlation of variables if done properly. I remember a test many years ago where we had to correlate how fast could a wall be built by what amount of workers and material. It's a matter of adjusting which variables will increase and which will decrease. Anyway, as I shown there, it fits perfectly to the probem...

    if we'd be assuming things, then i assume mary gets tired and asks the poolboy Héctor to do her work but instead she fucks him and it takes them about another hour in which her husband arrives and kills them both with the saw leaving it dull so it'd take longer to cut a wooden board

    >> Anonymous 09/30/11(Fri)19:37:28 No.356071229
    There are two ways of going about it.

    1)

    2x=10
    x=5
    3x=15

    Or look at it as a real life problem, in which case it would be 20 minutes because you only need 2 cuts to make 3 pieces, meaning 2x10.

    However it does depend on the level of maths you're studying.

    Obviously OP is 11 years old, as either way this is the most retardedly easy question going.

    If this was on an algebra test and he put 20 minutes then indeed, OP is a candy-ass.

    Ask yourself this: Suppose OP gave both of the answers that are represented on this thread.

    15 and/or 20.
    15 = 10 = 2. 15 = 3. 20 = 4. etc.
    Or
    20 = 1 board, 2 cuts = 20 mins = 3 pieces

    These are two legit answers.

    ok, so some people say there are two correct answers because if you cut one of the second piece the shorter way, then its half the time. the issue with you idiots who say 15 can be correct is the fact that the image shows marie cutting a 2x4-ish looking board, it is not a flat square piece so stop coming up with stupid jpgs that claim it is. judging by the lack of information, and the image shown, we should assume each cut is an EQUAL cut, and that the 2nd cut is not half as long as the first cut.

    so since you smart asses show how 15 is correct also, and there are two answers, well i think there are infinite ways and she can still be cutting "just as fast", let me show you with a jpg.

    I went to school. I know math. The answer is whatever you want it to be if you just know how to work the variables.
    That's how to solve the problem. You set up the peramiters yourself and go with the flow. Don't let that teacher tell you who you are, child. You're young and have your whole life ahead of you. Be yourself. Stay true to who you are as a person.

    That's my answer.

    maths are not a one way system.
    maths are divided in 2 systems, logic and rational. computers cannot process rational equations. humans are not designed to process rationnal things unless trained. The logic answer is 15m, the rational answer (the good one) is 20m

    hey guys
    Ive never told anyone this before, but on my 21st brithday I made a wish i would wake up on my 8th birthday as my 8 year old self. Well that wish came true and I went to school and impressed all my teachers, picked up the guitar at a younger age, even started smoking cigarettes young. i graduated college at 16 and work as a college professor at the ripe age of 20.
    Well im writing this because my 21st birthday is coming up in 15 days. The ides of October. I was wondering should i make the same wish and live life again with this even bigger knowledge?

    what would /b/ do?
    >> Anonymous 09/30/11(Fri)22:39:56 No.356078006
    There is no definitive answer. The question does not specify the size or dimensions of the pieces cut or if each must be the same. Therefore, the shortest answer is 10 minutes plus the infinitesimal time it takes to cut 1 molecule from the board, and the time it takes to make another cut the same length as the first one, i.e. a total of 20 minutes.

    He wanted you to do it like this 10 = 2x. Therefore, x=5 and then with 3 pieces you go 3(x) = 15. He was trying to make a problem like that but it's definitely not logically sound in that word problem. Your teacher needs to reread his shit xD

    We have T_cut = 10 minutes/cut
    N_boards = N_cuts + 1
    T_N_boards = N_cuts * T_cut

    We want to solve N_cuts for N_boards = 2, so we write:

    3 = N_cuts + 1 => N_cuts = 3 - 1 = 2 cuts

    The time used for 2 cuts is 10 mins/cut * 2 cuts = 20 minutes.

    to all they guys who say that its a box... look at the damn picture. she was cutting the wood with scissors; (dumbbitch.jpg)the wood's 3rd dimension is unrealistically small, thus making the child assume it was 2 dimensional. it takes the same amount of time to do any cut. so if you cut somthing in half. 2 more pop out. one 10 minute period, 2 peices. second 10 minute period. 3 pieces from beginning, 4 is 4 peices. after 40 minutes.
    >> Anonymous 09/30/11(Fri)22:57:51 No.356078976
    I KNOW WHERE THE TEACHER IS COMING FROM
    but it is his/her own damn fault, still.

    I think by 2 pieces, they meant 2 CUTS. Now,

    10mins/2cuts=5mins/cut

    3cuts*5mins/cut (cancel out cut and you are left with min)

    15 mins

    It's still retarded that they counted it wrong.
    >> Anonymous 09/30/11(Fri)23:00:53 No.356079213
    Love it how some people are giving answers that equate to 15 minutes, although that's just assuming the wood is square, even though directly to the right of the picture the wood is one of those long rectangular ones.

    One cut is 10 minutes, and since you can only cut it one way, the first cut makes 2 pieces of wood, you take one of those pieces and you have to cut it again in the same way, meaning it'd take another 10 minutes.

    No matter how you look at it, the answer is 20 minutes.
