People over 21, why do you cosplay? Doesn't it lose its appeal once you hit a certain age?
>>
No. I've finally got disposable income now that I'm in my 20's. I've also grown more patient and have better skills than I did when I was a teen.
I finally have the means to create the costumes that used to make me drool with jealousy as a kid
>>
>>6800292
This.

And being an engineering student, I get access to all sorts of goodies that would set me back thousands to get on my own. Disposable income is still a problem, but now I have the know how and experience to be put in better use.
>>
I do it for fun. Im 23 so i still look moderately young but i do know that eventually my age will begin to show but I believe I'll slowly start to lose the interest in dressing up as my favorite characters as my mentality may begin to change as well.
>>
Last time I went to a con, it donned on me that "im too old for this shit", and spent most of the time in the bar drinking with friends. At this point I just go to hang out with people, but it has very little to do with cosplaying and anime.

When I see lolitas over the age of 20 I gag.
>>
>>6800277 (OP)
Fortunately, life continues after 21, and it ideally comes with more money, resources, and the freedom to do what you want.
>>
Fun things are fun.
>>
I doubt I'll ever get bored of it. 23 atm.

But I don't just do the normal kind, I do that kigurumi anime mask full body stuff too (quality stuff, not wyu level crap). Having lot's of disposable income for this kind of stuff is awesome.
>>
As long as you dress appropriately and still enjoy the con for being what it is, its still fun. Instead of dressing up as a magical girl, move on to some older characters, it may not be cute, but it'll sure as hell look alot better than anything those kids will buy. I didn't even start cosplaying til i was 18, and due to not being a weaboo I know the limits of what can and can't be done with certain body types. now since im older i can pull off older cosplays without looking like an idiot.
>>6800339
why'd you even go to the con then?
>>
Cause it's my con and I can cos if I want to. You would cos too if you went to one too.
>>
Me getting older has only changed one thing regarding my life: I now have money and the resources to do all the shit I wanted to do when I was younger.
>>
31 here. Not bored of it at all. Just no room to make the crazy stuff I want to, and I'd like to get to my weight loss goals first so I wear Lolita for the moment.

Life does go on once you reach adulthood, and in reality, other than living up to responsibilities and getting a little more maturity as you go along, and... change of tastes, things don't really change for the most part.
>>
>>6800339
>browsing /cgl/
>I-it's n-not like I like your nerd conventions, I just go for the hotel bar!

Fuck you. I had to attend a con with a bitch like this once, she was the most immature out of all of us.
>>
I think I'll feel "too old" to cosplay, when I have a kid.

But then, I'll just dress up my kid into adorable things.
>>
>>6800415
this is true of everything, not just cosplaying.

I honestly can't wait until I'm elderly so I can cosplay Cologne.
>>
Sometimes I feel that way. I mostly go for friends now, but sometimes I'm put into panels and whatnot which is also fun.

My biggest fear is that I'll burn out of it before all my other friends do so I won't get to see them anymore.
>>
Used to do it a fair amount between 16-18, mainly VG characters and then I outgrew it and started to find it weird. My missus loves to cosplay however so I've started to slowly get back into it and it adds a lot more fun to cons to be honest. Don't think I'd ever want to do it away from a con though, still weirds me out a tad.
>>
Fuck, I'm about to be 24 next Sunday and I feel like I cna cosplay still as long as I stick with my age range.

Also, I've been told when I shave my beard or have a goattee, I look about 19-20 so maybe I could do some late teens cosplay but fuck it.

I guess I will feel old when I have kids.
>>
>>6800339
>it donned on me
>>
tbh, i only cosplay so other people dont recognize me.

Don't you feel weird being 24 in a con with 14 year old, who clearly are enjoying themselves more than you?
>>
I'm 30 now, and yes it has lost a lot of appeal. I've broadened my horizons and started going to all different sorts of conventions and feel a lot more comfortable in normal clothing than I ever did in cosplay.

I'll cosplay every now and again, but I'm talking maybe one a year, if that.
>>
>>6800277 (OP)
i look 16 so i figure it's okay
>>
I think cosplaying in my twenties have been the best years of my life. My cosplays from 13-19 just felt so meaningless. It's funny because I used to have a lot more of a disposable income because my parents were married up until I left for college. Because of that I've become more resourceful and the hard work put into things feel more important to me.
>>
>>6800610
Im sorry.
>>
>>6800572
I remember going to cons when I was 14. They are much better and way more fun now that I'm in my late 20s.
>>
>>6800637
That might be because you can drink now.
>>
Im 27 and didn't really start cosplaying till about 2 years ago. I usually try to cosplay older characters like Captain Harlock so it doesn't really bother me. Almost everything else Ive ever done is full body with a helmet.

