I actually didn't find myself needing a hoplite all that badly in the main game, though having some of the anti-element skills did make certain bosses a lot easier. If you need the defense, that looks like a fairly solid setup, though.

I asked in the last thread but it died. Anyway:
[front]: Arbalist (loving front mortar), Gladiator
    [back]: monk, prince, ninja
Ideas for subclasses on the front row? Monk will go prince for passive healing, prince will probably go in the front row as gladiator sub, ninja will go zodiac for dark ether. Don't know how to maximise my main source of damage with the front two. They're okay for now, but I'm worried if I don't get something sorted, my damage will drop off later. Will consider retiring gladiator into shogun. Thanks guys, you're all great people.

Isn't it needed to go into front motar? If you aren't planning on using it then don't bother with it either way.

    >>2131876
Sub arbalist with gladiator. Charge and front mortar should be enough damage and with double action and wild swings involved, you can do more damage. As for gladiator, go with buccaneer for swashbuckling or ninja for evasion and ko move. Glad/bucc for more damage with normal moves, or glad/ninja for instant ko reg enemies or stun bosses occasionally.

I wouldn't worry too much about damage because I think the arbalist will do enough damage and having the gladiator support will be just fine. Post-game, you might have to try something else.

The subclass is up in the air, honestly. /W gets you Primal Drums which is basically the offensive sub route here. /N gets you Bunshin for the rare times you want a double Hoplite (which, honestly, isn't that common in the post-game) and access to Kagenui for Kraken (which you can ignore with enough offense anyway). Though, yeah, you can cover the binds still with /W so it's mostly Bunshin out of /Ninja but I feel like mentioning Kagenui.

My only complaint about class of heroes is that the bosses are either "Use your ultimate move to kill them instantly, or die in one shot to each of their attacks while all your regular swings miss"

Also, killed Overlord on EO2 last night. Forgot to go in with any force skills, but honestly I didn't need it. The only death was my gunner who had the bad luck of using a warmighted ricochet on the same turn he used counter.

Following that, proceeded to trash golem in four turns, and wyvern in six turns. I actually thought wyvern would be hard - I went into the fight thinking 'well, let's see how badly I die' and next thing I know he was dead and I've got the conditional drop.

It probably helps that Cuffs landed on wyvern on the first turn, and shortly after that I hit him with dominate, but still. Golem buffed himself on the first turn, got hit with erase on the second so his punch didn't even kill my Hexer, and then was terrified on the third turn.

I'm going to miss this team in EO4.

He's definitely not dead weight. Axe is for single enemy damage but is surclassed by ronin and survivalist, sword is for multiple enemy dmg (allslash is brutal but requires points on useless skills). You could also use the elemental chases if you have an Alchemist in the party.

It depends a lot on how are you familiar with old school dungeon crawlers like Wizardry and how willing you're to learn and/or exploit the game mechanics, going thorugh the post game dungeons.

Probably not less than 40+ hours.

It's considered a non-offensive skill when used (so no Trickster or Double Action activation) it uses the normal hit formulas for the hits (so it adds elemental slots damage) but it won't activate passive skills like swashbuckling.

I'm on the 7th floor right now. Just taking my time really. Getting materials for equipment...

My party is level 22 now. I have a level 9 zodiac who was previously level 11 (she had combat study 5 ranked. ) I'll use her when I need a drop that requires non-physical attacks to get like hermit or something. I'll grind her if I need more elements on my team.

I still have a level 11 wildling, ninja, farmer and a buccaneer with combat study. Maybe i should max it out since they lose all their points when they rest anyway.

And I have a 5 person farmer team who have just 1 point in combat study ( I dont plan on resting to remove it)

They are on their way to learning Safe Stroll. They have pretty good stuff on them incase of ambush and they have the stalk cutter which actually makes certain monsters easier to kill.

If you ever need an elemental conditional it shouldn't be a problem as long as you're keeping up with your sea quests. The elemental limit scrolls you get from those do a lot of damage, if a conditional is ever required.
Though Zodiac/Arbalist is good for elemental attacks as well, since the arbalist multi-hit elemental skills take less skill points to get to, and count as blunt/element dual types for those enemies that resist the element you have to kill it with.
    >> Anonymous 03/20/12(Tue)18:59 No.2169046
    >>2168792

But aren't there certain enemies that you have to kill without using physical attacks of any kind or just status ailments? Like the Great Anaconda or Great Hermit? I tried using ailments but it's kind of slow. And I know you don't get those elemental scrolls till later and I'd rather get the drop sooner than later when the item it makes could still be of use possibly.

