Truecrypt can only be defeated if you're really not careful. Full-disk encryption, with a very long password, and turning off your computer when you don't need it will keep you safe.

Use Tor for any questionable browsing. Configure your browser properly, use common sense while surfing and you'll be fine. I recommend the Browser Security page on the Hidden Wiki for configuring Firefox with Tor.

Using CCleaner and Eraser to get rid of evidence is very helpful too.
