Someone please explain to me, how Otakon, the second biggest anime convention in the U.S., has such little support on cgl. I mean, anime expo had 3 active threads simultaneously at one point. All the Otakon threads (except the one about how dangerous Baltimore can be) have been moving at a very slow pace. Is this convention just not popular anymore?

Somehow I always thought the East Coast would be the drama free coast of the US. Now I am a little worried about dressing up in lolita, because it will only be my second time meeting other lolitas. Thankfully, I have a good friend who will hopefully keep me on the right track and not look comepletely ita for this convention.

I can't wait! I really freaking can't I have an early start seeing how I am carless so I'll be leaving my house at 10 am on Thursday. But checking into the Renaissance last year was great my room was ready by 12:30 and they had root beer floats for us. I don't care if I have to go outside the staff there is so nice. Seriously it's the only hotel I've stayed at for a convention where I have been treated decently.

It's worth it if you like dancing and/or the music. If you're expecting it to be anything more than a dark, crowded room with loud music, you will be disappointed. Personally, I love the rave, but I like dancing and the music is usually decent.

The last few times I've tried to get into the rave, the only ways in and out were by joining a conga line. Also, getting hit on by creepers, because I'm usually that lone girl off in lalaland flailing her arms by herself. Otakon is a pretty big convention and it's a good opportunity to see what one is like. If you live close, just go and enjoy yourself. It's pretty easy to make a friend or two from random strangers. There's people I've met at Otakon years ago that I still talk to.

I am only slightly ready for this con. I mean I cant wait but I have work to do on my cosplays. I am so nervous because this is gonna be my first time cosplaying yoko. I was hoping to bring a friend and dress him up like Kamina but he couldnt make it, feels pretty bad man.

I personally try and dress according to the heat. I mean I wear cosplays that are not too many layers, that and try not to go outside a lot. I mean I remember last year I wore Homura JUST because I was in the hotel connected to the con, ubt when I had to travel to a friends hotel it was brutal. that and carrying around water with you is ALWAYS good, that and a little snack so if you feel like you are loosing energy eat the snack and drink the water so you dont faint.

I can take heat pretty well. I'm wearing Lolita the whole weekend so I'm planning on wearing some chiffon (blouses and also dream sky), and having a water bottle with me at all times. I'm trying to get ahold of some clip in bangs and ponytails for at least one of the days because my natural hair has never held up in that humidity and wigs can sometimes be a little much. But I usually put my wigcap on with wet fresh out of the shower hair when it's hot to help keep my head cooler.

I'm so excited for this convention that I derped and posted in the wrong thread.
I have so much work left to do on Serenity, but the last few weeks have been busy caring for my very sick kitty, then going on vacation with my family. I also have to make scrubs for crazy!Cas, and I'm considering making a crown of thorns.

I'm so excited for otakon, though. It definitely crept up on me, but I'm super pumped to see all the different cosplays. I might swing by the meet up.
And by "swing by" I mean lurk for a few minutes a few yards away before feeling too awkward and giving up and running back to my hotel room.

I'm female and I actually really enjoy doing things by myself at cons, especially bigger ones. I'm not antisocial (I have a lot of friends), but I'm more along the lines of introverted. I think it's fun, especially at Otakon to take my time, get to the events and panels I want to go to, browse the dealers room and artist alley for eons, take pictures, and chill and people watch.

Plus you don't have to worry about those friends that don't want to do the things you want to do, and they end up bored, or you end up bored for tagging along, or rushing you along because they want to do something else.

See I realized after observing others for a while that spending like 50-80 for a weekend pass just to be anti-social, not meet ppl into the same shit you are, cause drama, etc is just straight up some of the dumbest shit one can do... stay safe and have fun in Baltimore everyone as I know my fine ass will

Thursday? Pre-reg, but don't show up until an hour or two after pre-reg opens, and then you'll be in and out in minutes as opposed to snaking around the convention center in a line.

Well, the kerfuffle over my Fef horns has a temp fix, but I wish the USPS wasn't meandering around with my payment to my friend. My fault for not having a Paypal. Gotta buy some more balls, paint, seal, and attach to Speedball's black parts.