I have just 1 point in my barrages but for now im focusing on Cloudbuster.

Either way I'm going to have a Zodiac in reserve just in case.

    >>2169046

    >But aren't there certain enemies that you have to kill without using physical attacks.....

The key term here is "kill with".

You can attack a Great Anaconda with physical attacks until it has a sliver of health, then kill it with a non physical attack, and you can get a chance at it's conditional.

For ailment monsters, just wail them down and then apply the status required.

Case in point, if it wasn't like this, it would be impossible to get insta kill conditionals like Helion, since the insta kill moves require them being at less than half health to actually work (or was it 51% at max Climax?)
    >> Anonymous 03/20/12(Tue)19:06 No.2169423
    >>2169228

oh. i worded that weird. My party set-up relies in physical attacks so I wouldn't be able to get those rare drops because even if I use a barrage it still counts as part physical.

Thats why I got my Zodiac.

I can get elemental drops alright though.
    >> Anonymous 03/20/12(Tue)19:35 No.2170995
Is it even worth getting conditionals from regular enemies anyway? I know some quests require them and you can just ask the person at the bar for some hints for some monsters, but I never bothered with them until I got lucky hammer or whatever the limit is and went back to fill the item compendium.

Grind in safer areas a little bit, I think there are spots you flat out won't see a lynx.

A Hoplite line guard up front should solve your problem as well for the most part, along with a Monk/prince(ss)/buttton of medica. Just grind like a mother fucker and soon Lynxes won't oneshot you. Also, fair warning, day/night cycle is something you should pay attention to on the next floor or so.

Finally at Floor 25 in EO3, my team is in 70-71.

Gotta go get the Blue and Gold Dragon now while farming for books and XP I suppose. Party is Hoplite/Ninja, Princess/Monk, Zodiac/Ninja, Monk/Princess, Arbalist/Gladiator.

At this stage in the game should I really bother with the Arbalist Barrages? I usually use Cloudbuster/Charge during farming, but I'm thinking of getting one for times when I need more spontaneous AoE like with the triple pumpkin groups on Floor 25.

It doesn't look very easy early on bro. You may want to slap prince(ss) into the back row, and ditch the wildling for now- they seem cool, but you really shouldn't bother with them unless you have a good grasp on how the game goes. A hoplite could save you loads of trouble. Monk could probably work in front row if you were speccing for fists and shit, but I'd rather slap them in back row as well since lolheals, in which case I would ditch the prince(ss) for a Zodiac for the early damages and basically forcing you to learn TP management... or abuse Dark Ether like a dirty whore. You could switch between monk and prince(ss) easily though, it doesn't really matter which one you take depending on what you find you need.

I would personally suggest you take the most boring yet effective 5man squad until the end of the second stratum, THEN decide on what you want your main squad to be. By that point of the game all things are available to you, and you have a firm grasp on what to do. Hoplite is excellent to send with grinding squads- that way you keep the grindees alive while boosting someone who is solid in about any party setup as far as I can tell. Also, Farmer has a means of boosting XP gain for a party, so one of those could help too, alongside resource gathering.

Guides are your friend bro. Those could help you out if you need it. Also, just saying, do sea quests when you can. They are awesome. You will notice a relation between sea quests and inn cost, by the way... I won't spoil it for you but it's pretty obvious once you try it out.

Once again thanks for the advice. I was thinking of dropping the wildling anyways just because she doesn't seem useful and her summons don't do much besides the bind.
So the prince and monk roles overlap a lot? If that's the case I'll drop the monk and grind the princess so I can get her heal skills instead of the buffs.

    EO1 or 2? I'll assume 2.

You'll want to build Whips so you can get Ecstasy and Climax, the big DD skills. Get your binds to upper levels if you can as well. If you want to risk it, you can level up Swords so you also have access to Bait/Magibait, which act like powerful counterattacks whenever the row your DH is in gets hit. You'll have to burn a turn to use it though, and if no enemies attack the line she's in, you'll have effectively wasted TP and an attack round. Antisick and Antibind are also pretty good.

