Last weekend we conducted 4chan PMQ/Q&A #3, with 1400 people contributing 4500 posts over 22 hours. I managed to spend the better part of a day answering as many questions as possible—thread here.
Since loading large threads can be a bit of a pain on slower computers, you can also see my replies from the /q/ index (hover over the "Administrator Replies" quotelinks).

Thanks to everyone who asked questions and participated!

Otakon just annonced on their FB that Yoko Kanno as a guest

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2013-05-15/composer-yoko-kanno-to-perform-concert-at-otakon

What the heck happened to West Coast cons? Is AX even trying anymore?
>>
It's sure great that Otakon gets a talentless hack who steals music and is a sham figure head of a group of people posing as one collective composer.
>>
Is it too late to get a badge and room for Otakon? I might just go this year.
>>
>>6841004
butthurt AX fag detected.

Go an enjoy your con with a cosplay GoH.
>>
>>6841008
No I'm actually going to otakon, I just fucking hate yoko kanno
>>
whats her story?
>>
>>6841030

Yoko Kanno claims that she made all her music however it was later found out that she was "paying homage" to western producers

a list here www youtube com/results?search_query=Yoko%20Kanno%20Plagiarism

I still love her music even after finding this all out, but it kind of breaks my heart

"She" composes tons of anime OSTs. Cowboy bebop, GiTS SAC tons of others, but those are famous works. And first off it turns out that she herself isn't the one "composing" rather her and a group for 10 odd people do. But as far as composing goes most of it is either sampled without acknowledgement or permission, or straight up just blatantly stealing the backtracks to other songs from contemporary artists without any permission or mention of them

The most well known one is between the original song Battersea by Hooverphonic and the ripped off version Cyberbird from SAC. The instrumental soundtrack is basically the same. Also compositions done for people such as Maaya Sakamoto are basically just rippoffs of the beetles shit like that.
>>
>>6841057
I like her music, but as a musician myself I can say I don't respect the Yoko Kanno Project as a group of musicians. You can like music without liking the people behind it. Yuki Kajiura has replaced her long ago for my favorite composer, with Akiko Shikata a close second.
>>
>>6841062
This just tells you about all the music "she composed" it doesn't mention anything even close, other than that gabriella robin bullshit
>>
I've been playing Ragnarok Online II and she did the music for the game and I'm absolutely in love with it. I wish I could go to Otakon now.
>>
Whatever you feel for Yoko Kanno doesn't change the fact that Otakon's guest roster blows AX's out of the water,as it usually does anyway.

Saving up for Otakon as my big summer con from now on, seriously, just looking at their yearly guest lists...AX just hasn't been comparing.
>>

>>
Hack or not, AX has had her twice already, so I doubt they care.
>>
>>6841131
Yeah, and she was shit anyway.
Still laughing at >>6841110 though, I knew Bad Dog No Biscuits sounded fucking familiar.
>>
>>6841131
Right now they only got a few VAs lined up while Otakon is nailing a buch of high profile music guests.

In the end Otakon is now the premire anime con.
>>
>>6841110
>>6841115
>looks up just the Beatles songs for brevity and easy research
>Dreams in a Pie
only sounds inspired, maybe some Strawberry Fields Forever in there too but eh
>Papa Plastic
stylistic similarities, didn't stick out as much of these songs, starting to think I'm wasting my time
>Alkaloid
holy shit man I will consider these accusations with the greatest gravity
>>
>>6841154

Uh AX has like one actual seiyu. I give no fucks about dub actors.
>>
>>6841165
It actually pissed me off that they took shit from UK artists like frou frou/imogen heap and hooverphonic. Why? If you listen to cyberbird vs battersea it's fucking scary.
>>
>>6841169
Thanks for hammering my point even further. AX's main bulk for con guets are dub VAs and a cosplay GoH
>>
A few years ago I would have been full-on jelly but I'm not. Damn. Maybe I'm getting too old for this shit. I've only been going to cons for a decade too.
>>
Regardless of what you guys say, gotta knock a little harder is still one of the best things to ever come out of Cowboy Bebop (aside from the series itself)

that series is my childhood, my god
>>
>>6841110
>>6841115
Holy fucking shit. I listened through a handful of these and I'm thoroughly convinced. I would throw tomatoes at her.
>>
>>6841427
To be fair, she didn't actually know much of what was going on, she's just the face not the brains.
>>
>>6841438
Kind of makes it even worse in my opinion.
>>
>>6841448
It's pretty pathetic actually. Though, you can hear that there is a general theme in what she actually composes, but that's the worst part. When I idolized her a few years ago it was precisely because she had so much variety in her composition, so it was really disheartening to me to find out it was all basically just fake.

Wow, back in the day I thought Yoko Kanno was the shit, super talented and good at showcasing her talent.

It's really shocking to know it's several people. Why do that? Call it the Kanno Collective or something. CLAMP does this and everyone acknowledges their work as a group and as individuals.
