For the first time in over 5 years, we're running two Contests—one for new Rotating Banners, and the other for our House Ads.

Thanks in advance to everyone who submits banners!

EDIT: The Rotating Banners contest is now over, but we still need more House Ads!

Advice, stories, horrors etc
We have a subculture that is largely criticised so when you get a chance to represent your community be it lolita, cosplay or whatever how does one make sure they are not misquoted, seen as an attention whore or just making the community look bad.

Pic not really related but if you think of Gollum talking to a reporter you'll see why I chose it.

>how does one make sure they are not misquoted
Refuse an interview with stations that are known to do 'shock and lols' pieces and are not known for their professionalism?...
>>
What >>6933703 said. Also, don't refer to cons as "anime cons." Refer to them as Asian animation and culture events.
>>
Be careful with the 'cosplay in jokes' e.g. if you joke about cosplay requiring 'lots of safety pins' it'll come across as you (and therefore cosplayers in general) genuinely being crap at costume making rather than making a light hearted joke about emergency repairs.

Always remember that when talking to media you're representing the hobby as a whole to the average viewer/reader. If you don't want to accept that responsibility, decline to talk to media, because the rest of us are sick of people making us look bad.

I like the way you think Anon. Can't help but think this thread is recently inspired by the latest Lil-Ole dramu.

>Basically if you are getting interviewed for written media, insist on being allowed to proof read the article before publication. This way you can easily avoid errors and misquotes.
>Be aware what you say will affect not only those in your community but how outsiders will view your community. Also how the community views you.
>Don't use the press as an excuse to whine about problems in you community - talk to community members if you have issues and work it out from the inside. Basically don't use the media to troll you community or don't hang your dirty laundry in public.
>If you aren't the type who is good at talking or expressing yourself, then take the reporter to someone that is, ie: "You should chat to <insert name here> I find them to be a respected member of <insert community here>

Media is a great tool to assist your community but it can be incredibley damaging too.

And as another thought: don't say or do anything you would be embarrassed/unhappy about your classmates/coworkers/family/local comm hearing/seeing.

Great response, i'll remember these tips

Don't try to act in character. This might only work if you're something the public knows like Darth Vader or Mario, but only for a quick gag. Otherwise you will just look like a reject from Revenge of the Nerds.

In general keep in mind that they are probably doing the story to mock you, no matter how discreetly. Don't use your real name unless you don't mind it coming back to haunt you later.
>>
All great advice here.
I've never been interviewed by the press, but for all the "normal" people who end up in the convention area, I feel many of these tips are just as useful when interacting with them.

Be respectful and professional. Whenever I talk about cosplay I try to lean it more to the side of fashion design. However, that obviously doesn't show in every costume. (Because it's not true for every costume.)

I feel like all the big news reporters always seem to find the most terrible cosplayers or convention-goers to interview.

Not that any of them browse this board, and even if they did, they wouldn't listen, but seriously.. Fuck in-jokes when talking to other people.

No one is going to get 'shipping' or AUs or headcanons or fan-made characters or 'crack' or any of the shit you think is important.

Don't talk about any of it.
