/adv/, WHY IS IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A JOB?

and not just any job, a fucking ENTRY LEVEL minimum wage one!

I'm starting college soon as a freshman and now need to find my first job. I've already moved in to my campus and have started applying to places like taco bell, libraries, clothing stores, in campus jobs too and it's been days and I haven't heard from any of them. I think I have an OK resume too, atleast one good enough for a low wage slave job! What's wrong?
>>
1. Entry level jobs are actually harder to find because they only want people who are already trained.
2.You have to call THEM you dumb shit.
>>
>>12764175
I HAVE called them, and all of them are like "please fill out an application online". Also, I thought these minimum wage jobs were supposed to be for teenagers with no experience.
>>
You aren't applying enough. I had to apply for 100+ places to get a shit job.

ALSO
>putting down college education
>for a shit job
srsly hope you dont do this
>>
>>12764157 (OP)
Are you in the US?

If so, welcome to an oversaturated job market in a country where there is no emphasis put on R&D or other non-immediate-income higher level pursuits.

You can't find a job because the people that are close to or already graduated are in those jobs - Wondering to themselves what the hell they went to college for when all they got out of it was the ability to get a shit job that will never pay off their loans.

We're a tanking nation, man.
>>
>live in county with nearly 20% unemployment
>have only applied to two jobs
>got them both within a week

Mmm delicious two-job money.
>>
>>12764189
Hahahaha. That was in the old days. Now you have to compete with adults who either lost their jobs when the economy went to shit, or with college graduates who have suddenly realized that there are no jobs available for the shit they went to school for.

Anyways, it's always been about who you know. Every job I've ever held, I've gotten because I knew someone in the company who got my resume bumped to the top of the pile. Social networking is worth so much more than anything else in this world; including ability.
>>
Are you a shy nerd? Shy nerds aren't good for customer service shit jobs. They're looking for personality.
>>
>>12764205
Should I not get a job as a freshman in college..? Not even part time?

>>12764208
>Are you in the US?
Yes. Thing is, I spent the last 4 years (all of high school basically) in another country and there the only work I did was tutoring (since I couldn't get a formal job because no working permit) so I don't even have that formal experience. But all I want is a fucking job, a fucking $7.50/hr job! I see fucking high school freshman working and I can't for the life of me get one...
>>
>>12764234
Nah, I'm not much of a nerd, and I'm pretty confident and have proficient social skills. But obviously the employers can't see that in an online application ;-;
>>
>>12764233
This right here.

I went from shit store level retail to doing the job I was qualified for and wanted - but only because my aunt was the HR director's chiropractor in the company that I now work for.

So go schmooze around.
>>
>>12764235
Like I said. Job market is saturated, and every job posting is mobbed by people much more qualified (or even overqualified) than you.

It's a game of luck and social connection out there.
>>
>>12764248
>>12764233
How do I network? Seeing as how I arrived to the US a month ago after being gone 4 years, I don't have many super close friends left unfortunatley. My closest friend would be a great connection, since his dad owns a restaurant, and I could probably get on that quickly. BUT he lives about 45 minutes away in another city and I'm living downtown without a car.
>>
>>12764235
No, I'm saying if you're trying to get a garbage job at a fast food join you shouldn't include college education because that tells them you'll be gone the second you find something better.
>>
>>12764283
I haven't put I'm in college in my resume, only the education I've completed (high school)
>>
>>12764243
Try to introduce yourself to a manager when you go in. Don't interrupt them if they're busy. They hate that. Think of it this way, you want to be pushy but not.annoying.

Example, counter person says manager is busy. "That's ok. Ill wait for them." Also, don't try this during "rushes". Look for a slow time of day.
>>
>>12764266
You got public transportation, don't you? Once you get the job and save some cash, you can buy a car.
>>
>>12764248
>go schmooze

You just got lucky.
>>
>>12764333
Exactly. In this economy, you need all the luck you can get, and social connections will help with that.
>>
>>12764327
Nah, I live a horrible state for public transportation. The pathetic 'public transportation' only goes as far to another city which is still a good 11 miles away from that town.
>>
>>12764345
Every state is horrible for public transportation.

Fuck this country.
>>
>should I not get a job as a freshman in college..? Not even part time?

