Do you recognize the part you play in the so-called 'War on Drugs'? Please understand that I sympathize with you; I know you're just trying to get by. That said, do you understand the harm you do?

4 years ago, was the last time our pay went up, since then we have been furloughed without pay 8 times a year and contributed much more to retirement and insurance

How big of an asshole are you to the inmates, or are you one of the cool ones? Also do you work in county or prison?

most inmates don't realize that we are not their enemy, we are there to enforce rules that keep them safe during their stay. many of the rules seem a bit stupid, but they were put into place for specific reasons because of past problems

Right, I agree that this man doesn't necessarily play an active roll. Prison guards are a part of a broken system, no matter how you look at it.

I am an ex-con. Most CDC officers (obviously I'm from California) aren't bad people. I'm upset that the system is configured in the way that it is, and I'm aware that CDC officers aren't directly responsible for that system. I understand that men want food on the table for their wife and kids. I'm aware that a state government job is an excellent way to be sure one is fed.

Given all that, I still wonder about how you feel re. the ethical component of your job as it relates to society in general, as opposed to a convict.

this is definitely not a job for just anyone. I have friends who tell me they couldn't do it and I agree, some people would just not be a good fit because their life experience has molded them into a person who would not be able to be as impartial as you need to be.

the way I look at it is if I don't do it, somebody else will. and since I'm as capable as the next guy, why not me? I treat everynewt gingrich the same, I don't care why you're here, that part's done. now it's time to play the game by the rules and I and mine will supervise.

How much assrape actually goes on in the prisons?

it's not like the movies portray although it does occur occasionally.
usually the stuff that's reported turns out to be some sort of lovers quarrel or a deal gone wrong and one of the guys makes up a story that he got raped.
there is a new thing called PREA now (prison rape elimination act) where convicts have multiple ways to report sexual assault, it's very effective and has reduced prison rape quite well.
