08/18/11(Thu)12:57:48 No.348340193I
dropped out of college after three years, took a manual labor job (in
addition to my part time job at a bar) and rented a room in a house with
a few friends (California fag, single room in a crappy apartment cost
around $600/mo) and lived off almost nothing.
I remember the
first month, I had no money for food, had no clue how to apply for
medicare or food stamps or anything like that, no phone, no internet,
and the water and gas had been shut off at our apartment so we were
washing our dishes in a garbage can with a hose.
Being out of food, one of my roommates and I went to the Salvation army in what would become a monthly ritual.
They
gave us each a grocery bag with a pack of frozen hotdogs, a box of corn
flakes, a ziploc baggie each of oatmeal, rice and dried beans, two
sticks of frozen margarine, two boxes of mac and cheese, powdered eggs
and powdered milk. Then we were allowed to take some bread from this day
old rack the local bakeries would bring.
I know that a lot of
people have had addiction problems and family issues, and I'm not saying
my situation was worse, but there was certainly something extremely low
about being an able bodied person working 60 hours a week and not being
able to afford to feed myself.
Did all the broke hungry fag things one does in that scenario: -Stealing sugar packs from restaurants and making Kool aid -Stealing whatever was on an outdoor display outside supermarkets -Finding fruit trees in neighborhoods -dumpster diving for day olds at the donut shop -Keeping the freezer burned and expired food items from the bar I worked at -Doing odd jobs for food
It sucked, but I feel like I'm a better and more self sufficient person as a result, not that I'd want to go through it again. |