I've never experimented with the utility of a Sword DH, but Ecstasy and Climax are stupid powerful in EO2. Unlock a Dominator and pretend she's going "Oh ho ho" every time you hit "Dominate."
    >> Anonymous 03/21/12(Wed)02:05 No.2189668
    >>2188938
For your groups of enemies problem, you have other class options:

All of Hexer's status ailments target all enemies on screen, so you can get Poison for straight up damage or Torpor to give the rest of your party crowd control and a slight damage bonus for hitting asleep enemies.

Gunners have 2 moves: Wildshot, which fires a single shot at each enemy; and RIcochet, which is a 3-5 shot volley (at max level) which randomly hits targets.

Ronin, should you spec Overhead, has a fire-based AOE slash as well as access to Midareba, a Richocet-type move that targets a specific mob.

Alchemists also have AOE nukes, I think.
    >> Anonymous 03/21/12(Wed)02:13 No.2189890
    >>2189447
Also in my experience Magibait isn't really a crucial skill so you can dump those spare 5 points in LUC Up or something. Bind stick rates can get fickle even at max level.

In the first game, retiring at 70 would net you like 6 or so extra points, and stats up to the new character based on the retired character.

You would start at level one after retiring.

It was an overall bad process in the first game, in the second game it became sort of ok, but wasn't as good as in the third.

I don't actually have any attack-all-enemy skills, and it hasn't been a problem, as my Hexer has disable-all-enemy skills (mostly Torpor, though I used Poison for the first three stratums)

Basically you want Climax maxed so that you can instantly kill any FOE and a couple of bosses, once they reach 55% hp or lower.

Ecstasy does 750% damage or so to a fully bound enemy, but you can hold off on that until you unlock the 'Dominator' whip in stratum 4. It has 300% force generation so you'll be able to use dominate FAR more often, making Ecstasy actually worth it. Keep in mind it makes binds drop much faster when used.

Pick ONE of Cuffs/Shackles/Gag for general use. I went with cuffs because I find in EO2 arm binds are the most useful, to cut enemy attack, and because there aren't a lot of magic using enemies.

Viper can be useful to have a cheap attack with a chance of poisoning, or for harpuia's conditional if you like.

STR Up is quite important, even though it's only a 10 point str boost you'd be amazed how much of a difference it makes. I suggest this for EVERY melee character, especially at low levels when you don't have the tp pool for maxed skills to be very viable - it can drastically increase the damage output of your regular attacks.

Antibind and Antisick are good too - whole party just get confused/bound/etc? It's likely your DH evaded that thanks to the bonus resistance, so throw around a Therica BX/AX and you're safe! (Especially because, with whips, they're HILARIOUSLY fast)

    (continued, field too long)

HP Up isn't bad, it helps with a DH's lower vitality when compared to protectors/lands/warmagi/etc. TP Up can help with their low-ish tec pool as well.

I never used the baits much. They're good on some enemies, especially those with multi-hit attacks, but you're risking your turn for a chance at something whereas I usually found it more useful to just beat the crap out of and/or disable things outright.

I am under the impression EOIV happens before EOIII.
EO had the discovery of Shinjuku and its technologies, after that in EOII we had Gunners usoing that technology, EOIII had even more advanced tools and classes (super high tech ballista, guns, yggdroids...) and EOIV looks even more archaich than EO in terms of classes (I only say that because Rune Master looks a lot more magic than Alchemist(the others look pretty similar(Sniper's bow looks quite complex, though))).

It's taunting me. I know where the area is that gives the shortcut so I don't have to go through the maze all over again, but I can't get there. I get to the other three places just fine, but I can't get to the one place I want to go. Even with the floor falling bs on the previous floor didn't give me this much trouble.

Gladiator for Buccaneer so you can Charge-Chase. Shit's strong.

For Arbalist, you could try Gladiator also for Charging antics. You can also do Shogun (when you unlock it) for back-row WarMight fun. As for your prince, I don't know. If he's in your back row, you could do Arbalist to allow him to do more damage with bowguns, but that's pretty general advice.

Try to escape, fail, then there's another right behind you and it's a neverending sequence of being blindsided until you die. They frustrated me so much I went to F11 to beat up 9 of them for a quest. I only got second place though.

