Question about the FAFSA student aid thing.

What if your parents didn't file their taxes the previous year? Can you still get aid? I was told once that you're pretty much screwed, but I remembered seeing an option on the form to check mark if your parents didn't file anything. It gave a field to write down an estimate of your parents income that year.

My parents didn't actually have anything to file. My dad lost his construction business in 2009 and my family lived off funds from selling my grandfathers home, who died in early 2010. It may sound cynical, but if he hadn't of died I don't know what we would have done. Probably just straight up ask him for money.

I really hope I can get aid. I would hate to take out a loan for a community college. I also can't get a Stafford loan without the FAFSA, right? Which means I would have to have a co-signer for any other loan I assume.

    Thanks.

you CAN still get aid. i had something like this when my rents forgot/didnt file taxes. your best bet, go to financial AID now. like RIGHT THE FUCK NOW and tell them yer situation. seriously tell them and they can help you out, find a financial aid advisor. and become their best friend, always stay in contact with them when you have questions like this. and try to stick with ONE financial aid advisor if you can. now go!

How exactly did you get it? Through FAFSA?

Also i should mention, I have a part time job (still in highschool), so I will file taxes next year. If that helps anything.

You'll be ok. You might have some errors at the school level and you'll have to call them up so they can waive the requirements.

    Picture very related.

Fafsa should be done in like January. You won't need to worry about your income on it until the next year.

If your parents didn't file income tax returns then they didn't file income tax returns.

I'm 29 and live with my mom yet can claim independent and no income on the fafsa.

So you guys are saying I should be fine? Just check the boxes that say my parents didn't file anything?

You can't claim in dependency until 21, right?

    Yeah

And if the school tries to tell you they need the tax returns, call them up and tell them that you have none.
