Does anyone else feel like male cosplayers are just largely ignored when compared to females?

The cosplay community has evolved to where men are able to sew, style wigs and make amazing costumes but it seems like the only way the community takes notice of them by and large is if they really go out of their way to cause a scene.

Nevermind the fact that all the famous cosplayers are all female, this extends to drama as well and critiques. If a female cosplayer wears something somewhat revealing or does slutify a costume they get called a whore. If a female cosplayer does a bad crossplay then they get blasted on message boards for being horrible. If a female cosplayer is missing a certain detail on their outfit or doesn't use a wig then you bet to hell and high water they will have that mistake shoved in their face.

Now let's look at what happens when male cosplayers do the same. If a male cosplayer slutifies an outfit to show off their muscles or goes as shirtless versions of characters, no one minds. If a male cosplayer does a bad crossplay they not only get compliments but also high fives and tons of photos. If a male cosplayer misses on a certain detail or doesn't bother wearing wigs no one cares as people marvel at the prop they make. At the very worst a male cosplayer will just be ignored.

And let's not forget photos taken at con. Look back at any photographers gallery and if you never went to the con in question you'd think that barely any men did cosplay.
>>
Women are judged harsher for looks and anything remotely sexual.
People pay more attention to them and ignore the males because OMG ASSES AND TITTIES
>>
Women still cosplay more than men and have a higher quality average however the people who openly seek out cosplay photos are male so those people just ignore guys
>>
>>6985520 (OP)
most con-goers are guys.
most guys like boobs.
women have boobs.
guys give them more attention because of said boobs.
>>
Do you really think people show up at cons to look at a bunch of manchildren in costumes?

Are you really this dense?
>>
>>6985526
Found your answer right here. Another reason is that females do cosplay as male and female characters.

These two don't look anything like boys yet they are loved by all and constantly praised for their craftsmanship.

When it comes to women and unconvincing crossplays, it really all depends on how cute you are.
>>
>>6985520 (OP)
Most men don't really hit the same levels of attractiveness on female radars as cosplay girls do on ours- you'd have to be really, really good looking to become celebrity status cosplayer.

Yup. In fact, they're so popular that nearly half of all girl-Links try to copy their designs, and someone is selling replicas of their costumes on eBay for thousands of dollars.

Hell, even Lindsay sterling copied the blue one.
>>
If you don't like it, change it. Females get more attention because of drooling guys. And often times it's negative attention where all they care about it is gawking at the girls. If the male fanbase started caring about the details of a cosplay then it would be a lot less of a problem.
>>
>>6985520 (OP)
Yeah, I think cosplay-men need more attention in the media and stuff, after all, it's a hobby for everyone!
>>
It would be nice to see more good male cosplayers get some attention, but to be honest I rarely see males trying that hard anyway. At all the cons I go to, I'd say about 80% of the people cosplaying are female, and the ones who are male don't exactly try that hard (half-assed craftsmanship, mostly store-bought, unstyled/no wig, etc). Of course it doesn't help that the majority of good con photographers are drooling neckbeards, but I think the main issue is that there aren't enough quality male cosplayers.

Is this really that surprising though? Playing dress-up is something that girls are raised to do while boys are raised to play sports and whatnot. Cosplay is a hobby that plays directly into how girls are raised so they enjoy it more, while the males take advantage of it by giving the sluttier cosplayers more attention.
>>
>>6985619
>Hell, even Lindsay sterling copied the blue one.
This really rustled my jimmies. She should've worn a green tunic.
>>
>>6985619
I fucking hate this cunt with a passion. If it were a male with similar talents, and ya know who actually fit the gender role of cosplaying Link, no one would care. But because she has tits and a vagina everyone loves her shit.

Go fucking die in a car wreck Lindsey.

Not because of some half assed cosplay.

Also do not dismiss the fact that she is a girl cosplaying a character who appeals to the masses of Nintenyearold boys. Don't you dare think for a minute this had nothing to do with her insta-fame.
>>
>>6985644
This post made me lol.

I think she's amazing at violin and that's why a lot of people like her, but I agree that her being a girl playing video game music probably raked in a bunch of fanboys too.

But the male cosplayers DO care about the details. Look at people making armor who go out of their way to make this look good and historically accurate or other prop makers that do crazy shit like having transformer cosplays that really transform.

Pic related. This gigantic entry plug would not get any attention online if no hot Eva cosplayers sat in it

That is just not true.
I seriously don't know what cons you guys are going to, but the ones I go to are about 50/50 and there are a lot of very good male cosplayers who are running around acting like twats for attention.
That's not to say that this never happens (pic related).

She's a musician who likes to dress up, calm down. The only reason she's even dressed as Link is because she's covering LoZ music.
So just calm your tits.
She's pretty talented musically and is pretty deserving of the attention she gets.