If you're planning on getting a worthwhile degree (engineering), you probably won't have the time to do well and hold a job.
>>
>>12764349
Fucking this so much

Oh, and I have a car, it's just without a headlight and half a bumper. ;-; and I have no money to fix it. I'm seriously down to 400 bucks.
>>
>>12764355
Exactly. If you don't need a job, don't bother with it.

How is a shit min wage job flipping burgers going to help you in your career after college?
>>
>>12764355
I plan on STEM yeah, but it's freshman year, I have 12 credit hours this semester, all of them pretty fucking easy. Can I really not handle a part time job with those classes?
>>
>>12764355
This is true. Unfortunately, when you have to pay for college yourself, sometimes it's not possible to not also work. feelsbadman
>>
>>12764363
I have my tuition and housing payed for this entire year, so it's not necessarily that. But I need the experience and pocket change for food, social shit, etc. you know what I mean.
>>
Donate plasma. Boom. Free $200 a month plus bonuses for maybe a total of 4 hours of just laying there clenching your fist while you look on your phone.
>>
>>12764378
You have your tuition and housing paid for and you're bitching about not getting a shit job? Maybe leave those shit jobs to people who have to pay for things themselves.
>>
>>12764381
...wow. Tell me more...
>>
>>12764387
>Maybe leave those shit jobs to people who have to pay for things themselves.

I did, anon. $12k out of my pocket.

Is it wrong to have some pocket change?
>>
>>12764367

What kind of STEM degree is only 12 hours a semester? Computer science?
>>
>>12764392
They aren't in every city, but lots of places have plasma donation centers. With mine, you go twice a week, paid $20 the first trip and $30 the second trip. Then they also give away bonuses all the time. Plus the first time you get $100 for your first two donations. All you have to do is pass a physical, not be on drugs, then you lay down, they stick a needle in your arm, draw a bunch of blood, take the plasma out, then put the blood back in. Takes about half an hour per trip. You might get a little scar if you have them put the needle in the same vane every time though.
>>
>>12764392
>>12764381
There are quite a number of plasma donating places where I live. This isn't too bad...I will definitely look into this.
>>
>>12764416
Hahahahahahah yes, Comp sci, you got me. It's for this semester only. I'll have to take 15 to 18 after this semester.
>>
>>12764157 (OP)
Sorry but unless you're poor as fuck you won't be able to get an on campus job ever. Don't even try.
>>
>>12764417
>not be on drugs
I smoke marijuana often. Is that problematic?
Also, this entire procedure safe in the long run?

>>12764422
But I am poor as fuck...
>>
>>12764428
>I smoke marijuana often

Dude.... just sell drugs.

/thread over
>>
>>12764428
Poor as fuck in the financial aid aspect? You need something called federal work study to be considered. Federal work study is a type of financial aid where you can get employed by the school, then the federal government will pay your wages instead of the school.. So basically the schools will only hire people who get federal work study because they don't have to pay the kids themselves. No federal work study, no on campus job.
>>
>>12764439
The market is over saturated with drug dealers where I live.
>>
>>12764450
LOL

Good ol' USA

Legal job market oversaturated
Black market jobs oversaturated

Time to exchange blowjobs for favors, OP
>>
>>12764428
>I smoke marijuana often. Is that problematic?
I don't smoke, so I'm not sure if that disqualifies you or not. Seeing some of the people who donate though, I'd be surprised if it did.

>Also, this entire procedure safe in the long run?
As far as I know. Just make sure you're hydrated before you do it as plasma is mostly water. As far as getting dehydrated and a scar, I don't think it's detrimental to your health. If anyone else has any other info on that, feel free to chime in.
>>
>>12764428
Stop wasting your money on weed and you won't be so poor, idiot.
>>
>>12764467
Besides that you look like a heroin addict with all the scars
>>
>>12764477
It's just one scar. And mine actually went away after I stopped donating.
>>
>>12764469
This is a problem for two of my brothers

>Waa waaa waaaa I have no money
>Pay up to 50/week for pot

Goddamn son, stop being retarded.
>>
You need to call managers after you've applied, and ask about the status of your application.
You've got to apply to literally every job opportunity, whether you think you're qualified or not (unless it requires some sort of something you don't have, like a CDL or forklift cert or something). Play up your skills and your willingness to work hard to be stellar at whatever job it is.
Have patience. It may take weeks for places to begin calling.
And understand that others are in a better position than you, so you're going to have to wait longer and try harder. I've been working since I was 14, and have had good comments from past employers, and it still took me a little while to find another dead end shitty minimum wage job. I can't wait until I graduate and can at least pretend I'll be good at something else. lol
>>
Once upon a time there was a lot of work to be done. Then we got efficient, which turned a big profit, which encourged taxes, which made the risk for startups higher, which made fewer jobs to be done.

