I was impressed that he castigated Dems for their spinelessness, especially for running in permanent election mode. They have a majority, they just need to exercise it while they still can.

I'm glad he mentioned the fact that the choice between liberty and security is a false one. I wish he brought up more protecting civil liberties, but he really hasn't done enough on it to talk much on it.

He was funny at times. I actually smiled. Yet he should have told maybe a couple fewer jokes. It's nice to see self-deprecation and wit, but anything repeated ad nauseum gets old. Even if it comes from the President of the United States.

It was nice to hear him go after banks and Wall Street without sounding like some kind of ham-handed Michael Moore. Likewise he never mentioned George W. Bush, but was able to skillfully repudiate the Republicans for wanting to go back to the Bush/Reagan policies of the 2000s.

I wish he didn't mention "clean coal," an oxymoron in itself. He needs to choose one way or another, to work to support for the environment or to keep the status quo. Too much compromise, or oppressive centrism, leads to much money being spent, lots of yelling and screaming, and little accomplishment.

Brave man, talking about repealing "don't ask, don't tell." It should be compared to the actions Truman took to desegregate the military.

President Obama had a relatively good State of the Union address, imho. As far as the democratic party is concerned, he chastised republicans enough to tell them to start contributing to the overall legislative process. As a president he announced some foolhearty plans, such as removing foreign exportation company incentives while still claiming to double the exported goods. He still has not realised from this past year that he should lower his expectations. Though it seems as though he has changed in the past year, he still thinks that all of these hopeful dreams of an idealist can become realities. But the cold hard truth of the matter is none of this is possible without unfettered support from both sides of the aisle without lobbyists, earmarks, and corruption. And this is simply the impossible folly of an idealist.

Overall, as a committed liberal, I wish he was doing more, but if you only listened to his speech, you'd think he was a lot braver and more committed a liberal than he has governed as so far. Just like with candidate Obama, it's all pretty good and well delivered. Now he needs to take it out of the hands of those fuckwits Pelosi and Reid and with his pragmatic liberalism change the fundamentally unprogressive way we have governed since Reagan.
