I don't know if it's a disease or not. I guess I'm inclined to say that it's NOT a mental illness... but then, maybe it is. There are other paraphilias that are diagnosed as mental illnesses if they cause harm to the self or others... and practicing pedophiles certainly fall into that category.

I will say this: it's good of you to realize that you shouldn't hurt children. I can't imagine what it would be like to have to be celibate my whole life, or to know that most people would treat you like a monster despite the fact that you haven't hurt kids.

People just can't tolerate it, as while all other fetishes involve consenting adults, a child cannot consent, for they are too young to truly understand. For this reason, if you acted on these impulses and actually harmed a child, you would be a fucking sicko, but I think you'd be surprised how many people are actually attracted to children, but would never act on the impulse, or even mention it because of the taboos associated with the idea. In addition, it is quite likely that pedophilia developed as an evolutionary survival mechanism, as seeking out a mate at the 'peak' of sexual development is greatly beneficial in passing on these genes to further generations.