And of course we found out that we could temporarily benefit by giving our money to poor countries and letting them do work for us. That gave us less work to do, and less money to do it with.

So a lot of the jobs that are left require some skill that they don't teach you on the job, and their are more people that want/need them then their are jobs available.

And then to top it off, you're not even allowed to undercut the market. You're willing to work for half minimum wage? sorry, can't. You want to have a trial to show them that you're awesome and they suck? sorry, can't. You want to just keep busy? lets hope you have money to get a hobby, 'cus you can't just do it for the sake of working. It's flat out illegal in lots of cases. Complete bullshit.

Depending on where you are and what's around, you can either dump more applications at more small job places, or you could go to a temp agency. Temp agencies are awesome on one hand because they make it really easy to get a job. They suck because in order to do so they stole all the job prospects from other people putting in normal applications.

well it does mean you guys are all well equipped to drive. I live in the UK and I really regret not learning to drive sooner. I didn't bother because trains and buses go everywhere. and you literally never run out of pavement (sidewalk). I used to walk to work for 40 minutes there and 40 minutes back. Now i'm applying for better jobs and having a car would make things so much easier. I can't get my driving license fast enough.
Also OP, have you applied for any jobs on the campus your heading to. Snap them up before september. Most universities need student staff for coffee shops and student bars and shit like that, they also don't give to much of a shit about experience and they understand things like holidays in semester time and the fact that you might come into work hungover every once in a while. but they're competitive. REALLY competitive. Start applying now. and follow this guys advice >>12764233 meet some of the guys who run the student services and introduce yourself.
good luck faggot
>>
>>12764484
My boyfriend does the same thing and I have literally no fucking sympathy. You're supporting a drug habit with a minimum wage job.
That is exactly why I STOPPED smoking weed. Money drain and you have can apply for jobs that drug test.
>>
>>12764484
I spent 20/2 weeks, sometimes not even that much. It's not that bad. I only vape it twice a week too.
>>
Lazy ass. I found a job right after I graduated from high school. I was getting phone calls for interviews 2 times a day for a week. I had no experience either.
>>
>>12764525
sucking dicks for 10 dollars a pop in a gas station mens room is not what I'd classify as a ''job''
>>
>>12764533
At least I was making money instead of being a whining nigger. Nice try it was a teller at bank.
>>
>>12764508
And yet you stay with him

Hope he at least has a big penis or something.
>>
>>12764525
HOW?! I'm sorry I don't have daddy's connections like you do.
>>
>>12764550
Yeah, he's getting his ass dumped soon if he doesn't get his shit together. He thinks he's pre-med.
>>
>>12764484
That's small time.

A friend of mine went through 8 grand of ice in a few months.
>>
>>12764563
If it makes you feel better I've been to like 10 job interviews in the last four months and only got three shit-tier offers.
>>
>>12764572
>2013
>not using a vaporizer

Why bother with weed at all then?
>>
>>12764572
at least you can say addiction is a factor there

What's the excuse with weed?
>>
>>12764582
It's not physically addictive, but it can be psychologically addictive like anything else. It releases dem sweet neurotransmitters.
I don't know, I didn't have any problem quitting smoking weed. Not at all. But he can't seem to do it.
>>
>>12764593
addictive personality type then

real winrar
>>
>>12764563
No connections either. Just bullshit on your application and resume and there is a job.
>>
>>12764381
many states have banned the sale of blood/plasma for donations because of junkies
>>
>>12764157 (OP)
It takes a while dude.

I got my last job because i had applied for a position there a year earlier, and now they were hiring again.