Question: For balls like on the coif at the left, does anyone know of any good alternatives to using styrofoam? they work, but they're a bitch to spraypaint without accidentally getting eaten away into that bumpy texture, and they aren't very sturdy, and cutting them in half is extremely painful to my ears, just sets my teeth on edge. Any good alternatives for this silly design?

Not sure if this was posted but ATTN anyone that reserved a hotel for Fri-Sun: I called my hotel just to confirm my reservation and they tell me it was booked from Thurs-Sun instead of Fri-Sun. Okay guys, ive got a few questions for you if youd be so kind. I live about 4 and a half hours away from baltimore and my one friend and i have just decided last minute we want to go to otakon. Now this isnt our first time doing spur of the moment con trips, and usually what we do is drive to the con in my van with our stuff, park in a nearby decent looking parking lot, and sleep in the van instead of getting a hotel. Now ive heard some horror stories about baltimore, is sleeping in the car a good idea? (I.e. are we going to get assaulted or something at night?) and, do you know if the convention center itself has 24 hour parking? Im fine with paying for it, i just want to know if they have it.
Secondly, how much is there to do at ota if you dont have a badge? Because ive been to cons where you can do literally anything except panels without a badge, and ive been to cons where you cant even enter the convention center without one. (Mainly, can i walk around the con without a badge and not have to worry about being thrown out?)
Also, any other advice for an out of towner whos never been to an east coast con before?

Does anyone know if the roof garden is open during the con?

Trying to cram a Minish Cap Link cosplay together in time. I can't seem to find a decent toon link wig though. Do you guys have any suggestions?

All the parking in the area is in underground garages, none of them allow idling so you won't be able to use your AC and you will need that. I tried this last year and the heat was unbareable. There's one above ground structure a few blocks up and over that's cheaper and didn't care that I was Idling. Bit of a walk but not yet in the really shitty part of Baltimore. The inner harbor is the only non shitty part of Baltimore so don't park outside of that. You will need a badge to get into the convention center at all.

Is Yaya or JNig coming to Otakon? I've never actually seen JNig in person before and I'm curious.

I am not certain about 24 hour parking, but I don't think it is available. You probably don't wabt to sleep in a van in baltimore to be honest. As for a badge, you need it to enter the con and go to the panels/dealers room/art gallery iirc.

31 here. Last Otakon for me was in 2009 and I'm really excited to go again. But yeah, I do feel like an old granny looking through tumblr. I sort of feel slightly out of the loop since I haven't made any new costumes in a long time. I'm wearing Lolita the whole weekend, but I'm a little bummed there's not as much Lolita programming and events going on this year (you know, now that I have a chance to go, and I've gotten into the fashion). I'm sure I'll still have fun though, waving my parasol as I creep along in my walker. Damn kids, outta my way!

With this con it is one I would highly suggest getting a badge for. You cannot get into the convention without a badge, they have con security at every entrance checking for badges. You cant even enjoy the con if you dont have on in my opinion.
And the sleeping in the van, I wouldnt advise it because of the heat. you will just be left feeling sticky and gross all weekend, and you may not smell too nice. I would see if any of your friends or someone you know is going to the con, and see if they have two spots in the hotel room. the badge will run you about 80 at the door. I hope everything can work out!

Scored a hotel near 6 miles form the harbor for only 80 a night! Beats an almost hour drive from Fall Church, VA everyday.

2nd-timer here. I'm trying to pull together a genderbent Daisy Fitzroy cosplay. I shouldn't have waited this long, but it's such an easy outfit to do halfway decently (and I already own half of it: boots, shirt, etc.) that I'd be kicking myself if I didn't at least try. The only problem, I didn't realize how fucking expensive those ammo pouches are, for how small a part of the costume they are (and how little use I'll have for them afterwards). Is it, erm, unethical to buy things off Ebay and then return them after that one use?

I know someone who's going as a Colossal Titan lolita.

I sure hope it looks good for her sake...