>Males do try but its in areas that the typical public doesn't care for
This is pretty true, I think. Bear in mind I'm making a HUGE generalisation here, and I'm not suggesting it's universally applicable, but in my experience it tends to be females care more about things like making a costume thsat looks good and fits well, sewing, hair styling and makeup while the males seem to care more about making awesome props and armour etc.

Even though they probably involve a similar amount of work, it's the former that looks more visually appealing at the end of the day. Cosplayers appreciate the effort that goes in to prop making but basically everyone else doesn't give a fuck.

it's like kpop fans of male groups
>>
>>6985931
>it doesn't change the fact that sewing and other home economics related activities primarily appeal to women
Hey idiot, anyone under the age of 50 knows this is bullshit. Quit living in stereotypes that were true 40+ years ago.
>>
>>6985981
Their wording was pretty poor but you can't deny that women are more likely to be interested in sewing, or at least know how to sew, than men. Is this a result of society being shit and teaching boys and girls different values? Yes, almost certainly, but you can't deny the fact that it's there.

My sewing classes at my high school were something like 80% girls, and from what I gather that's pretty common. Just like the metal and woodwork classes had far more boys than girls.

You can't fix all that shit in 40 years.
>>
>>6986008
No it couldn't possibly have to do with the fact that boys and girls' brains are wired differently.

No that's sexism...
>>
>>6985981
Are you fucking stupid? Cosplay is proof that the stereotype is true. How many men do you see eager to get a crack at the sewing machine? Majority of dudes that cosplay just bought their costumes or their gfs made it for them.

Holy shit /cgl/, does every thread have to derail into boys vs girls?

There's no fucking point to any of this, you're not gonna change guy's opinions about women and vice versa. If anything, all this constant fucking bickering is gonna continue to widen the already mawing-as-fuck gap between the genders here.

Seriously OP, do everyone a favor, delete the thread.
>>
>>6986021
A good portion of females buy their costumes or have them commissioned/made by a friend too. The ratio is the same between men and women. Please stop dwelling on your stupid feminist views, thanks.
>>
>>6985955
You were implying that women put more work into sewing and hairstyling than men do, when they've proven themselves to do just as shitty of a job as any bad male cosplayer ever.
>>
>>6986052
>stupid feminist views
the anon you responded to is arguing that women are pre disposed to sewing and home economics, sooo
>>
>>6986058
No, I said GENERALLY women TEND to CARE MORE ABOUT sewing and hairstyling etc. I used the most vague wishy-washy language possible specifically to avoid people inferring shit like that.

Obviously tonnes of shitty cosplayers of both genders exist. OBVIOUSLY. I mean dude that shouldn't even need to be said.
>>
Because fake nerd guys that are incredibly attractive and dress up in skimpy cosplays for attention only exist in handfuls at cons.
>>
>>6986110
>fake nerds
oh just stop it with that.
This thread is already full of shitty arguments, lets not add fuel to the fire.
>>
>>6986110
How do you even tell a fake nerd guy apart from a real one?
>>
>>6986052
Who gives a shit about the ratio? The mere overwhelming number of female cosplayers compared to males means that there are more women using sewing machines. who gives a shit if the actual ratio is the same?

As a male photographer myself, ill give my opinion.

Going to cons I usually take more of girls just because that is what appeals to me. Im attracted to girls and it the most pleasurable towards my eye which then leads to me thinking it will be a good picture. I only ever take pictures of guys when it's something I relate to e.g. A film or a game etc.

Dont get me wrong, I was at Comic Con andIve seen so many great male costumes and admire you guys for it.

just thought id give my 2 cents
>>
>>6985694
I'm not saying guy cosplayers are the ones lacking in quality, although there seems to be a smaller ratio of quality vs joke cosplays in my area, I'm saying it's the fanbase that pays attention soley to females.
>>
>>6985806
>Majority of the scene is guys

Uhhh most of the cosplayers are female
>>
OP is ignoring the treatment of good/attractive male cosplayers. I have a few guy friends who can go in half-assed or incomplete cosplay yet still sleep with 15 girls that weekend, and be talked about as if they're a mysterious con knight in shining armor at the next local convention. I'd say only 2/10 of the guy cosplayers I know are actually serious about good construction and accuracy and such, but they definitely don't get as much shit for a 'meh' cosplay.

Fake nerd guys only watch Big Bang theory, play call of duty, and "became nerds" because it was "in"
>>
More people are attracted to women than to men.
>>
>>6987059
That's all well and good but in the grand scheme of things they are still ignored after the cons.
>>
>>6987109
But women are 56% of the population, and homosexuality/Bisexuality rates are similar between men and women.
That's the opposite of the truth
>>
>>6987113
That's because they don't do anything after cons. Hardly any male cosplayers pursue cosplaying the way female cosplayers do. It's a much more casual thing to the male cosplayers I've met. They don't have fan pages, or try to work booths at cons, or social network the same way.
>>
A majority of us are only focusing on the popularity side. How about the fact that men carry a "get out of drama free" card. Even if they wear a bad cosplay the internet will never drop down their throats unless they do something extremely horrible at the same time
