Pointless gameplay used to cause controversy and boost sales

You didn't have to shoot anyone, but me personally I shot everything even the wounded crawling on the floor.

this mission was sooo boring in the first half and annoying in the second half
the whole campaign was screwed

Yeah it's controversial, but it's also meant to be a powerful moment (although they kind of overdid it)

It's supposed to be like "Holy shit, blah blah" and then later it causes a chain of events that put into motion the rest of the game

The fact that you can dodge this mission (no intels and the like) kind of sucks the air out of the game a bit, it is after all a significant piece of plot.

i actually cried from the awesomeness of killing civillians. i still play that mission. it gave me hope for WW3

i always tried to kill makarov and his goons but then i found out i actually had to COMPLETE the mission to move on so i just slautered som russians

If the goal of the devs was for the player to feel the relentlessness of a terrorism, then they succeded. I was more moved by the aftermath of that event. Russians invaded US soil. It would be a grim day indeed.

Personally if we're talking about bad influence from video games the like of this is not really comparable to, say GTA IV.

The level is part of the story, and addresses a real world issue with secret services and undercover agents everywhere (for example alleged collusion of MI5 agents who were members of the IRA, who could have prevented a specific crime but at the cost of their cover, and hence perhaps preventing greater crimes). The player can choose to "fake" by firing above the civilians heads if they want (though few do).

Not many people playing this game are ever going to be undercover agents, or even terrorists. In contrast many may be tempted to become criminals, and GTA IV is a crime simulator and glorifies crime. So why did this seem more controversial to some people?

Biggest disappointment of 2009.

I was disappointed by the utter lack of any real security or armed response except for like 3 random donut eaters at the airport, and how the civilians didn't... you know... actually run -away- from the crazy men with guns but kept jumping into the line of fire.

It was fun or about 30 seconds until u realize that u can't run, the civilians can't fight back at all, and the civilians are the same 4 people repeated. Only slightly fun part of the mission was killing the cops, better than shooting random people who just run.
