First get a stock image of some black wings, then download some feathers, copy paste feathers randomly to create chaos.
I might see some abstract brushes there, don't know for sure.
The shadows are done manually, requires a basic understanding of shadowing.

Not OP, but firs of all, Macromedia was bought out by Adobe a few years ago. Its now Adobe Fireworks. Second, Fireworks is designed for web designers, if that's you're field, or there's some feature in it that you need for your field, its probably better for you. For other people, Photoshop is better. Some people even use a combination of the two, or add in other applications. They're just tools, you should use the one that's best for the job, provided you know how to use it.

Photoshop is a raster

Illustrator is better for certain things and can do some different shit and make shit easier.

They are both non comparable and do totally different jobs. You can do things possible in illustrator in photoshop, but illustrator can make some of those things much much easier.

Think of it this way, its like a combination of photoshop and illustrator (In terms of graphic capabilities), but just the stuff that a web designer would use. It was sort of Macromedia's answer to people creating images for websites in photoshop. Its well integrated with Dreamweaver.