Ive been in a nasty car accident though and my back kills me when doing some full suited armor cosplays. Makes me feel like an old man lol.

My GF complains alot because 19 year old girls in bikinis get more attention that she does. Not sure why people are into the hobby at all if they are gonna act like that.
>>
>>6800681
Is your GF good when she sets out on a cosplay ?

>not sure why cosplayers want attention
Wrong board.
>>
>>6800688
Decent I guess. Seemed to have fun anyway until recently. She does stuff I really only have a marginal interest in. MLP, Vocaloid that kinda thing.

>>6800690
I understand the attention part. Like i said I do alot of really big crazy costumes myself. I just get tired of hearing chicks complain about sex appeal and age and all that shit. If your that worried about getting attention and your not young or ridiculously hot just make a really cool complicated costume or prop. Those get plenty of attention too and are more satisfying imo.
>>
NO BECAUSE NOW I HAVE MONEY
>>
I've wanted to go to a con for years, but I don't want to go unless I can find a fitting cosplay, and I'm short, fat and have an amazing beard... And all /co/, /a/, and /v/ characters with beards that I like are tall. I can't stand to destroy character integrity.
>>
The only thing that really has changed about cons for me is that as I get older the obnoxious teenage kids get more and more annoying. My local con used to be the most fun thing in my whole year, but then as I started running panels and making better cosplays the whole place just became a giant grating mass of yellow, grey and orange nails on a chalkboard incarnate.

I have found some pretty awesome friends among hardcore cosplayers and always have people to see or something to check out. Even though a lot of Western franchises have taken over the scene that makes meeting up with people who still care about anime is even more awesome.
>>
>>6800339
Over 20? That's ridiculous that you think that's too old.
I've seen some 25 years old+ lolitas that were still completely gorgeous.
>>
Because when I hit 40 ill be able to cosplay sexy Ojii-sans
>>
>>6800572
No, given I hang out with people my age and I do enjoy it. Granted, I've only just going to conventions at age 20.
>>
>>6800277 (OP)
All good cosplayers are older, cause people don't have much money when they're younger.
>>
>>6800853
>I've seen some 25 years old+ lolitas that were still completely gorgeous.

I guess it shows the average age of this board/cons but damn, people generally don't start looking like shit until 35+. This "you're old when you're past 18, 25 is ancient" shit is toxic.
>>
>>6800572
>Hanging out with 14 year olds at any time for any reason
>>
>>6800948
I know a group of legitimately rich (like they live in fucking mansions and go to a private high school where one year of tuition costs more than my entire bachelor's degree, not counting the charity donations their parents have to give to look good for the other parents) cosplayers. What do they do? Hamsteak and shitty eBay cosplays. Fuck's sake if I had that kind of money I'd have GSTQ and Volpin on speed dial.
>>
for me, a lot of the appeal is not so much in the getting dressed up, or even going to conventions anymore. It's more about the building and construction of costumes, props and other things. i love seeing how people take fiction and try and translate it into a reality in some form. sometimes its super successful and awe inspiring. other times its a hilarious mess, but it's always entertaining.

but then again i also love the bonus footage behind any film that shows the behind the scenes stuff, like set construction, prosthetic work, or prop design.
>>
>>6800853
Anyone over 20 probably now has the money and the job to even afford lolita, myself included.

As far as cosplay goes, I've developed the mentality that if I don't get a cosplay done for a con in time, it's not the end of the world. Idk not finishing a cosplay used to drive me crazy when I was younger. It's also nice that I have the patience to put a lot of work into just one new costume if I feel like. The process has become much more relaxing for me.
>>
>>6800967
I don't think you understand escapism
>>
>>6801036
Nah, they regularly complain about how they wish they could do more complex cosplays but they shy away from hiring commissioners. They also complain about not knowing how to sew, and yet one of them has had a professional-grade sewing room installed in her place. I don't understand why they don't just get lessons. They could hire someone very skilled to tutor them as a group.

I'm 26.

My group of friends (male and female) go to see people we usually would only see at conventions. And outside of conventions it is more difficult to find the time as a group to actually party.
>>
>>6801041
That clears up a lot, actually.
The only ounce of skepticism I have left is that they perhaps just wanted to cosplay hamsteak and lie about the complaints. It's farfetched but I follow what you're saying now.
>>
>>6800967
Having rich parents doesn't translate to your parents giving you tons'o'money.

>Mommy, Daddy, I need a couple hundred so I can play dress-up
>Fuck off kid, we didn't get this kind of money by blowing it on ching-chong marlon brando shit
>>
I'm gonna cosplay for as long as I keep loving it. I plan on getting cosmetic surgeries to keep myself looking young.
