about Banksy vs Robbo

stickers are good for quick, detailed tags. They seem like they wouldn't last for a while, but never underestimate people's laziness. I have some up that have been around for around 7 years. They are a little faded, but still good. Never take your car. If possible, have some friends around with cars, just in case you need to run for it and need to get picked up quickly. Get them to setup a triangle formation around you, and, if you can figure out a way to have at least one on the phone with you (bluetooth headset), then do that. That way, they can tell you if someone is coming/you can tell them "Meet me here asap" if you have to run

just keep drawing man, design pieces and throw ups all day until you get good. the more you draw, the easier you will find it to translate the design onto a wall with paint. also only buy good quality paint, really helps out... don't fuck around with stencils, freehands the way to go. the rest is practical application and you well just learn how to control paint along the way... for letters it's always a good idea to go round the piece with a second outline and add drop-shadow, brings the piece off the wall a little bit. hope that helps. peace.

You're being too complicated about this. That's kind of like saying "Well if you have sex with your girlfriend, why don't you also have sex with your dog?" They are two very different extremes. And this thread isn't about gang wars and mindless scribbles on a wall, it's about street art. Not something that people use to mark their "Territory", but a piece of art that someone has put a lot of thought and passion and personal risk into.

And you're right, people set their own morals and rules based on their opinions and their peers. By law, painting on someone else's wall is a crime and stabbing a child is also a crime, but this doesn't put them on the same level. Harming people and taking human lives is a horrible thing to do and some people would consider painting on a wall a horrible thing to do, but when you put them side by side, as you are doing, they are two completely separate levels of horrible.

I have 2 replies.

First, I've seen street art that actually WAS very good, and what made it good was that the artist could take all the time they wanted, and stand there in broad daylight with no worries.
That doesn't apply to illegal graffiti. You're on the run, you have little time, you could have to stop at any moment. THIS AFFECTS QUALITY.
Why would a real artist choose a venue that directly reduces the quality of his art?

Secondly, it doesn't matter that it's art. People have a legal right to have their walls not painted on, PERIOD.

I am an artist for a living and i always like it when young people do awesome, pretty or interesting stuff on walls or places they are allowed to. (Banksy is small time compared to that, REALLY smalltime ) They really create great art pieces.

But i don't like it when they go around in town and smear the walls with unreadable scribbles, tags and other shit that either looks plain ugly or just destroys a good looking neighbourhood.

In the town i used to live a group of teenagers asked me someday if they could use the wall of my backyard that just stood there ( was once part of another house ) to spray. They showed me a scribble of it, i liked it, they practiced every few weeks together.

Then some assholes just sprayed MY own house with their retarded tags and OVER the things the teens made. I was SO mad. More mad because they destroyed the young peoples work and for what? for shit.

Good question. It's mostly because they want it in a place that it can be seen, where someone just walking by can stop and look and think and really appreciate it (Also, I might add, a few cans of spray paint and a wall are much cheaper than formal art supplies like canvas, bristol board, and acrylics).

Also, I've known some people who just do it for the sake of FUCK THE POLICE, in which case you could probably use that "Stabbing a kid" argument, but it's still way off on the lawbreaking level.

Buy a blackbook, draw everyday, buy some spraypaint, take one of your sketches and attempt to spraypaint your drawing. Do this for years and take pictures of your stuff to see your progression. Go to artcrimes.com and steal ideas and styles but find out what you like and what your style is. The more you draw the more you will discover your style. Come up with a name no one has thought of, nothing whack like evol or zero. Buy graffiti books and learn your history, the art of getting over, subway art and graffiti world come to mind. Buy them on amazon for like 15 bucks. Only toys quit. Tagging is as equally important because tagging can be just as fun. Don't tag churches or schools. If you get caught always run, an if you're gonna paint off of freeways and high risk spots like in downtown try to go around 2:00am-4:00am no joke, but if you insist on painting after dark whenever then go for it. If tree are people looking at you while you're tagging in the day time, fuck it, hit that shit up and look right at them, they will turn around and mind their own business, especially people in cars. Use rustoleum but buy the ones where you can replace the caps not the shitty ones where you have to use the ones try come with. Buy some fat caps online. Try artprimo.com.

Anyway Don't listen to anyone trying to tell you graff is stupid, go alone, this will teach you to fall in love with vandalism on a real honest level, do not go bombing high or drunk, save that for the celebrating afterwards, try not to hit the same spots over and over, spread your shut across town to really acheive "all city" fame, if one of your homies starts getting down because he sees you getting down, then join him or her and y'all 2 start going out, do it for the flicks, the fun and the fame. Basically what I did was buy a much of different markers and worked on my tag, don't start off all silly with arrows everywhere, stars, just work on your tag or what it is, just do your letters until you start seeing some quality in it. I started out toy as hell, but how I got better was eventually doing bubble letters then working on straight letters, then I go into coloring schemes, 3d, I began drawing bigger and with straight letters, you will learn to eventually make some bends and connects here and there, getting alittle loose with your style, wavy, I call I semi wildstyle. Just draw you name over and over, fill your black book up. It takes me about a year to fill one up with quality shit, then the next year I finish another one, I look at the drawing on the first page of the first book and compare it to the last drawing of the last book and you see the difference. Start with pencil and eraser first. Don't get mad about not being able to draw, you will get better. You just have to discover your style. So remember, first get a tag, then work on some bubble letters, then work on straight letters, steal your letter form right off of the fonts on Microsoft word if you want, keep your letters close and begin overlapping them and what not, then you can start bending the shapes and breaking them apart, drawing lines through your letters making them look cut or broke, start off outlining with black. Idk it's hard to explain it would be easier to show you some sketches. Try http://www.12ozprophet.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=30 and do some studying on these guys sketches, you will never pull of a masterpiece if you don't draw first
