Combined with ridiculous malpractice suits and the drug companies being in bed with congress the cost of healthcare is very high. In procedures that are almost never covered by health insurance such as LASIK eye surgery a competitive market gas emerged abd the cost of that procedure has dropped drastically with the best doctors rising to the top. Simply demanding insurance and taxing to pay for it increases the tax burden especially on the entreprenurial and professional classes that drive an economy and raises unemployment.

Canada has a smaller proportion of GDP taken up by healthcare relative to the USA. As do many European countries.
