Cosplayers, reenactors and LARPers, I all consider variations on cosplay. It's all costume-play, after all.

Cosplayers are based off anime, manga, ect, and go to conventions, and get pictures taken.
Reenactors just go for real-world accuracy, and play out things based on real-world events.
LARPers I consider a mix of the two - they make original costumes partly based off a certain theme, partly on historical armor / clothes. Then they go LARP.

I've been wondering...are there any kinds of non-roleplay events other than Halloween for people who are interested in historical fashion? I love Recency stuff, but I'm worried that any kind of thing with that would be a bunch of delusional middle-aged Jane Austen otaku.

I'm sure there's more out there, but I've never really gotten into that scene. If the LARP scene in the US wasn't so bad, I'd love to get into that.
And I'd like to avoid my local LARP group like the plague because some of the members I know.

Yes, there's more research and accuracy involved in reenactment, but you're still in costume / uniform, and you're doing it for fun / as a hobby. So I'd still classify it as "cosplay."
By extension you could call theater another form of cosplay, I suppose. Though it's usually much more about the performance than the costumes.

Why do we have to reclassify things that are already appropriately titled?

cosplay =/= LARP =/= reenactment

Cosplay is people dressing up as existing fictional characters.
LARP is people dressing up in OCs for an RL fantasy pretend game.
Reenactment is people dressing in period-accurate costumes to recreate historical events.

They are tied to one another in that they require costumes.

Also, non-horrible shitheel reenactment groups will allow women to dress as male soldiers or whatever- it's not like it didn't happen IRL. Also, most cavalry members in reenactment are women, because, well, the women own the horses.

They're pretty much cosplayers- They'll give you shit for machine-sewing or wearing glasses that aren't period, whatever. They're nitpicky people.

Well if you're not into games (larp, acting) then just wear it. When I was in high school I came to school all the time in pirate and related historical fashions. It's just clothes and if you like it just wear it. Of course now I'm more into dandy. Still requires mustache so that hasn't changed lol but of course at that point it's no longer a costume.. you'll just be the weird dude/gal with the funny clothes

IMO: It's both. It's similar in the aspect we dress up and do it as accurately as possible (Only instead of relating the costume to character it's uniforms, gear, etc to the soldier. It's only alike in that aspect I think because as a reenactor you can choose to adopt a persona; a character for yourself. Like say if I did Civil War and did the US I could make a profile or persona for myself, name, where I was born, what's my story, why I joined the USA instead of the CSA. Just as an example. (I will never do Civil War. Shit's volatile yo.)

If anybody wants to try this idea for a renaissance fair:

get a stand, dress up like alchemist and get paraphernalia (bonus points for glasswork that looks handmade)

recreate the experiment of antoine lavoisier to prove water is not an element.

blow hot steam through a chamber with red hot iron nails. The nails rust and hydrogen gas goes through and is fulled with a tube into a water bath with a test tube. When you then put a flame to the captured gas it makes a pop sound proving its hydrogen and that water is not an element (element = is not made up of smaller parts)

you can also have a workshop where people make thin out and seal both ends of a glass tube to create a fake decorational pipette.

PS these experiments might be mega-dangerous. Do research pls.

I already attended the coratian Terra Nova earlier this month.
Then this weekend I will be at an airsoft realsim which is kind of invitation only.
Then the next weekend there will be a one day "larp" which is kind of between a larp and a boffertag and the organizer is an idiot, sharing this feat with most of the players.

That's the close future, there will be a one night lurking fighting game somewhen at srping,
then there will be the Demgardi Krónikák at July 5-7
Aug 22-25 another larp called Lumina
Sept 20-22 the autumn Demgardi Krónikák, international version where foreigners can come too
Oct 18-20 Project Prijot, fallout larp

and if everything goes right I will be at drachenfest too.

These are the bigger/more important games, probably there will be a handful of smaller games or ones that are not announced yet

Demgardi Krónikák sounds good, I'll look that up. Also, Project Prijot sounds pretty rad. I'm really into fallout themes but find it difficult to imagine myself doing a larp on it.