For Pop Flares, it has situational usefulness depending on your party. I have a Ninja/Gladiator in my back row with Nine Smashes and I couldn't live without that move, but without a Gladiator it's not really good. Elemental barrages aren't that bad, I usually put a point into one of them but they're not especially useful. Double Action is kinda unreliable but it's helped me in a bind quite a few times, and I like Heavy Shot since it costs half as much as Armor Piercer but still does decent damage. Then again, I keep a back row Arbalist so I'm not putting Front Mortar to good use even though it seems like an amazing ability.

I'm quite enjoying it now that I've gone back to it.
It's easier to have a general-purpose team of cheapasses. You have to have very specific strategies in III and I found it annoying to have to re-gear / rest everyone for each boss I fought.

Alright so I'm running out of skills to invest in for my Y/B build

    Yggdroid
    Data mining-10
    Infravision-10
    Virus Scanner-9
    Overheat-5

    Bucc
    Rapier Mast-10
    Gun Mast-8
    Swashbuckling-10
    Lady Luck-10

    HPup-1

I'm thinking the only thing left to invest in would be hanging or lights out. The rest of my team isn't' set up to work with any of the chase skills. The only thing with the other skills is I would need to invest in sleep mode and a bind skill first to make sure i'm not using up all my tp.

    Any advice?

Maxing Play Possum and Brave Heart takes 26 skill points, you'll probably not want to invest in Persistence, at least no until you're done with your Arbalist skills, after that it's a very good skill to have.
Leaving the Barrages at level 5 is a good idea but their usefulness depends heavily on your party, I'd give it some thought before leveling them.

It's a pain in the ass. You need three Curse Vines from flygourds, which only drop when fully bound. Gourds take no damage from anything other than volt/ice, so bring a hexer with dampen, or strong skills of those elements. The only GOOD way to do it is to hit the gourd with dominate and then kill it the next turn, so hurt it a lot before domination. I suggest saving at the geomagnetic pole once you build the force necessary in case you mess up.

    >They are not better than a protector

Late game, early game they are much more useful, they are much stronger than a protector early on, much more health too, can actively take hits for everyone else, so it reduces the targets needing healing to only him for the most part (it's not wise to have him block ALL hits, even early on).

They can heal themselves too on a pinch, and most of the time they get their definitive equipment early in the stratums.

Later game they fall off due to the nature of the game, monsters tend to hit deadly against one target alone, so if you combine that with an AOE, you get a pretty much dead beast every turn due to taking several hits he shouldn't have.

    >>2270687

Ronins are great for upfront damage, though personally I've always liked dark hunters for the disabling and crazy speed with a high status/bind resist. They get WAY better once you unlock the Dominator whip though. Up until that point they're just okay, but once you have 300% bonus force generation and can fire off Dominate nearly every time you run into a foe/boss they get scary.

Ronins get less squishy if you max both of their evasion skills. They'll dodge a lot of the things that get thrown at them.

How do I grind effectively now? All the stuff gives so few EP...

Just keep walking, next floor has stupdly weak FOE, that you can grind for exp, and you'll get an infinite recovery point just before that.

I think the shorter intro is more appropriate, personally. Longer intro is too generic anime-y for my tastes.

Grinding new recruits at Claret Hollows is so fun~
    ... and strange.

I like combat study. Makes doing that easier.

But it wasn't in 1, that was 3 only.

I wish EO I had combat study, that way I wouldn't spend an eternity grinding a Protector to beat Wyrm because my lv 40 still dies when it uses its tail.

Yeah that's what I did too. Fought stuff for force on the last floor of stratum 3, then saved at the geo pole, then went to grab me some vines.

You don't unlock Axcelas until stratum 5. If you get that whip you won't NEED them for your hunter, though. You'll get like 20+ force a battle if you kill something, and its attack power is crazy.

I did that, and I haven't looked back. They synergize amazingly well with hexers, which I have, and warmight helps a lot with my protector/dark hunter/gunner doing damage. Dark hunter has maxed antisick so she can just pop a therica BX if something bad happens.

Nah. Maxed it's a flat 41% boost to enemy drops regardless of who gets the kill.
Meaning if an item had a 10% drop rate it now has a 51% drop rate. Expect your pack to fill up fast.

Funny, Chaser skills don't trigger Curse damage in EO I, is it like this for EO II and III as well?

I dunno about 2, but in 3 it does.
