When
I was young, I learned from a far different manner of finding a clearer
concept of my sense of self -- a kind of isolation in the forest -- it
likely has various names. I think this program took its name from First
Nations practices and was called a Vision Quest. But I think many
activities have this name, so I really don't know what is more precise.
In
the morning after breakfast, I hiked to the beach in the pre-dawn fog
and I sat by the ocean for 4 hours. If I wanted to write or draw, I
could, but just sitting, observing and thinking was recommended. After
eating a sack lunch, I found a place a little ways from the water. I
buried myself under some branches and moss but in a place with a view
and with only my eyes exposed. Then I waited for 4 more hours. I just
listened and observed the animals of the forest coming and going. I had
food and water if I needed it, and I could get up and leave to use a
latrine which I had already dug that morning some distance away, if I
needed to. (Actually, I didn't need to use it until I was finished.)
If
any of you want to define or redefine yourselves, you need to find some
way of shutting off the artificially created music, noises, television,
video, games and everything, and just watch the trees blowing in the
wind.
The planking fad sure looks retarded to me, but I can see
how it succeeds at restricting data-input. But I recommend lying on your
back and looking up. |