The summer before that, i applied for 10 jobs or so, got no response until in june, when it turned out i got contacted by all of the employers i had been applying to, proposing interviews.

Just give them some time, keep applying.

And don't accept shit just for the money, because it's just get's worse, and you will end up doing bad and quitting and shit.
>>
I didn't read the thread but you might have some luck looking on craigslist for a job.
>>
>>12764593

Addiction is addiction, it all means the same thing to the brain. There is no difference between "psychological" and "physical" or "spiritual" or whatever.
>>
>>12764613
Hey I don't even have to bullshit. I'm multi-lingual (english, spanish, and mandarin chinese), CPR certified, great with computers and mobile devices, I know Java and html as well and have plenty of Adobe photoshop and MS office suite knowledge as well. I have great people skills and I've had plenty of volunteering and informal work experience (tutoring) as well.

What else do I fucking need?!
>>
>>12764634
You don't detox from marijuana, and that's what I mean by physical addiction.

I didn't real all the posts yet but OP the most important thing you need to do when applying for a job is to make a kick ass cover letter. I had two job interviews this week alone because my cover letters were perfect. It takes a lot longer than just sending off a resume but it is what catches the employer's attention. I think I used the outline model from Virginia tech university (?) I also try to add the company's mission statement in there somewhere.
>>
>>12764157 (OP)

college hasn't started, so the demand is lower, so less seasonal workers.

do you even into employment strategy?
>>
>>12764678
Are you saying that in a month it will be easier?
>>
>>12764679

im saying that when there is a larger population present, demand for EVERYTHING will go up, so supermarkets will need shelf stackers, taco bell will need taco stuffers etc

Not saying it'll be easier, saying there'll be more on offer so, in theory, your odds of securing work are better
>>
>>12764671

Physical withdrawal symptoms are totally disconnected from level of addiction (different for every drug) so the distinction is disingenuous.
>>
>>12764614
Which ones?
>>
OP, I can't help you out, unfortunately. I'm in your predicament. I've been searching for more than a year and have landed nothing. I recently found that there's a store hiring that a friend of mine works at. I'm hoping for the best.
>>
>>12764672
>cover letter
>for entry level jobs
>"So why do you want to work for McDonalds?"
Half of these places don't even ask for a cover letter. They're not those types of jobs.
>>
>>12764751
Exactly, I'm trying to get a job, a shitty, minimum wage job. Are cover letters and references even that important for those kinds of jobs?
>>
>>12764779
Not if they don't ask for them. Hell, it's usually optional to provide a resume.
>>
>>12764157 (OP)

In the UK at least, there about 5 times as many vacancies as there are unemployed people.

So considering that probably less than half of those vacancies are entry level positions, and that there are plenty of people who are employed also applying for those jobs, there just aren't actually enough jobs for everyone to get one.
>>
>>12764450
Bullshit maybe for the simple black market work but I know they still love some skilled new blood.
>>
It's because people who have graduated are working the minimum wage jobs.

I live in Colorado

Every other person deals marijuana, I think I won't have much luck with it.
>>
>>12765013
I wish I lived in colorado
How do I meet drug dealers?
>>
>>12765023
I don't know where you live. But in colorado, even if you dont wanna meet them you will. The thing is, because of all these dispensaries and the demand of people under the age of 21 wanting pot, anyone with a dispensary card can just go out, buy a decent amount and then deal in small amounts often. Not many major big time drug dealers, but so many amateur ones. I have at least 16 numbers on my phone which can hook me up right now if I wanted it. So yeah, like I said, saturated.
>>
I have read the entire thread and I have not seen one reply that basically answers the question "how do you network if you don't actually know anyone or have any friends?"
>>
>>12766595
My boss encouraged us to join my city's professional society (that's relevant to our field), they have a lunch every week. He reimburses us, and it's a great way to meet professionals in the field that are local.
>>
People always complain about this but every job I have ever gotten I've pretty much gotten on the spot. I guess being an innocent-looking girl helps.

Look for a job as a server, they always usually are looking for new people since the turnover rate is high. Do that until you can find a better job. Get weekend hours if you can, the tips are best. Tips get even better if the restaurant has a bar, obviously. Make sure the restaurant has a steady stream of people so you don't end up wasting your time standing around.
