Have you ever used real fur on a costume? Do you worry about being harassed or assaulted by hardcore PETA jerks?
>>
not fur, but I use leather all the time. So far no one has said anything
>>
Not for cosplay.

I do, however, own A LOT of fur.
All fur hats, fur stoles, a coat that comes down to my knees made entirely from rabbit fur....
I even wear the mink scarves that still even look like the actual animals.

Nobody has said anything to me /yet/, and I live in Seattle of all places.
If anything, I get compliments from people relieved that someone else has fur because it gets rid of their fear of wearing fur.

So don't worry about itS

I don't think people care about leather that much since it's a by product of the beef industry rather than cow's being killed just for their skin.
>>
I really like fur

But I wouldn't use it for cosplay. Maybe rabbit fur since it's cheaper, but you still need to know how to work with it.
>>
>>6923498
Cows are also not nearly as cute as baby seals, rabbits, minks, foxes, and other small fluffy animals.
>>
>>6923498
yeah no it's not. cows are specifically bread to have better skins for leather production. just as others are bread for meat and their skin is not used for leather.
the wastage from both these industries is pretty disgusting
>>
>>6923506
But these days, besides rabbit, people don't really eat small fluffy animals either.
>>
>>6923532
People eat seal
Minks don't really have enough meat on them, and fox meat would be really stringy
>>
I can't be bothered with real fur because of the price. Where I live, fake fur for fashion and craft work just as well for no more than 1/2 the price.

I usually prefer pleather, leather-look or wet-look spandex for similar reasons, though I do have some armor bits i commissioned from a leather-worker.

Even when I use fakes, when people badger me I just tell people to mind their own business and to stop bringing down real social justice with their petty bullshit. People who resort to bothering complete strangers on the street usually care more about their own ego and feeling smugly superior than they actually do making change or really being active.
>>
only secondhand fur, where the animal wasn't just used for its fur.
>>
used legit rabbit fur on my korra cosplay no fucks it looks super legit
>>
Rabbits are a huge pest problem in many states, including mine. It's so bad they're notoriously diseased. Which is a shame, because rabbit is extremely lean and good for you, when it isn't riddled with parasites and disease.

Hell all wild game is good for you.
Coyotes have a bounty in my state due to reducing the native population of fox. We had our first wolf hunt in over 30 years here as well; it almost didn't happen because there was a technicality over whether or not dogs could be used to hunt them, which is the safest way to hunt coyote, but some people felt it might put the dogs in danger. Which is a valid point, but then without the dogs it puts the hunter in unnecessary danger.

Personally I really want to do grab some rabbits this year if only because getting them in season isn't bogged down with a shitton of paperwork and tags and such that you need with deer season. Which is part of the reason why deer hunting isn't as popular as it was 15 years ago...

And why deer related vehicle accidents are going up and up.

In b4 helping the bunny out of his sweater.

yeah, i used an entire pelt for a costume. one person sort of had a problem with it then pretended they didn't, everyone else thought it was great and wanted to touch it. In our country you can only get it's fur if it was killed for another reason, like food, so it's not like my costume was the sole reason it died.

A friend used kangaroo fur for her FF Vanille cosplay. Here even though kangaroos are our national animal no fucks are given if their fur is used because they're culled in most areas because they're a pest. Ditto possums in NZ- while they're endangered here, they're a pest there, so next time I want legit fur I'll just get some shipped in from NZ.

And I'm a vegetarian. As long as the animal was culled for biofriendly reasons, not meat, I'm happy to use the fur.
>>

>culled for biofriendly reasons
What if it was also eaten?

God I'm envious.

I like animals but I have no qualms about fur. I don't believe in applying justifications to stuff like leather or even meat--you're killing an animal for its flesh, end of story. It's irrelevant to me whether it's for leather or meat or fur, and 99% of all of the above are done cruelly and inhumanely so it's a moot point; IMO it is not any worse morally to factory farm an animal for its pelt than for its meat.

Maybe this makes me an asshole, but the person who harasses me for wearing fur (hypothetically...I don't own any, yet) is an even bigger asshole.
>>
Just saying: If you do buy fur, buy quality fur so you know where it's from.
If you buy cheap fur that doesnt even tell you that, it's very likely it's chinese fur that comes from one of these huge chinese skinning factories. I'm a long shot from being an animal activist or a religious, but if you support that, you go to hell. No doubt about that.
>>
>>6924154
that was my exact concern just now
people who refuse to buy fake fur because of some bullshit reason but then they buy fur with absolutely no indication for where its from because its cheap
>>
>>6924159
I don't like fake fur because either it feels really 'off' or it gets ratty after a few wears.
>>
>>6924178
To play devil's advocate, fake fur can come with its own "issues"--manufacturing pollution, fair human labor, not biodegradable.

Some people may argue that it's preferable to animal cruelty, but the point I'm trying to make is nothing is a perfect solution.
>>
>>6924185
I do think that buying fur from people who dont even kill the raccoons before skinning them is the least perfect solution.
I dont harass people for wearing and buying cheap fur or anything, I just usually silently wonder how they can live with themselves.
>>
>>6924190
I totally agree that it would be ideal if animals that were killed for any reason were done so in a humane manner.

I do want to mention that it's *very* hard to be absolutely certain of anything in industries like this though--even expensive brands *may* use inhumane suppliers, etc, and there are tons of loopholes for the legal rights of labeling something as coming from a certain country, and whatnot.

I think it's best to strive for your own personal morals (for example I've decided that buying vintage furs would be a more cost-efficient and morally sound option than buying new), but keep in mind it's difficult to be *absolutely certain*--for a loose example, animal testing; even with products that are labeled "Not Tested on Animals", if it's something made of chemicals, at some point in the manufacturing of it it may very well have been tested on animals by their supplier's supplier, or whatever.

Sorry for long ramble. My thoughts run away with me sometimes.
>>
>>6924201
I get what you mean, and I agree entirely. You can't ever be sure with those things.

Still though, if it's something that is certainly very inhumane and cruel and you could find out it is with a tiny bit of research, it is to be avoided.

Putting a minimal amount of research into stuff you're buying helps a lot, but does not entirely avoid issues.
World would still be a better place if everyone did that, though

German supreme court found PETA guilty of paying someone to do that. The guys in the background of the video are all saying (In Chinese) "Why is he doing that?!" "What the hell!?" They also paid people to make that video of a pig being sawed in half.

Fake fur from China is also raccoon dog fur 95% of the time. If you really hate fur, just avoid everything from China, I can guarantee it wont be labelled correctly.
