Also changing the display is fucking annoying, in Windows just hit Win + P (for projector) and it swaps the dispaly seamlessly. No x.conf files, no frequencies.

Tried opensuse 11.2 for a few months,

    - Dual monitor support is horrid if you don't have Nvidia

    - No Compositing due to dual monitor problems

    - Software is lacking, media player that doesn't automatically update the music library? come on.

    - Making iPod work was fuuuuuuun

    - Sleep to disk/ram sucks so bad, randomly decides to crash on you so you have to reboot the whole box.

    - The most random thing can decide to stop working and you have to spend hours trying to fix it :-/

    - Opensuse forums suck balls

    - Fucking everything takes too much effort.

I've tried it and learned that I want to USE my OS, not constantly fiddle with it cause it's not working properly.

ITT: common misconceptions about linux. It's just as easy to install programs on linux as on windows, it's just different so it looks harder. Also, if programmers programmed using pictures and icons instead of text then windows would be a 'programmer's' OS. Most linux distros simplify installation by not dicking around with wizards and registry keys like windows.

You're all just too adjusted to the windows way of thinking to consider that, given some time, another method may turn out to be easier.

Too lazy to reboot, too lazy to set up Eclipse workspace again, want games from time to time, performance is sometimes very sub-par.

For servers, it's great. For desktops, unfortunately only if it has *everything* you want. As soon as it lacks something, a quasi-pirated Windows 7 (I only have the upgrade disc, so no existing older OS) is fine too.

I've used Debian for a couple of years, and I hardly played games then (apart from an occasional round of UT2004) or did Flash thingies (it works, but it's slow).

It is not easier to code everything than clicking icons and whatnot. Linux is annoyingly difficult to configure, it can't play games unless it's through an emulator(Which is buggy, crap and annoying) and any type of editing is seriously hindered. Windows beats it in every sense except for maybe servers. Sure Linux is free, but i'd rather spend the money on Windows 7, as I'll be leading a less stressful life. W7 is a piece of piss to pirate anyway..

90% of all here only touched linux once and got scared.

truth be told: no matter how much it strives to be user friendly, it's still geeks first, then the rest.
on the other hand, geeks would enjoy it. the rest it depends on the flip of the coin: either they like it, or not.
who doesn't? mostly youngsters too lazy to actually learn something, anything, and oldfags that are too old and used to something that they don't want to change. it's understandable.

as for programs? games, yes, it's not a platform for gaming, and it doesn't have all the super-paid software, but it works just fine with the rest.

so, any of you that just tasted, or worse -- heard -- and remained with those conclusions, use forst, then judge. and when you use, make it a neutral judgement, otherwise you do nothing but bitch for nothing.

    inb4 ubuntu user, (free)bsd too.

Admittedly, it's not a gamer's OS, but a lot of people don't play games anyway. If you want to game, stick with windows.

As for editing, not sure exactly what you mean. For programming it's obviously got more capabilities than windows; for graphics etc I'm not sure but I've heard GIMP is nearly as good as photoshop.

It is actually easier to use text based commands than a gui because it's faster, once you know the commands. Using a keyboard is far faster than using a mouse and though the icons help you at first, once you get used to the sequence they just become a hindrance.

It's annoying to configure if you're used to wizards, otherwise I find it remarkably simple. The convention being to put all configurable properties into a single file I can edit at will, and maybe have to restart a service. I have dicked around so many times in the registry to try to get slightly different behaviour out of windows software because there was no other external way to configure the programs.

The Old Timer: (Also known as "oldfag") The Old Timer's been around since the beginning (or a very long time, anyway), and isn't going to let you forget it. They too have an overdeveloped sense of entitlement, but this time it's based on how much time they've invested rather than money, or devotion. Because they?ve stuck with it over the years, they believe that they're far more important to the franchise than these kids and 'Johnny-come-latelys' who have only just arrived, and resent the show changing in any way to include them. They view the franchise through a sharp Nostalgia Filter; the show is never as good as How It Used To Be, and any criticisms raised of the show at / before this point will be viciously rebuffed. Especially long-running properties will attract Old Timers who will resent and attempt to get rid of younger fans who had the misfortune of being born after the property (and they) were. It can also happen to works that are no longer in production (classics) - but still manages to attract younger fans. Essentially, they're the grumpy old men of the fandom constantly complaining about the good old days and shouting at the "young whippersnappers" to "get off their lawn", saying that they're too young to deserve it. LOLOLOLOLOOLOLOLOL

Notice how most of the attacks on linux are directed at either its inability to play games or wine. It is not an OS for gaming and probably never will be. If you don't use the OS because wine sucks, then wtf did you expect? Hurr durr I'll use linux and then spend all my time trying to emulate windowz. For gamerfags dual booting is acceptable too (as long as you boot profile so you don't have to wait for 2 minutes everytime you fancy a quick game).

I use fedora 11 dual booted with windowz 7 incase I fancy playing a game.

This is the problem. Even if you find an answer for the problem on windows, too often you're barred from fixing it yourself. Would you seriously think it's better to re-install everytime something goes wrong?
Also, there's already a shit ton of problems microsoft supplies straight from the box.

    >>212000660
I take it you had a bad experience?
    >> Anonymous 03/31/10(Wed)10:22:22 No.212002XXX
Now that I'm used to linux but use both, I find windows lacks a fair bit of power. My pet hate is installing/uninstalling on windows. Next? Next? NEXT? WHERE THE FUCK DID YOU EXPECT ME TO WANT TO INSTALL IT? NO I DO NOT WANT TO READ THE DAMN README.

Then uninstalling - hunting down four billion shortcuts strewn throughout the filesystem, having to go through the god damn control panel every time I want to make sure it's gone and STILL finding residue in the registry incase I have changed my mind about using it. God it sucks.

If games were developed for linux, it would be a far more widely used OS. That said, I still don't know why a lot of companies and organisations insist on using windows in the workplace. It's just not as nice.

Look on your laptop for a sticker that says 'designed for windows'. Chances are HP used hardware that only caters to windows and put that sticker on as a disclaimer. I've had two HP laptops and neither ran well with linux - one had graphics card incompats and the other wireless card problems and hard drive issues.

That said, if you do have a laptop that can run linux it will nearly always be a faster OS than windows.

"First Linux was not really capable of using my ISP's USB WLAN module."
    Proprietary shit sux.

"Next try there where no working 64bit drivers for my sound card."
    Who seriously needs a soundcard?
I'm not saying that this isn't a problem though. Now I'm blaming the sofware card's manufacturer for not making a wide range of drivers.
Everyone seems to think that making this shit is easy. Do you honestly think that these people are going to spend shit tons of money into computer hardware manufacturers to persuade them into building computers with hardware tailored to gnu/linux distrobutions? No.
Be smart and buy hardware that is listed as having drivers supported by the distrobution you want to use.
Don't take for granted that shit is going to work for a computer that was made to run microsoft software when bill gates spends a nice chunk of money to get computer manufacturers to do shit his way.

Next time I had problems watching flash videos.
I'm actually having the same problem with my windows 7 box. There's a huge epidemic stemming with the latest version of flash. You might want to check into that. Google "adobe flash crash problem"
