    >>321071959
What do you mean exactly by "adding more things to salvation?" Salvation is obtained by grace alone. But it isn't quite as simple as Evangelists want to say. They would hold that morality/spirituality/living in accordance to divine scripture would do nothing.

Scripture teaches that one’s final salvation depends on the state of the soul at death. As Jesus himself tells us, "He who endures to the end will be saved" (Matt. 24:13; cf. 25:31–46). One who dies in the state of friendship with God (the state of grace) will go to heaven. The one who dies in a state of enmity and rebellion against God (the state of mortal sin) will go to hell.

For many Fundamentalists and Evangelicals it makes no difference—as far as salvation is concerned—how you live or end your life. You can heed the altar call at church, announce that you’ve accepted Jesus as your personal Savior, and, so long as you really believe it, you’re set. From that point on there is nothing you can do, no sin you can commit, no matter how heinous, that will forfeit your salvation. You can’t undo your salvation, even if you wanted to.

Does this sound too good to be true? Yes, but nevertheless, it is something many claim. Some think that "the person who places his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and his blood shed at Calvary is eternally secure. He can never lose his salvation. No personal breaking of God’s or man’s laws or commandments can nullify that status."

The fact is, that is a great theological question. I recommend you read up on 'venial' and 'mortal' sin and just what Catholic beliefs are around it.

That is what we sincerely hope for, but it isn't always the case. Institution is a beast that does sometimes run amok.

If it was me I'd protect the institution out of loyalty, even if that may severely challenge my religious belief.

How are we saved by grace, if we are expected to live a certain way?

I love how Catholics can only cite a few verses, which seem to indicate that salvation is based upon works/it can be lost. As for eternal security, it's in the Bible. Free grace, it's in the Bible. Salvation based purely on what Jesus did, it's in the Bible.

He that believeth on the Son HATH EVERLASTING life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. - John 3:36

All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. - John 6:37

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. - Eph. 4:30

Just some of the verses that show salvation is forever, because Jesus paid for all of our sins. All of them.

Why is it so hard to believe that God loved us THAT much that He would do all the work ever needed for us to be saved? Why is it so hard to believe that the moment we accept what Christ had done for us on Calvary's cross will have results lasting eternally regardless of our continued works or faith?

“But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband.” In this verse, Paul states that marriage is the “cure” for sexual immorality. First Corinthians 7:2 is essentially saying that, because people cannot control themselves and so many are having immoral sex outside of marriage, people should get married. Then they can fulfill their passions in a moral way.
While practicality does not determine right from wrong, if the Bible's message on sex before marriage were obeyed, there would be far fewer sexually transmitted diseases, far fewer abortions, far fewer unwed mothers and unwanted pregnancies, and far fewer children growing up without both parents in their lives. Abstinence is God’s only policy when it comes to sex before marriage. Abstinence saves lives, protects babies, gives sexual relations the proper value, and, most importantly, honors God.

"Are you saved?" asks the Fundamentalist. The Catholic should reply: "As the Bible says, I am already saved (Rom. 8:24, Eph. 2:5–8), but I’m also being saved (1 Cor. 1:18, 2 Cor. 2:15, Phil. 2:12), and I have the hope that I will be saved (Rom. 5:9–10, 1 Cor. 3:12–15). Like the apostle Paul I am working out my salvation in fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12), with hopeful confidence in the promises of Christ (Rom. 5:2, 2 Tim. 2:11–13)."

Why does the church push it's own views on life, even though these views often lead to misfortune and unhappiness for others? Certainly it is more moral to disagree with a sin but still show compassion and support the sinner than to force reform. Is redemption not a choice to be pursued rather than a path to be forced upon?

I believe compassion is given where it is due for the most part. You are free to disagree, though. I believe the Church after V2 is very good with celebrating the sin from the sinner. But anyone who calls himself Catholic ought to be regulated in accordance to his Church's laws. That sounds a little harsh.

When you commit and vow yourself to marrage, you are committing to divine estate. Much like priestly ordination, you are vowing something that the Catholic faith considers to be sacramental (a way of grace).

In that nature, the faith ordains sex only when it is shared between a man and his 'sacramental' wife.

I hope that made sense. I'm sure there are better answers out there, should you truly be looking for one. :)

    Episcopal priest here.

The problem with your view on sin is that you divide them between venial and mortal. All sin seperates us from the love of God. "For all have sinned..."

And the idea of "personal relationship," "altercall" and "unloseable grace" is the bastardization of good theology,

Its work of God to decide whose soul is saved or damned. Its our responsibility to respond to the calling of the Holy Spirit and crucify our old selves daily.

If you just let go of the idea that the priesthood transmutes grace to priests and that you, as a Catholic priest, are closer to God's divine grace then the laity, youll be able to get married.

Its just a sugestion from the church fathers. Its just a suggestion from Paul. And the truth is, being married changes your relationship with a congregation and your family.

But its symbolic at best. It should be option.

My denomination says that marriage encourages and changes your relationship with the laity. 1) you can relate to their issues, 2) you know what its like to be a Groom and have a Bride, and important image about the love of God for his Church, and 3) to give you an ally in your mission and a person with whom to share your life.

I cant speak for the OPriest but i'll tell you that, having served in several churches, that you have churhces who actively fright gnosticism and those that embrace it.

At the end of the day is is considered a heresy. Christanity teaches that we are totally seperated from God by sin. Our ability to produce or achieve our own salvation (or in the gnostic sense, our own divinity) is impossible. We lack the ability to achieve "eternal goodness" apart from God.

I'm not saying people can't do good things, but the good things you did will have no eternal consequences.

