I am studying to be an engineer. I am not supposed to want a relationship. How do others suppress their desires and just do work? That is what I am supposed to do, just work. But my stupid brain won't let me ignore my desires like I used to be able to do. I'm only 20. Is there a certain age range where those unrealistic desires go away?

You can have a social life and a relationship while studying to be an engineer. What's so unrealistic about it?

Are you working 100 hour weeks in order to make good grades? If you're only working 40-80 hours in college, that leaves at least some time left for socializing (which is, coincidentally, necessary for your mental health.).
>>

You can be aloof about it, make it clear to the women that you are focused on your career but that you have urges and desires, and you would like to express those with them, but can not at this current time devote as much attention to a 'relationship' as most women would like. If they're ok with that, then you work, have sex, then work, ocassionally eat maybe. tldr: Not all women need 100% of your time and resources.

>I am not supposed to want a relationship.

Who told you this, don't be an idiot, uni is the perfect place to meet young, high-esque class woman. The student in my class with the highest GPA has had the same gf since freshman year.

Some advice an MD gave me; most people can only learn for 8 hours a day, beyond that you will retain very little of what you learn, the best time of the day to learn is during daylight hours, you should spend the rest of the day staying fit/lifting, reading outside your field etc. and go out to socialize and relax at least biweekly.

In fact, you should she socializing as part of your work. An Engineer's networking and communications skills need to be exceptional for the industry to function properly.

tl;dr: You have enough free time, go get some pussy.

>>12709207

dude, chill the fuck out and get over this broken, invalid perspective on life.

The planet does not need you to be a goddamned monolith of computing. You aren't a computer. Stop thinking that, it's dumb.

And don't try and separate and other-ise your interest in relationships. Those impulses? Those interests? That's -you-. YOU want that. Denying yourself pleasure is only going to fuck you up.

I could phrase all of this a lot better and get into way more detail, but it's pissing me off how much of an idiot you're being, so I can't be bothered.

Technology =/= purpose of life. Enjoy the world you goddamned moron.

You don't have to take this perspective to accomplish that!

Wanting to improve the world is a great impulse. Don't twist it around so that you deprive yourself of what YOU (and those hormones are YOU, don't try to separate them) want.

You know who revolutionized and improved the world? Benjamin Goddamned Franklin. Brought forward an age of revolution and revaluing the importance of the individual and their rights while fucking basically every french woman he could get his hands on, then settled down with the woman he loved. He did way more than you ever will, he ushered in a new -country- that had an amazing golden age even if it is shit now, and he still found the time to enjoy life.

You will actually be completely unable to expand other people's happiness if you yourself are not happy. That's a fact.

OP getting a SO that is in your major really does help. You have someone to study with and relate with.

I would avoid someone in a foofy major. I had a ex that was a english major and another who was a education major.
They always bitched about all the non-existent work they had to do.
No wonder why our educational system is so shitty...

OP, dedicate one day of the week to yourself/having fun.
>>
>>12709420
I've had a crush on a girl in my class for 3 years now, she shows interest towards me and even lightly flirts with me occasionally (more heavily when we first starting talking to each-ohter), but I know she has a bf. It's frustrating and sometimes even depressing as hell so I know where you're coming from.

But the thing is as soon as I went outside my usual circles and found plenty of other girls that are interested in me I get the same feelings towards those girls that I had (or have) for the one in my class.

In any case, I'm pretty sure I'm not in love with her, my it's just constant pheromone exposure or something, idk, I'm not an MD.
>>
>>12709458
maybe*
>>
>>12709458
I've done that too, gone out and met other people. I get the same feelings too, I believe it's some type of pheromone thing going on but idk anything about that. Problem is that, when I ask myself if I could be with them and ever truly believe them to be better than the one I already love, I can't say that I could. And that's not fair for someone to always be 2nd best. So I'm not sure what to do about that.
>>
>>12709508
I don't know what to say other than
>I know that feel

I mean if I objectively look at it I've met girls who are hotter and just as smart as her, idk hopefully it stops when we graduate, just don't try to be friends with her.
>>
>>12709539
I haven't seen her for 2 years. We go to separate colleges. She has a boyfriend she started dating after high school who has also been her best friend since 9th grade.

>dat horribad feel
>>
>>12709595
God, that sucks man. This thing is destroying you and apparently it's not going to go away.

I think you have to tell her how you feel, even if she has a boyfriend, you have to do it for yourself. I mean in a way that makes it clear you don't really expect anything, I'm guessing she hinted interest towards you before too, so maybe it won't be so bad.

I told her in 11th grade how I felt. Her birthday was a few weeks before school started and on the first day I gave her a poem I wrote for her. Nothing ever really developed from that because I knew she wouldn't like me to begin with, but I wanted to tell her how I felt anyway.

I think it has destroyed me, yes. That's why I just want to do work and that alone until I die, so that other people can enjoy life since I don't really anymore.

Thanks for understanding though. Most people don't realize how such a thing is uncontrollable for some people. It's rare, but still.

>That's why I just want to do work and that alone until I die, so that other people can enjoy life since I don't really anymore.

I felt exactly the same for a while, it fucked with my grades too if I'm honest. Though eventually I considered it and my personal happiness in general to be a small matter in "the grand scheme of things". I studied outside my field a lot, not just Science and Engineering, but also philosophy etc. and in general focused on self-improvement while living a fairly solitary lifestyle.

But the thing is I know that I'm not exactly a genius, my contributions would always be meager at best. So I started focusing less on my degree and more on whatever interested me at the time, I became very depressed (and sometimes still am, but due to my other limits, not because of some girl), it does NOT get better, I don't know how some people can do it.

But now, you have to move on see, if what you're doing right now isn't working for you, you need to start dating again or doing something, anything(!) else, if you're lucky enough you'll find a nice gf that understands your busy schedule and allows you to focus on your studies again. The bright side to all this is that I've found that all my self-improvement really paid off in the dating game, I've plenty got great woman lining up, being cultured, intelligent and prospect of and engineering salary is very attractive to women even if your not Physically attractive (though I recommend you start lifting/playing sports if you don't already to not only improve the later, but also improve your health, mental acuity and overall happiness).

When all else fails, see a psychiatrist and get some pills, this is the 21st century, no one gives a fuck, we've got more important things to do than lose productivity over dysfunctional hormones.
>>
Your problem isn't that you can't have a relationship, it's that you can't get one. You're 20, in a 'nerdy' field, and you probably don't have that many hobbies. Plus a lack of knowledge of Game and you don't know how to make a good first impression.

Try learning about how to be more attractive and that should help.

this sounds exactly like someone who has no idea what a career in engineering is and has most certainly never seen an engineer work or worked for even a day as an engineer
>>
>>12709245
Not in engineering but I could relate. I suppressed dating in part because I needed to be absolutely sure I graduated college. no one in my family has ever done it.in fact, I don't know a single graduate in my family. I went for econ (respectable I think) and video production (my actual interest) to make myself as marketable as possible.

a secondary reason I was able to stay out of a relationship was because of my parents. they had me in college and neither graduated.

I am well received by women in general and know for a fact that I will find my girl doing what I love. knowing that kept me going and continues to keep me going.

I can't be stopped.
