Alright - I am a foreigner who has lived in China for the past 18 years. Have seen and experienced many many things during that time and am more than happy to share.

    Ask anything.

    >> Anonymous 04/08/10(Thu)22:49:47 No.214884XXX
Yes - corruption is endemic at senior government and business levels. Police can be bribed over small infractions but less likely over more serious offences.

How bad is the filtering and blocking of the media? Can you watch foreign TV, how much of the internet is filtered?

Also, do they ever get over the fact you're clearly foreign, even if you speak the language fluently?

The Great China Firewall blocks more of the internet today that 10 years ago. Government censorship of the internet is at its highest at the moment.

Some housing compounds do have access to foreign TV but most Chinese prefer to watch local Chinese TV as it better accords with their won world views.

Language is an interesting one. In public many Chinese will stop talking freely if they think there is a foreigner close by who might be able to understand.

Yes - I can read and write simplified and speak fluent putonghua and Shanghainese.

Beijing is a great city to visit (I acknowledge bias as I lived there for 8 years). Shanghai is OK. Shanghai nightlife is amazing if you are under 30 and have a little cash to throw around.

Sichuan is spectacular - great natural scenery and amazing food.

What do they truly think about the West, America in particular. I know some Chinese foreign exchange students at my school who wanted to come because they wanted the American college experience. They seemed to be enjoying themselves here. But what do people who have never been abroad think about America?

I have spent the last five years in Shanghai. Officially a Mandarin speaking city but most all locals speak Shanghainese instead.

Relationships with locals can be fun and rewarding but I try and avoid them.

I was originally born in Germany, went to school in the UK, university in Australia and then 18 years in mainland China.

It's hard to say that a huge country like China (1.36 billion nd counting) ever thinks with one single opinion about something as broad as the "West".

In general, most Chinese are incredibly proud of their country and patriotic. The "West" is a place where ideas and investment come from.

What compelled you to go somewhere with less liberties, where you'd always be viewed as a foreigner as opposed to the western lifestyle and affluence?

When you say you avoid relationships with locals, does that mean you date other immigrants/foreigners or live a fairly single life?

The police are only a hassle before the major holidays here (Spring Festival etc) and when major events are to begin (Beijing Olympics, Shanghai Expo). The police presence here in Shanghai is severe at the moment due to Expo.

Many young Chinese are very keen to show their English language skills and "language exchange" is often a precursor to a relationship.

Most Chinese assume that I work as I am not that old yet (despite my very silver head of hair.

Communism is a goal - not a state. China describes its self as being Socialism with Chinese Characteristics.

Communism is something that is reach after political and economic transformation occurs - one such transformation requires the adoption of capitalism.

China aims to become a truly Communist state within the "next 50 years".

Upon leaving, where do you speculate you would go to? Back to the west? Would you want to leave for want of variety or for finding the more oppressive state tiresome?

And this is just me speculating from my opinion, but do you miss using English less often?

English has so many synonyms and paraphrases, pronunciations and tones to express anything you wish as eloquently or rudely as you wish. It is a language of true variety, whereas in my very limited experience (my friends at school are all HK exchange students, know them for 9 months or so) their language seems to recycle the same words very often, with very little use of synonyms, and the same tones used all the time. But then as someone who doesn't understand the language, maybe I'm missing the subtle changes in their speech? (They speak Cantonese, btw)

Sorry for a text as large as your great wall, hope you reply regardless.

My own view is that over Taiwan they are willing and would take the first shot.

Taiwan is a very important part of maintaining one-Party rule in China. The basic contract the Chinese government has with its citizenry is that they will tolerate the-Party state on the condition that Taiwan is brought back to the fold.

China does not today believe that it can successfully take the island. Over time its military confidence will grow.

The three points are nipples, anus and vagina.

Very rarely do I feel that my rights are impinged here. Very rarely.

Most of my adult-life friends are here. My home is here. Most days can believe that I have made some small changes. I love the daily constant challenges of living in a very foreign place.

These might not sound like reasons to others and I respect that.

But my life is here now and I don't envisage leaving any time soon.

You act as if this is a static, black and white comparison. China and America are vastly different countries on a cultural level, and no man can use any sort of universal system to judge the merits of each. Different people prefer different things, and accepting that is part of what it means to be a modern human. I may not have chosen the exact path that the OP has, but I recognize that he has his reasons, and that he is content with his life.
