02/24/10(Wed)06:51:44 No.200925XXX>>200924733 Historically,
depending on period, the katana was 23-28in long, blade width 1'1/4in.
about 2lbs.
The rapier was anywhere between 36'-46'in long,
about 1in wide, and about 2.2lb
So we can see straight up, that
they both have about the same mass, same blade width. neither has a
major advantage for overpowering through mass. However, you can see that
even the shortest rapier has about 10 inches of lenght, with the
shortest katana being half the size of the longest rapiers, that would
be a 23inch advantage to the rapier. This means the rapier can hit the
hand, arm, body, face, and be though the body of the katana fighter
before his tip of the katana can even reach the hilt of rapier.
The
protective guard on the rapier allows for blocking cuts to the hand,
the katana has very little protection, effectively none. The hands would
be a prime target for the rapier fighter. if the katana fighter can not
hold his sword, the fight is over.
The rapier has an effective
range of 12 feet at its deepest lunge, this is without picking up the
back foot. To my knowledge the katana form does not really have a real
lunge but advancing steps, restricting its effective range. |
