I am... Kazaam!

First off, I'm not some overly sensitive bleeding heart jackass who flips out at the slightest possibility of racism in a movie/tv show/etc. I generally don't care at all about negative stereotypes or any of that stuff.

But even I couldn't help but be taken aback by the racism in this movie.

First off, why is the kid white? This is a kid in the innercity, who absolutely loves hip-hop/rap music, and has an absent father. I don't want to get into stereotypes myself here, but statistically speaking it would be much more realistic and FAR more likely for this to be a black child.

Now, the only reason I started thinking about the racial issue, and the reason this becomes a problem, is that there are numerous scenes throughout the film where this kid relishes in the fact that he now OWNS this genie. So we have a white kid owning a black genie. I'm sorry, but given the plot elements which already make it odd for this character to be portrayed as white, the whole "owning of a black genie" thing is simply too much for me to overlook. What makes this even worse is that this kid acts like a complete tyrant to this genie. He verbally abuses him and puts him down constantly.

As if this wasn't bad enough, the main villain of the film is middle eastern. I can understand middle easterners being used as villains in action movies featuring plots about terrorism, but not here. There is absolutely NO reason for the villain to be made middle eastern. So we have a short, fat, evil middle eastern slob who feasts almost nonstop throughout the movie, including a scene where he chows down on a plate of eyes with almost orgasmic delight. Nice.

Now, I might be going overboard by calling it racism, it might be better and more accurate for me to simply call it political incorrectness(something I'm usually a big fan of). But the level of political incorrectness in this film is so absurd, so over the top and outrageous, especially for a family/kids film, that I can't help but feel it goes too far and borders on flat out racism.

I think the problem is that, at the time, there were NO talented black children actors. To throw a black kid in there, just because, without any real talent would've taken away from the movie, and made it painful to watch.
