I'm a huge high school burnout, /adv/. I go to school 3 days a week max. I just cannot bring myself to care anymore. I actually have shit health and usually have legitimate reasons for not going, but I also can't deny that I milk them.

Well, I'm 16 and a sophomore in high school. I do fairly well seeing as I had a 4.5 GPA last semester without really trying. My two older brothers are very accomplished, and they are currently getting degrees at respectable schools for engineering and physics. I look up to them, but I also am dismayed at how much time they wasted on parts of their education. I can't exactly pinpoint my issue, but it must be somewhere between stress, my own personal standards and perfectionism, and my lack of giving a fuck. It's so hard for me to even finish these last 4 months of my sophomore year. I just want to drop out since I'm getting my CHSPE in a few months (it's like a GED, in a way), going to community college for a few years, and then transferring to a better university. I feel that my issue is mainly with high school and the high school atmosphere/system, but I am not positive since I've only taken several classes at a college. I just don't enjoy my life at all right now. It's a huge burden, and I just want to start fresh. I don't see why it even matters if I drop out since my community college transcript will practically override my high school one.

I don't even know an exact question to ask... I guess, just... commentary, anyone? Anyone go through something similar?

    >Well, I'm 16
Man up and stick it for a few more fucking months. A 4.5 GPA in high school does not indicate abounding future success. Just like everyone else, you will have to put the effort in. The point where that happens just comes later. If you can't get into the practice of bearing out a few months of casual but irritating practices, you have no hope of dealing with adult life.
    >> Anonymous 03/01/11(Tue)10:45 No.5138441
Basically, you don't even really need a good HS transcript to get into decent schools tbh, I had a sub 3.0 and got into the top pharmacy school in the US.

Just be wary, if you try to slack off now and you fuck up in community college, you're in pretty deep shit.

I can assure you I am far from lazy. It's actually the unrealistic feature of high school that drives me insane. I hate being babied. I just don't see the point in bearing it just to prove I can since I have other shit to deal with now anyway, like a fucking job. I don't see the point in staying just to stay. I am well aware I can't be lazy as an "adult," but I also am not worried about that. I know it may seem like that from my post, but I left out a lot of other aspects of my personality and my life.

    >>5138441

I know you don't need a good transcript anyway, but most universities don't accept a student immediately if they only have a diploma equivalent. I understand that, but my schedule was about as hectic as it is now over summer with community college classes, and I did so much better and was so much happier there.

    >> Anonymous 03/01/11(Tue)11:16 No.5138607
You're not screwed up, kid, you just haven't found your calling. In order to do this you'll need to to some hard thinking, soul searching, and you'll have to go and try everything.

You sound like you need a gap year pretty hard.
    >> Anonymous 03/01/11(Tue)11:18 No.5138612
Oh, and don't think that community college is much of a step up. It's full of people who want to hang on to high school for a few more years.

Ah I wish, if my mom would allow it... I definitely could use a break.

    >>5138612

Haha, I understand that, but at least I have been there and the professors, time, and work has been much better for me.

Fight hard for it, man. Find some quasi educational program that will take you overseas or something. You need perspective, young man, and badly.

    What are your passions?

Well, I like video games, violin, and fiber arts. I wouldn't mind joining Peace Corps for a while. I just need something to get me out of this looming sense of depression meanwhile.

I know people who've dropped out of university three months shy of a degree and both regretted it and celebrated it, but I've never met anyone who was glad they dropped high school.

Man up and finish what you started, even if it was somebody else's idea.

I've analyzed the procedure and the results, and I would only gain anything from finishing it by feeling accomplished that I finished it. As I've said, my college transcript would override it.

Concentrate on your social education as well as your academic education as you finish high school, you'll thank yourself down the road. Find the good parties, break a few rules, have some underage fun while you're still underage. Do you really want to leave high school without any crazy sex/drugs/drinking/prank stories?

    Think 'bout it.

    Hey op,

I -hated- high school. I couldn't stand the people, I was bored, I felt very apathetic to everything in my life while I was there, and I just didn't see the point. I was so stressed and bothered by school that it drove me to depression.

I'm not 27, in grad school, and decently happy with my life. What I've seen in my life and those I know is that if you hated high school, but like learning/are ambition, etc...then you will love college. And those who loved high school for all the bullshit reasons like parties, being social, etc...hate college.

Choose a major you are interested in, and you will excel. Keep in mind though, the first 2 years of college will be the hardest. You will have to do the mundane 'basics' that everyone has to.. but after that you will enjoy college. But even those first 2 years are so different than high school that you might enjoy it. There aren't as many social politics or mundane, useless things assigned like in hs.

Also, as cliche as it sounds.... I wish more than anything I could go back to being 17. It's funny to think abou because I was so miserable and couldn't wait to 'grow up' when I was that age. Time really does go by fast.. Just remember that this time in your life will pass and things will get better.

    >>5138810

Thank you. : ) I hope I will turn out the same way. I really do enjoy learning, but that barely happens at high school with my adversarial teachers. I'm pretty sure I'll be going to community college for the first two years or else I will not be going into a better university at all since they do not accept just diploma equivalents. I don't mind though. It will be cheaper and easier for me, and my community college professors are quite good since they're mostly just retiring professors that don't want to teach at universities but still have a passion for teaching.

I'm glad you're happy with your life, and I hope my outcome is similar.
    >> Anonymous 03/01/11(Tue)12:12 No.5138872
I've was taken out of the public education system and home schooled since 4th grade or so. My mom (teacher) became ill in my first year of 9th grade, so we decided to drop it for a while. Ended up just getting a CHSPE instead and working.

Right now, I am attending a community college, and will transfer once I'm finished. However, I still wish that I attended a regular public high school, just for the experience of it all.. The only reason I actually started working, was because I was just so bored and I had so much free time.. On the other hand, college work is really quite easy for me, and I am sort of glad I got my CHSPE and attended college earlier than other students. I'm finishing up my second year of community college, and some of my friends still have not graduate high school yet!

If you have your schedule lined up & know your college level material already, then go for it. If you're still not 100% sure what you will do, figure that out first.

I rarely connect with people in person anyway. I come across as someone with an entirely different personality: superficial, girly, etc. That is not how I really am since I hate drama, parties, and huge gatherings. I enjoy doing shit with just a few friends that I trust and who truly know how I already act. I prefer to be alone anyway.
