You can really minimize the risk quite a bit, but even still, the reward is so tiny that the time investment between stealing what you can carry and selling it at hot-goods prices is just not worthwhile.

I've broken into very well-off people's houses, too, a guy with a grandfather clock collection, a big family with lots of big TVs, pinball machines, people with pools, 6 bedroom, 4 bathroom houses, etc etc...

I think my biggest haul was a nice firearm, about $300 in cash, and a laptop.

Nonetheless, you can have all that legally in about 2 weeks of legit work with no risk of going to jail/getting shot in the face. It's just not a good tradeoff no matter how you slice it, until you roll up the truck and start snatching widescreens, and even then, the risk shoots up because it's pretty hard not to notice people stealing TVs and couches and shit.

I work Loss Prevention for a 24 grocery store. Some tips from the person looking for you.

For this scenario were going to say you want to steal liquor.

1. Do NOT go directly to the department. Grab a cart walk around the store grab a few common items. Get a know for where the cameras are and are not.
2. Most stores liquor has 2 entrances. Use the one you would consider the "back" or "side" entrance. Most guards focus on the heavily traffic areas.
3.Do NOT grab and go. Spend more than 1:30 seconds but less than 4:00 any less is PC in some states to stop you at the door. Any more and you might attract attention.
4.Think back to isles where you didn't see a camera. Go there. IF its a "Tag" alarm system. Peel and dispose of behind/on another product. Do not leave it on the floor or in plain view. If your caught they can charge you with burglary *intent*. Some stores require the guards to see you attempt to conceal/remove security tags.
5. This should of been at the top but im lazy and don't want to change numbers. Clothes. If you wear a black trench coat in the summer or that giant bears coat you deserve to be caught. Wear weather appropriate clothing. In the winter car-harts make the hardest to determine if its just a natural bulge or a bottle. If you think there is something noticeable don't put it there.

6. At this point your ready to make your exit. Abandon your cart and make your way to the exit. Do not walk fast, casually 'stroll' out. A good technique is grabing a soda and paying for it. but if your afraid of someone noticing stop and grab one of those free magazines they always have.

7. Fight or Flight In most every state if you strike a security guard who is attempting to stop you its the same thing as hitting a cop. DON'T do it. IF you want to run thats fine but do not fight him. If at any point you think they've made you ditch the stuff and get out as fast as possible

and if you want to expand your horizons, shops with sensors are still do-able. alot of the time, the sensors are fake. a good way to tell if theyre fake (apart from closely examining them) is to watch the store and if any of the workers stand at the door to check bags, then its most probably fake. i used to work at these retail stores and so i know. if every single item of clothing in the store has tags on them and the sensors look legit then your best bet would be to forget about it. if you do set off the sensors you can either run (no one will catch you unless your fat) or just turn back into the store and try to look at one of the employees and give them a gesture of 'my bad' as if you walked too close the edge, and just continue 'browsing' and then ditch the clothes and walk out because u wud have the attention of the workers.

it always helps to have a friend handy to keep a lookout but also to distract the workers. easy stuff gentlemen

An advice to all my fellow /b/tards stealing from stores:
NEVER EVER STAY AROUND AFTER YOU STEAL SOMETHING. Get the fuck out. This seems like common sense, but if you're with a friend or two, you might want to browse at whatever shit's on the shelf, just fucking don't. The only time I've been caught I stuck around the store for 10 minutes or so (WalMart) after picking up the items. They often will see you stealing on cameras, but they have to catch you going out of the store.

Another protip for starters:
It is a common misconception that barcodes go off in the scanners leaving the store. This is completely false, and I do not understand where it comes from. There is three major things that to look for that will go off.
1. White plastic strips with a slightly raised center. These are very common and will be on or inside (in cases of headphones/cheap mp3s) most larger items (not candy).

2. Large round plastic things. I do not know what they are actually fucking called, they are usually in clothes and will occasionally spray ink if you try to detach them. These will go off, the only safe way to remove them is to rip the fabric that it's attached to, don't try to break these.

3. Security boxes. Don't even try to fuck with these, just leave them alone.

Not a theef. I have removed these from clothing that they forgot to remove them from when it was purchased. It takes time and patience. Probably five minutes each. So not something that you could do in the store.
