Truth of the matter is, technology is growing at a faster rate than we are, which makes for a whole lot of impersonal contact. You could be friends with 1000 people on Facebook and not know a single one of them. This also allows for someone to make themselves feel important, as the more people following them means the more attention they get. The media is hailing it too, which is what most people out of country see. It's a bit of self-promotion; if we keep feeding into it, these people will still have jobs. Other people though just want a break from their daily work grind and watch things that make them feel better (sports, sitcoms, etc). Personally I fall into the latter, which I would say is a little better than buying into all the media crap, but still isn't making a difference. I can't say though I care about "real things", mainly because it's a very vague topic (you want me buying into the Kony 2012 Propoganda?), but that's mainly because I'm like most people; trying to keep my well-being intact.
