Goddamn it, I miss this game. It was my first and favorite MMORPG. I know people like to point out the flaws, but the amazing detail put into every facet of the game world made it a real pleasure to play and incredibly addicting. The graphics, the environments, the music. Oh, the music...

I was a 75 RDM / 37 NIN taru. Played from 2004 to around 2007. I'd like to hear from other FFXI-bros of the past glory days, as well as current and more recent players.

Loved the game, Promathia was the best plotline, even if removing the level cap made bosses too easy.

I wish I could have finished going through the other expansions though. The guys I was doing WoTG with switched to XIV of all things and I ended up not renewing my sub. Been dry 9 months or so now.

What a coincidence, I was just thinking about this game. I had quit a couple months back because of friends leaving, but I've got the itch again.

Been playing since US launch, but I was always too casual to really do much before SE started lifting level caps. Pic related, my second time ever in Lufaise.

AF2 is the feet part of AF quests, Relic armor is Relic armor. But yeah you're right I think he posted Relic, not AF. It'd take a PLD to tell you since their shit all looks identical.

We were reminiscing about FFXI the other day in the GW2 thread. As much as I am looking forward to GW2 as a game, I'm still convinced it'll be an MMORPG I can call home like I did for FFXI. The PvE environment had newbs clinging onto anyone that even remotely knew what they were doing, GW2's PvE enviroment is happy happy casual funtimes that girlgamers can complete and feel good about.

Because dungeon runs that press beta people couldn't complete isn't proof enough that the game will have some difficult aspects. There are some things in GW2 that seem stupidly simple, but saying the whole game is going to be like that is a bit of a stretch.

Well said, they didn't have any fucking idea what GW2 was even, judging by how they played it, and it doesn't speak at all, to GW2's easymodo PvE, just because some dullards died.

Explorable and maybe some big events might be tough, but everything in the open world scales to be manageable by whoever encounters them, even solo.

GW2 will not have the same harsh world environment, no. But it does have it's own charms

    Two words

    Blue Mage.

I loved how they actually gave the class a story, hell, I loved all of Al Zahbi, the story really picked up for me in those new areas, but Blue Mage was the first class to actually click with me. The challenge in grinding spells, the power that accompanies obtaining them... It's a lot more satisfying to me than any other class where my level rises and I just get new abilities the old fashioned way.

I can't speak for COR but DNC was an amazing job. They became among the greatest jobs to level because not only were they fun as a main job but they carried over some of their main perks as a simple subjob.
They could heal using TP, they eventually became able to dual-wield like ninjas, they had stackable debuffs and they were able to activate sneak/invis without ANY use of resources with a cooldown which was shorter than the effect lasts. They still did decent damage while gathering TP was their main priority. Amazing amount of things crammed into a subjob.
Fantastic subjob for soloing, getting through sneakable quests and and a good number of party circumstances.

My story went from the 360 beta in 2005 until 2011. Paladin was my main focus. Got up to 75 or 76. I felt abyssea ruined it. To me it looked like a desperate cash-in because the FFXI team probably thought they'd lose a fair chunk of playerbase to FFXIV. The main selling point of the desperate cash-in being that it gave so much better rewards that it made doing anything else that you used to know and love seem like a waste of time. Even with the doubled EXP.

Blue Mage was totally the best, I loved the style, and customization and how you had to go on so many honest to god adventures just to get all your spells.

Unfortunately there were so many half-assed, DD only BLUs that gave the job a bad reputation in endgame shells.

I HAD TANKING GEAR AND MERITS DAMMIT LET ME TANK.
    >> Anonymous 03/18/12(Sun)18:25 No.2042675
    >>2039513
Probably my number 1 reason for not playing 14 is that there is no equivalent to Blue Mage.

Collecting spells was just an amazing adventure in and of itself, I could look through my entire spell list and remember the circumstances of getting that spell entirely.
    >> Anonymous 03/18/12(Sun)18:26 No.2042772
Uhh, I actually really like everything added except SCH. Is it just because I am a buttmad bitter ex-career RDM? Maybe that's part of it. They were becoming META AS FUCK when I quit, and became even more so afterwards. Also of course there is a lot of controversy surrounding Ninja and evasion tank meta, however I won't say I wish it never happened because Warrior was never viable and PLD/WAR was just not quite enough, before everything was explored by players and patched properly by devs (tee hee).

ToAU gave us COR, BLU, PUP. This was strange because these are all "weird" Jobs, they don't fit into the obvious (Holy Trinity-esque) meta that actually really became defined in ToAU. Arguably COR comes out best because of the amazing pocket roles in has in HNM, all BLUs would argue they have a wide variety of pocket roles, so fuck everyone else - sorry guys where is your top tier refresh? lolpup aside, pup worked. fuck, in certain situations, pup were op. but then so is bst but no one cares about bst either. there you go pups, i just grouped you with the legendary bst, you can feel good now.

    >>2042772
Oh, cry me a river Mr. entitled Red Mage. I got so sick of whining RDM on the forums. Yes, SCH is filling the role that you guys were originally supposed to fill, but you're still the best soloists and most in-demand job in the entire game, suck it up.

ToAU jobs are my three favorite jobs in the game by far. I love how they required so much extra effort and had weird applications outside the usual cookie-cutter strategies. However they all required a metric fuckton of money to gear properly and were far too easy to half-ass, so people kind of got a bad impression from them.

PUP was so weird, I honestly feel like Square completely forgot about that job, they just did their own little experiments and learned how to break the system to perform miracles.

aw man you really tore into me there. it gets lonely being this fabulous.

and yeah, COR was the only class that made me want another 75 that was not RDM. A whilst I was in the swing of leveling past 37 I did NIN and BLM. Thank god BLM cost next to nothing because I had nothing. Maybe they should have removed ninja tools and given them MP or something, I don't know. Some early ele nin stuff was interesting but nobody bothered with it since ninja became tank and not some weird captain planet DD, and it already cost the earth.

If anyone actually played the game they would know the game is bad right from the start.

Forced grouping so there was no way you could do everything without a huge ass 17 man group.
Having to level X job to do Y event is retarded.
Slow ass combat that has a .05 just like TOR!
16 jobs that were more or less redundant and severed no purpose other than for voidwatch to proc shit.
Leveling was fucking slow like you had to devote the entire day just to get a level which turns off alot of casual players.
FFXI is on consoles so the game already became more shit.

Such a great game. So many great memories. My FFXI run lasted about 3 solid years and then off an on for another 5 or so. Kinda sad but it was one of the better periods of my life. Made some great freinds and shared some epic experiences. This was all back when the game was more difficult though. I recently got into it again (last year) after the ultimate collection got released on steam. It's largely the same game, plus there's a ton of great new content, but it's lacking the magic that it had back when the game was new and more group oriented. It's still group oriented but back in the day the groups would be 12-18 people strong to (attempt to) accomplish regular missions.

Was really hoping the SE was going to revive all that with FFXIV... but we all know what happened there.
