    Hi /b/,
I've been doing a lot of computer gaming lately (LoL, HoN, Starcraft, WoW) on my Macbook Pro, and it's just not cutting it anymore. I looked into buying a desktop but decided I want to build one instead. I have a few friends at college who are going to give me a hand if I need it, but I wanted to know what /b/ thought of what I have so far. I'm planning on playing The Old Republic and ME3 on it when they come out.

This is the mid-size tower I want (it's pink, yes I'm a girl)

And this is the motherboard I like the best (cheap, best reviews)

So, anything I'm doing wrong? I'm a complete noob at this, so lots of advice would be great!

Props to you for realizing you get more bang for your buck doing it yourself. However, there are a few things I might change/add. First of all, get a CPU cooler. You don't need to do high-end liquid cooling, but at least some sort of Zalman fan cooler to keep things cool.

Also, a brand new rig, but only buying a 500gb drive, in this day and age? WTF? If you torrent stuff and play lots of games, you are going to burn through that 500gb semi-quickly.

And finally, the case... I'm not going to say anything about the color, as that is a preference thing, but did you notice where they put the ports? They look like they are on the side by the floor! Overall, this case just looks really cheap in general, not of great quality. If I were you, I would look into a coolermaster or some other trusted name. They aren't even that much more expensive.

Anyways, good luck! The rest of the setup looks good, actually really similar to what I have going! (I have a Gigabyte Board, AMD Phenom X6 1090T, 4 Gigs of G-Skill ram (need more), and the Radeon HD 5830 (need to upgrade that too)). Of course, this was built about a year ago, so it is a little behind the times sadly. I also have about 3.5TB total in storage, but am only using about 1TB of it right now.

Also, what are you using for a display??? Considering that you are going to be playing a lot of games, this is almost the most important component, besides the graphics card.

This mobo is MUCH better. Recently did 3 builds with it. It will run both PCI-E slots at x16 in crossfire. this will come in handy if you want to upgrade to a second card later on.

One thing I have learned over the years is get the best mobo possible. Everything else can be upgraded later.

You don't need a 700W power supply for that rig. A 400-450W will do just fine. If you go with the bigger one, it will be far less efficient at the lower wattages you'll be drawing from it, producing more heat, consuming more power, and leading to premature failure.

I suggest a Seasonic or Corsair 400-450W model. They are the only good brands I've found.

but the worry with an underpowered PSU is that if it doesn't have enough combined amps on the 12 volt rails to run that bigger GPU. Sure 700 may be overkill but its better than under shooting.

I disagree about the hard drive. No way in hell anyone needs more than 500GB unless you're downloading full HD movies at 50GB a pop (which, on a 19" screen would be absolutely pointless).

I say get the 500GB one for now, and a year or two down the road when/if it fills up, chances are it'll have died anyway and need to be replaced.

It is worth the extra $20 to get an optical drive that uses Sata, if the one from the old Dell is IDE.

GLO for listening to my mobo advice. I do a fair number of builds and never have any issues with asus products. the 1 stars on newegg are usually idiots that dont even know what a bios is... lol

hmmmmm I have read otherwise. it isnt like the thing uses a resistor to get rid of the extra heat. it just doesnt draw as much current. and with less current, less heat is produced in the wires. but there are websites that help you calculate your power supply needs. Just plugging in the other components in the lists and it will tell you what is recomended. Go bigger if you want future expansion.

The seasonic models I spoke of have plenty of room. It's the ones that advertise "400W" when they're really closer to 250W that you have to worry about (i.e. the cheap shitty ones like thermaltake).

It's not that it uses a resistor to get rid of extra power, but the power supply itself does not operate as efficiently at lower wattages (for example, its efficiency may be >80% for 500W+, but <75% for below 500W).

stick with G.Skill for the RAM. great company.

also, i am with the other recommending a different case. The airflow on that one is horrendous. i have used apevia cases in the past and the build quality is HORRENDOUS. i like Antec cases, but there are some other good companies as well.

Also, listen to the guy that said go with a CPU cooler. Overclocking is stupid easy with the black edition chips and you will get way more bang for your buck this way.

u should not be considering building a machine without a GOOD ssd. as in a vertex3 or similar. raiding 2 500GB drives into stripes is still gonna be slow as fuck in comparison.

U still keep a 500G drive (or bigger... even 2GB units are $70 on sale) for big stuff, but get a 120GB or so ssd to use for things where u want speed (system files and your games).

trust me on all those recommendations I made, I have personal experience with all those parts... lol.

You should really bite the bullet and listen on the case part. You can always change out fans or add lighting to get different colors.

also, do not forget to add Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste. You will need it for installing the cpu heatsink.

i disagree, but i'm a sucker for quick response.
i'm also not on as tight a budget as OP obviously is, as i wouldn't go for that cpu (1100T), would grab more ram (assuming windows), would grab a higher end PSU for quiet, def a different case for quiet, and a (budget, as in $60 range) liquid cpu cooler.

Budget is usally where I start with a build. I do most of my builds for other people, and most people I do them for have limited funds. which is why I prefer the midrange AMD chips. tons of bang for the buck. I have never really trusted liquid cooling... lol

    >> Anonymous 06/05/11(Sun)04:21:39 No.332390232
All the idiots in this thread are overwhelming.

If you grab a 750w shitty PSU, it'll fail on you before you hit 500w. If you get a quality 500w, you'll be fine. The best brands are Seasonic, Silverstone, and PC Power & Cooling, hands down. Corsair's good too, and so is Antec, but Corsair can be pretty overpriced.

You don't need to spend extra on "Ripjaws". Going with a cheap $38 set of 2x2GB from Mushkin is going to get you just as far as any G.SKILL pair would do.

Swap the 500GB Caviar with a 1TB Spinpoint F3 from Amazon. It's the same price. The Caviar's SATA3 won't ever kick in because physical hard drives can't even maximize the full speed SATA2 can provide. Only Vertex 3 SSDs have even come close to hitting SATA3 speeds.

To whoever recommended using Artic Silver 5? Yeah, no. If even a DRIP of that squeezes out from the heatsink, your entire build is fried because AS5 contains silver, which, while yes, it conducts heat, it also conducts electricity. Use some MX-2 or MX-4 if you insist on a premium TIM, but under a budget like this, just stick with the stock.

The psu I currently have is a Raidmax and it has good reviews. Should I be looking for a different one anyway? I'll look at cheaper RAM too. Packaging sells me easy, that RAM was just cool looking/had strong reviews
    >> Anonymous 06/05/11(Sun)04:26:09 No.332390778
Now, while we're on the topic of cooling, go with a Hyper 212+ for the CPU heatsink. Hands down.

I also think you should consider going over to Intel. The new Sandy Bridge chips kick AMD's ass in ANYTHING, for cheaper, most of the time. Plus, if you ever want to upgrade, you'll be stuck grabbing a new motherboard, too, because in about a week, AMD is EOLing the AM3 socket. LGA1155 (sandy bridge) is guaranteed to last at least another year, probably longer.
