Regarding
abolishing the monarchy in Canada, much of Canada is actually willing
to do this. The problem is that we would have to change our
constitution, which isn't that easy to do (we've tried and failed to do
it before). Interestingly though, the UK wants to change their laws
about gender and succession in the royal family, which would require all
the countries in the commonwealth to change their constitutions, so
with possible pressure from the UK to do this, there's a possibility
we'll just change our constitution and become a republic.
As it
stands, neither the royal family, nor the governor general have any real
power in the country. The governor general is basically told what to do
by the prime minister. Its really more of a symbolic role at this point
anyway. |