But as for churches that embrace gnosticism, some realize what they are doing; some dont. Liberal progressive Christianity rejects total depravity, so it makes sense for them to believe that our own divinity is possible and achievable through works. Some have even rejected talking about the Holy Spirit in exchange for holy Spirit--that spirit of goodness and chastity that exists in all of us.

So yes, there is still a battle against gnosticism.

I think what he was asking is that if you guys realize that there was no Jesus since there's ample evidence that judaism and christianity were just another form of a very ancient religion that started in Sumer. There are many dying and resurrecting messiahs or gods, Osiris is a good example, in mithraism their main figure was said to be born on a day that by todays calendar is 25 of december and that was before christianity, gnosticism studied all this and it wasn't a religion by the way it's a philosophical approach to religion

Please defend the practice of Confession and the existence of the Pope so I can have a good laugh. Both come between God and his children, and by ascribing to these beliefs, so do you.

Also I think it's funny that you refer to your past of being a 'fair-weather protestant,' and then decide to join a church renowned for killing people en mass, corrupting entire governments, issuing pardons for sins at a monetary fee, surrounding themselves in decadence (cathedrals, garb and otherwise), and worshiping the Virgin in lieu of God... as well as participating in idolatry (the crucifix), creating an image of Jesus' likeness, and uncounted other sins.

    Explain this: http://www.emperors-clothes.com/vatican/cpix.htm

And explain how you can--willingly or not!--become a priest for a church responsible for killing God's only Son.

And this, from a mere layman in terms of christianity...

"Since Christ entrusted to his apostles the ministry of reconciliation, 65 bishops who are their successors, and priests, the bishops' collaborators, continue to exercise this ministry. Indeed bishops and priests, by virtue of the sacrament of Holy Orders, have the power to forgive all sins 'in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.'"
-Catechism of the Catholic Church #1461

Christ made Peter the leader of the apostles and of the church (Matthew 16:18-19). In giving Peter the “keys of the kingdom,” Christ not only made him leader, but also made him infallible when he acted or spoke as Christ’s representative on earth (speaking from the seat of authority, or “ex cathedra”). This ability to act on behalf of the church in an infallible way when speaking “ex cathedra” was passed on to Peter’s successors, thus giving the Church an infallible guide on earth. The purpose of the papacy is to lead the Church unerringly.

Killing people, was it in the Pope's Will? Probably not. If so? Corruption.
I've never heard of church corrupting gov't. I've heard of the gov't trying to cuppriot church.
The remission of sins for money? Corruption and harsh culture.
Cathedrals? The martyrs and saints died for it. Worshiping the Virgin? In all of my days, the closest I've heard of Virgin worship is that "the virginity is praiseworthy", probably referring to the conception. There's a difference in veneration and adoration. Idolatry? You're calling the crucifix an idol? It is an icon. Idolatry is not present in that it is honoring the God Almighty and that we don't believe that the wood and paint is divine in its self. Idols that were punished were worshiped, not iconed.

It is 100 percent literal in a real presence of Christ and a real divinity, but it can not be taken in literal Blood and Body, obviously. It is the sacrificial blood and body. Much like the Sacred Heart, so to speak. Standing for something that isn't literal in its wording but is a very real divine presence.

Transubstantiation is when the bread and wine literally becomes the body and blood of Jesus but at the same time all that is exhibited to our 5 sense remains that of the physical properties of bread and wine.

This is why the concept of God can't be rationally refuted.

so let me see if I understand this, If a priest does something bad it's corruption and therefore the rest of the church should not be blamed, even if you guys put him there and all that, if another priest protects him that's also corruption and the church cannot be blamed for what a corrupted does and if for century the church burned people and commanded kins to go to war (if you contradict this it means you have now knowledge of history what so ever) that's also corruption and the church can not be blame.
So in your vision, the church is tis abstract entity full individuals who if are discovered to be criminals and rapists down to the fucking last then that's like totally not the churches fault, it's not like this are your brothers or something, it's not like you put them in those positions , it's not like you have a chain of command, you're the fucking church right, you are pure and good, period.

Jesus said, "No one can come to the Father except through me." Explain where Peter is mentioned in that. Peter was an apostle, and only that. As was Judas, and we all know how THAT turned out.

An image is a symbol is an icon is an idol, let's not get into the bloody semantics. Idolatry is worship of any kind of symbol. And you will in no wise convince me that it is not worship to bear this idol in your churches, and on your person, and to have it synonymous with your very religion by anyone who's heard of the catholic church... Aside that, it's a bold statement to emblemize the death of Jesus, and in the next breath claim to worship Him.

Remember: God made his Covenant with the Levites, not the catholic church. And anyone who was not a Levite was killed for even entering the tabernacle. Not to say the Jews are perfect, but I wholly dispute the legitimacy of the catholic church. Was is started by Peter? Yes. That's about where it ends.

Holy shit, man, do you even pay attention to history? The crusades were endorsed and ENCOURAGED by the Pope!

As regards the church corrupting governments, the Pope could excommunicate anyone, regardless of status, be he king or peasant. And kings WERE excommunicated. This means there was a decisive power over countries by the church, which means corruption.

I'm not even going to get into the whole 'saints' thing. God chooses saints, not men.
    >> OPriest 04/07/11(Thu)09:55:27 No.321085649
First what does the Catholic determine " meat " as. " St. Thomas Aquinas, described the animals whose flesh is not permissible to consume as those "animals that take their rest on the earth, and of those that breathe the air and ... those that walk on the earth. "There fore meat as defined in the Catholic Church did not include Fish and many other sea living animals ( even mammals that live in the water ) As you can see this is man made leniency definition , not a technical definition. I personally do not eat any fish or "meat" unless it is easter lamb.
